View Full Version : Another New Forum Feature

This one's another trial. Not 100% sure where we're going with this one, we want to see how you guys take to the idea.
After you get a reputation above 20, you become a regular here at TBCS. The main advantages of this is that you get to upload your sig images, and there's an increase in the size of image you can upload to your profile. You can also keep up to 60 PM's.
There may be other features, but me and Crimson Sky are still working on this one.
Some of you may have noticed that i re-arranged the forums today. I've been taking suggestions from you guys for over a month now, and i hope these changes are exactly what you had in mind!
The completed worklogs forum is there to allow us to 'weed out' all those worklogs that would have been happier in the ideas zone-ones that start with good intentions and get no-where. When your worklog is completed, send one of the active mods (Crimson Sky, DaveW, or Rankenphile) a PM and we'll move your mod into this catagory.
I've emptied my inbox and i'll be here all night moving some finished worklogs. Note that you don't have to finish the mod: if it all goes tits-up for one reason, you might still have some damn good stuff that people could use. When you're finished, let us know!
Finally, the finished worklogs section allows users to rate your worklogs, so you can improve on your writing style, photography, and other elements.
There's a whole heap of changes, but i'll let you explore them for yourself. Enjoy!
Oh, and one more thing. the system checks your usergroup on an hourly basis: if you have a reputation over 20, you might need to wait a while before you get the promotion.
Thanks guys, would love some feedback on this new system!

Oh wicked thanks lol!
I love the idea of more room for more private message storage!
Is there a set amount that you can tell us of how much this will go up and with the size of the signatures?
Thanks alot:up:

Perhaps you weren't one of the first 10?
Coolness -- I had 22 rep before the feature was put in =D
My sig's hosted on the website right now -- that's pretty nifty. No-nonesense

That, Tybrennis, is because you're a Super Secret Agent.
I'll turn on sig uploading for you guys as well. Thanks for pointing that out-the promotion only applies to Regular users. I don't think 20 rep points is hard to acheive, i mean i'm free with the points and they're worth 5 each. All you got to do is make 4 useful posts and wham, you're a regular.

Looks to me like you've got a damn good reputation of 25 (which will probably go up when people see those fan grills you dew for Snowfire) so you should be added to the regulars list.
I've also just handed out a sh*t-heap of reps to helpful members. You guys really are great bunch, keep up the good work! If you're rep is above 20, then you should become a regular in (at most) an hour's time.
Just fyi...it doesn't work in reverse. Once you're a regular, you can't go back to being a normal user...so if you upset someone and they bad rep you, you won't lose your 'regular' privileges. That doesn't mean you're immune to bans, infractions, warnings, etc. etc. So be good. ;)

I believe those were for omega... But it was my thread. ^^
Gotta hand it to that boy though... he can draw some pretty nice fan grills!
haha, I like that. You cant go back to being a normal user. I dont think I could ever get enough bad reputation points... but its nice to know that anyway.

Okay...i checked my code, turns out my calculations for the icons above 160 were horribly wrong...i'd based my original calculations from getting your first icon at 40, so 200 would be the base for icon 6...but that's wrong. I corrected the code, uploaded the file, and crashed the forums.
Whoops.
backups, dave. backups :P
So i uploaded the BACKUP (come on man, i'm better than that) file that i had so that the base functionality was restored.
When i can find the syntax error that's causing the boards to crash, i'll fix it for good. But i need to work on some code for uni at the moment, but hey, i doubt anyone's going to rack up 120+ rep points over the weekend :D

You think that next to the rep within our UserCP we can see who left it?
DaveW
12-26-2006, 06:36 PM
I could turn the option on, but then people would be able to see who left them bad rep, and we've had enough trouble with that as it is.
I figure if people leave you rep, and they want you to know who it's from, they can sign the comment box, like i do sometimes.
If you get bad rep, and you think it's unjust, then report it and i will reverse it if i agree.
If you'd rather know, i can start a poll to see what the boards in general think, and if the vote comes out for named votes then i'll turn it on. You want me to set up a poll?

Up to you. I know how negative people can be (I've seen it first hand at PCApex) about reps.

I can understand wanting to know who gave the rep, but in my opinion it's best left confidential or like you said people are free to sign it if they like. If all rep points can be seen it may create a kind of obligatory exchange atmosphere whereas here it's optional.

I've seen other post where people have said, "Have have 22 rep points" and such things, but the highest I've seen is 5 and that's the top moderators from what I can tell. Is there a place where you can see how much rep you have?

At the top of the forums, you will see a link to User CP. That will tell you how many rep points you have, and for what threads you received them. I have 1 adverse rep point, but I think it should be a positive. It's not bugging me enough to care at this time.

Yep, and if you know who gave you bad rep, youre going to be pissed off on them for the rest of your life, so better live it like it is.

sgtm, i check your rep history, you have nothing but positives. You have one 0 rep, which means someone who has less than 10 posts or a rep under 1 has tried to give you a rep. That one will turn into a rep point if the user ever makes more than 10 posts and is still popular enough. This is to protect our members from bad posters and to stop people making second accounts to give themselves reps. (I know, it's pathetic, but you never know.)
You have a clean slate dude :)

Yeah, I definately agree with anybody that said not enough people hand out rep. I know I've written some +rep worthy posts, but when I check myt User CP, almost all of them are for something small that I wrote (with the exception of what I said to Razor's Edge in the wallpaper thread...).

I do like the Rep system, however. Along with postcounts and the person's general attitude or whatnot, it can really help to show how a member is, and how much of an impact they have on the community.
That being said; only 3 more points until 40! Huzzah!

SW, to you it should have another feature, like, kind of rep point?
Let say:
help rep
friendly rep
skills rep
Not a bad idea, but it also can be a real jigsaw for the user and the mods.
but I like this idea +1 rep ;)
I have 16 rep points, almost at 20!
A more advanced system would be cool. I would say the system is a sucess. It started out as a trail and I would say that now, several months later, it is a very nice little system, and depending on the amount of coding involved, it would be cool to have different types of reps.
DaveW
01-02-2007, 09:01 AM
Unfortunately, VBulletin didn't think the rep system would be very popular, as they have a 'rank system' allready-so they never put it together very well. Half the stuff i had to hack to get it working, and the other half i configured through the admin panels.
A more advanced system would be hellish to set up and keep working for more than 5 minutes. I think if the current rep system worked better, say, showing more information about reps, eg: numerical values as well as green scales, then it would be much better.
Maybe in future VBulletin upgrades this will improve. Thanks for the input guys, +rep to all of you.

Heh, I can understand if forums are being gay, I helped my dad get PHPBB up and running... took an eternity.
Anywho, I like the rep system. It's cool. The idea of different kinds of rep is cool too, but what we have now is just fine.
Moot-Side-Note: Yay! 43 rep! Not a single red one, either! And I have my double bars! :D
