I like Akira. My girl likes it too, which is saying something.
I like Studio Ghibli, although a lot of people start bitching and whining about how it's not anime when i say that. Howl's moving castle is a cool movie, kids film or not.
Also, for fans of Ursula LeGuin, they've done a version of the Earthsea Trilogy (they, like everyone else, has left the series-murdering book 4 out) but they can't release it in English because someone else has the rights-Sky i think-after they made a Televised version of the books. Which wasn't very good to be honest.

Studio Ghibli is absolutely fantastic. I've seen all the movies by Hayao Miyazaki at least five times each. I've probably seen spirited away at least 30 times.
Akira to me was okay... for some reason it just wasnt as good as I thought it was going to be. Probably because I was expecting too much since EVERYONE seems to enjoy that film alot. It wasnt bad though.
Usala LeGuin huh? I'll have to look into that! I dont think I have ever heard of it before.
I used to watch some animes when I was younger. I can only remember pieces of the shows though... I wish I new what they were. It was on the scifi channel in the US at the time and they were pretty violent and gory... Grrr.. lol I wish I could travel back in time in my brain so I can remember them!
-SF
yeah...my sig is from Ikkitousen,...thats the anime name...the mangas name is battle vixens
cant believe that completely slipped my mind

Ursula LeGuin is a fantasy author, mostly famous for her novels 'the earthsea quartet.' Book 4 totally kills the whole series though.

I don't watch much anime but I have seen a few Cowboy Bebop eps as well as most of the Samurai Champloo episodes. I like SC a lot because of the overall style of it. The style of animation, soundtrack, its constant shift between quirky comedy and serious drama that can be extremely dark and moving at times. If anyone has seen this, can you recommend any similar series for me? I appreciate what anime has to offer but most of I what I see is extremely frilly and forced, something I can't really get into.

Yeah, I've never really been much of an anime fan either. The only ones I ever really watched and thought were cool were Neon Genesis: Evangelion and the Gundam series(s). I just like robots.
I once rented The End of Evangelion and that was seriously the most ****** up thing I've ever seen... I had no idea what was going on, and everything just seemed too "all over the place".
the end of evangelion is like that....hehe...
how could i forget hellsing ><

RahXephon is a GREAT robot show! Fantastic series....
I also love Last Exile. It's pretty darn good if you like aviation and stuff like that...

Samurai Champloo is awsome. I have to recommend Full Metal Alchemist, it is also both quirky and dramatic with a seriously dark under-tone. I started watching a new series a while back that was looking pretty cool, but now I can't remember what it was called.

i watched the full collecters dvd set before they put it on and then they started showin it...made me want to cry...
so ive stayed away from watchin naruto, samurai champloo.. and others...
another good one is anegai teacher btw..taht one just popped in my head
Gunnm manga
Vampire Hunter D (the original)
Armitage 3
That's it. I'm rather choosy about my anime and manga. Not a huge fan. 99% of the time I agree with simon.

I only watched the 2nd gig of GITS and i enjoyed it even though it wasn't the best. I'll have to find the first season sometime... Ive been watching Bleach since back around episode 50 and it is by far my favorite series. Also these is this one i really like called Ergo-Proxy but its soo hard to find subbed episodes... the show is amazing though.
The person who wrote Howl's Moving Castle is probably my favorite fantasy Author of all time (cant remember her name right now) and the book is way more fascinating than the movie (which i enjoyed both subbed and dubbed).

Hmmm, I've heard this name float around with "Howl's Moving Castle"...

Anyone heard of Little Ninja? It is some short anime flick that ran online, I saw a couple episodes but forgot all about it. I wonder what became of it? My pathology professor turned me on to it, go figure, he likes to see blood.

Oh man, I forgot the name of the anime, but this one anime (the WHOLE series) is like EoE (End of Eva) on every drug imagineable x100, i watched it once and i'm still recovering from the mental scars.

Oh god, I just remembered one. It's a manga book series.
It's like X/1999 or something... Damn those books creeped me out...
Grave of the fireflies was good, but I don't lump that in with anime normally.
As for comics, Sandman by Neil Gaiman has been the best series I've ever read. Ever.
end of eva is part of neon genesis i believe is what youre talkin about omega....
flcl...i need to rewatch that....ive seen bits and pieces of it...but never all the way through..
ill have to break out a full list of my anime on you guys later 8)

I know that End of Eva is part of Neon Genesis Evangelion, it's the second (or third) movie, after Death & Rebirth.
NGE is one of those series that makes sense to start with then digresses into more abstract, and ultimately, perplexing scenes that make you question your intelligence, when, after all, there's actually a philosophical meaning to all of it.

ive seen parts of the jap naruto..i liked it a bit....the reason ive kept from watching the stuff on CN is because they edit it all up
they take a really good series...and edit the crap out of it....kind of upsets me... it just kinda ruins it for me when one of my favorite series is chopped up for "adultswim"....they call it adult swim.....but they make it kid friendly

I just finished Inuyasha a few weeks ago. Was that really the end of the whole series!?!? If so, I am really disappointed.
Anyways, I love Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X).

