I'm thinking of a really famous piano piece that is played with two hands doing different pieces... if that makes sense.... anyone know what it is?

Well done you have the dumbest answer lol I'm only joking
I must say I have played the piano for 12 years now and I can't think of what it is and my first answer was Chopsticks lol.

Some people claim that Mozart's Moonlit Sonata 3rd movement is the hardest, but I doubt this is a widely held opinion.

Hmm . . . there's Rachmaninov's Prelude in G minor. I believe that is the one that requires 12 fingers, or very large nimble ones that can play two non adjacent keys at the same time.
Of course threre is also Impromptu for 12 Fingers by Michael Nyman. Anything that requires 12 fingers is going to be in the top 10 list of hard I think . . .unless it is only like 40bpm and I have a long rest to prepare for that 12 fingered chord.

i'd have a hard time classifying a piece for 12 fingers as valid in this discussion :P
i'm not personally aware of many 12-fingered pianists. if i wanted to, i could write a piece* for 10 fingers and 5 toes. that represents a larger portion of the population in general.
maybe i'll do that this weekend, i anticipate being bored.

*yes, the piece would be crap. i'm not a composer and i'm horribly out of practice on the performance side too.

None of these are hitting me like the one I am thinking about... But I'll see if I can find somewhere to listen to some of them.
12 fingers.... reminds me of the guy in gattaca playing the piano. Was that the same piece you guys are talking about?
