Wow, after visiting this site for over a year, I finally have a practical mod idea!

Since my 3 year old and her 19 month old sister keep attempting to monopolize my second computer, I wanted to give them a computer of their own that doesn't take up a whole lot of space. So, I came up with this idea, however it will probably be a while before I can get to it.

Here goes...

If you are familiar with childrens furniture, you have probably seen the tables that they make for them similar to this (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2304182&cp=2257861.2257864.2257878&pg=4&parentPage=family).
Underneath the table, there is unused space where the skirting is that I think would be big enough to house all necessary PC components (mobo, DVD drive, hard drive, and PSU). The components would be mounted on a piece of plywood that would be mounted underneath like a drawer. Holes would be cut in the front skirting for the DVD drive, and USB ports. The power and reset buttons would be put someplace where they wouldn't accidentally be hit.

Anyway, this idea is still in the development process, and like I said, will be a while before it is actually built.

it's a neat idea, and about the only concern i have at the moment is cooling

obviously you need it, but you're going to need to be really careful how it's done, 'cuz you don't want to deal with scorched children :p

I've considered that. I thought that perhaps I could mount the intake fans along the side skirting and the exhaust in the traditional rear. The hardware for this project would definitely not be high-end. I will be salvaging an older 700Mhz PC. It really only needs to be able to get on the internet to playhouse disney and PBS and play childrens educational games.

Just make sure to COMPLETLY cover every single part of the electrical components. Also, be sure to use small mesh screen on all the fans. You need to make this case mod prepared for spills, turnovers, topples--extreme abuse. :)

no kidding. children: the ultimate component abuse test

Oh yeah, safety is a must. Especially after taking one to the ER last night (non-computer related of course).

That was funny dave. Your a real comedian you are.

Good luck with this project javafiend. Sounds like a great idea to me. I keep picturing a yellow table top with blue legs and a built in lcd screen. heck, I wouldn't mind having it! You should get a keyboard cover as well... I think you can guess why. Hmmm, also, you can get them one of those cool mice that look like cars from xoxide... 8)

play, laugh, grow ...and become a advanced computer technical engineer. Hmm, good slogan lol

They give refunds? Damn, missed my opportunity

Seriously, though, I will be going with wired keyboard and mouse, nothing fancy.