I know that some of these have been mentionned before but they are my recommendations anyways...
Full Metal Panic: the original, Fumoffu, and The Second Raid (a 100% military teenager gets thrown into common society, all he had known before included guns, tactics, following orders, and doing anything necessary to acheive a certain goal) <--- I can't beleive no one mentionned these ones before, My top recommendation
Appleseed (Anime movie, setting is in a world similar to Full Metal Panic but the story is more of a police investigation)
Love Hina and the three part movie made of it called Love Hina Again (a guy trying to get into university and becomes manager of an all girl dorm) <--- this is the series which got me started in anime and mangas
Chobits (A guy and his AI dream girl) <--- #2 recommendation
A.I. Love You (not sure if they made this one into anime but if not I recommend the manga, kind of along the same lines as chobits)
My sister (whom I got into these anime/manga things and has since shown me a few good ones) also recommends Negima though I have not come to have the chance to watch or read that one.
Note: I also love all that I have seen from studio ghibli but this pretty much limits itself to Spirited Away and Howl's moving castle.
Anyways Good thread, I'll have to take a look at some of these when I get a chance...

Outlaw Star is a fantastic show. Not too many people have heard of it I guess though... it was on Adult Swim a long time ago but they canceled it for some reason...
Uhh, what is with your CN gripe? Why were you disgusted when CN aired trigun? Isn't that a step up for CN? Why have you stayed away from watching those mentioned series?
Yeah, I agree with b4i7. They really need to stop editing things. It's kind of annoying...
Like naruto for example! I've seen the japan version and American version and I have to say... the japan version is way better just simply because it doesn't make you feel like your 5 years old when you watch it. I was embarrassed to watch the American version until I saw the Japanese one. American version: PG. Japanese version: PG-13. Might not seem like much a difference... but it is.
Now Elfen Lied... That is a pretty good show I thought. But its rating would be something more like M. It's not pronography but it does have some nduity and it has A LOT LOT LOT of violence and blood! lol I guess that just floats my boat though... ^^

Humm... just goes to prove my point! Full Metal Panic: The second Raid... No porn, some nudity and a lot of violence... Ok I would not say there is 'A LOT LOT LOT' of violence but it has it's fair share... I don't think that the others have nudity in them... well they do include the some parts hidden type of nudity in a couple of episodes but other than that...
Fumoffu has the least violence and the most humour...
the original series is the least interesting of the three but it is the one that started it all and is still pretty interesting. It also explains a bunch of stuff about the others.
Most of the violence/gore is toned down due to the fact that they fight in big robotic machine type suits... (who said they liked big robots?) Once again, you just can't go wrong with this set of anime!
For those who prefer dubbed anime instead of reading the subs, the original series is dubbed but the other two are only subbed at the moment.

Adult Swim didn't cancel Outlaw Star. They showed the whole series. But I think they skipped one episode because there was way too much stuff in it. Anyways, I just didn't like Gene's new haircut at the end of the series.

UPDATE:
Okay, its freakin officialy... chobits is my new favorite show of the month. I give it...
TWO THUMBS UP!
:up::up:
yeah,,...ive got the first 3 manga...need to finish buyin it..
i remember outlaw star...just been toooooo long :D..seen way too many different series since then...
most of my anime is along the line of how chobits is..... the slightly perverted...but very comical anime...
then we have the violent/action stuff
then the stuff that just kinda messes with your mind...
Timoi
11-08-2006, 08:32 PM
The only thing I didn't like about chobits is that the series is too short. something like this should have kept going much longer and strech it out a bit (add more of the gradually disappearing perverted humour nearer the end) and the ending is a little deceptive... Other than that it's 100%
If you want to know more you'll just have to watch it or read it...
It is the series with which I got my sis interested in anime and she now owns the whole series in manga. Since then, she has bought the whole series of AI Love You in manga and she has started on Negima... Which apparantly is very good too. Her friend bought the whole series of Love Hina (manga) after both her and my sister got interested in my anime of it. If I remember right, Love Hina, AI Love You, and Negima are all by the same author.

9.5/10
They should of showed more of what happened after the end of the series. But it was still better than nothing... There is also talk about a movie coming out. That will be cool.
I also just started Full Metal Panic. That is a pretty funny show... The main character is so clueless and war orientated its almost sad... but in a hilarious way. Such as making "cute" earrings for a girl that likes him but he doesn't know it yet... but the funny thing was... she was all blushing until he told her that they were flash grenades! HA! lol
So far... I'll give it a 7.8/10. We'll see how the rest of it goes though.

Now and Then, Here and There
The style reminds me of akira. Pretty good so far! You can check it out on YouTube. They have parts of each episode. This is how I do it... open part 1 of episode "X" and once that is done loading all the way open the other 2 out of three parts for episode "X" and by the time you are done watching part 1 of episode "X" the other two parts are done! WOOT! lol I got this Sh*t down to a science! :p

I don't know but nobody had mentioned the old school stuff. Personally I loved Ranma 1/2, which is hillarious, saint seiya. But now i just watch the mature anime i guess. Like Neon genesis, which i have the entire collection woot!!! seriously the ending was ****ed up, but I like the gorinesss of it. Scenes of a spychologially depresed kid "shingi" masturbating on the body of a psychologically unconsious girl "asuka", angels eating evas, misato being blown into peases, and everyones melts down at the end!! woot exitement!!!. ohh and the other one is biblebl*cough** sorry as I was saying Samurai X.
