I got tired of using the iPod firmware, and iPod Linux was a bit choppy, so i decided to get rockbox. This firmware puts out the best sound ive ever heard from an mp3, even at low bitrates. It also has a movie player (for minis, photos, and even nanos) that plays .rvf format. Interchangeable schemes, 3 equalizers, backlight settings, and even more. I love it so far.

I have a first gen Mini--what would be my advantages, and will it bork the original firmware?

Are you able to play videos on an iPod Nano with rockbox?

This may be a little ambitious, but a friend and I were just talking about taking a spare laptop drive and making our own mp3/video player. Does anyone think that this software would work in that application?

Then there's the display. Of course we'll need a color screen and an encoder of some type. Thoughts anyone?

What is Rockbox? Why should I use it? (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WhyRockbox)

AND IT WORKS ON THE X5 W00000T! That right thur is my final reason for getting the iAudio X5 and saying goodbye to the iPod for good.

Yeah, this would be great software for a project, and it comes with dual boot (in a nice menu, I might add) system for the original firmware and Rockbox. The equalizers come in handy when you need that extra "kick" from a certain wavelength (I have the Philips surround sound earbuds, and the boost came in handy for the higher trebles and the lower bass sounds). I happen to have a Zen Vision: M, and it has Soundblaster X-fi built in. I think Rockbox sounds twice as good. Seriously, try it.

PS- For the Mini, you'll get some great features including better sound, theme application, etc. For the mini though, I would recommend iPod Linux (www.ipodlinux.org).
