HOLY COW....

These things are pricey!

WHY???

They are pricey because of the amount of components mixed in with a smidgen of hype. :) They have a dedicated processor to reduce the amount of overhead that is usually handled by the rest of your system.
The idea behind it was good on paper, unfortunately it just doesn't really work out like that in real life. All the reviews I have read said that when they were all said and done it didn't make enough of a difference to justify the price of the card.

It also looks like they have USB for high-er speed LAN. Good concept, but accelerate it more: Use Firewire, or IEEE1394. Much faster.

This was something used in modems. Winmodems required processor usage while standard modems had their own processing chip. It's the same idea. Honestly, nics use such little of your systems overhead it's kind of worthless. The price doesn't facilitate the benefits.
If you're a nerd that spends an hour and a half explaining every little part of your computer at lan parties, then get it for boasting rights.
I doubt that a good 3com nic couldn't deal with that thing.

On a lighter note, look up etherkiller. Fun way to destroy old network equipment. Not for idiots.

I know every spec about my computer and i will happily divulge it, but i'm not about to go spend 250$ on something that will increase my performance by a teensy tiny bit and looks cool, just so i can say i have it.

Wait so what is the point of it? It just looks like a network card that can think for itself.

It's both, however the added "Thinking for itself" is pretty useless because the actual network utilization isn't bottlenecked at the computer, it's elsewhere, like at the router or your ISP.

Yeah exactly it is pointless. One thing I heard about to increase bandwith to your computer is having two network cards one sends packets and one recieves can be done with linux apprently. It takes up two jacks on a router though. Don't know if this would actually work though.

It works, and alot better than this "Killer" NIC card. All you have to do is set it up right, which takes quite a bit of networking experience.

If you really wanted the quintesessence of overkill, use two of those killer cards, one for down and the other for up.

That... would cost so much! lol

Man they are mental! I suppose they do what they say on the box - 'AGP Killer'

LOL

yeah i think the premise is to connect data ports to 120volt power. most computer electronics can't quite handle that across data :p

We should try that in the UK - we have 240v of power lol I think that would really f**k up a cd drive...

It's still a fun way to fry 10-20 year old technology you pick up. I've killed some old 4mb token ring hubs with one at my tech school. Our teacher showed etherkiller and taught us how to make it. How I miss Cisco routers class.

Yes this works great! You will see a big difference, I've done this to my server and its just all around faster when sending and receiving files.
