I don't think I'll be able to pull it off, but I got a prototype of what I want. I mocked it up today at work because there was nothing to do.
1. Start with a box.

2. Cut and trim.
3. Lay components in.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1246.jpg
4. Mount motherboard.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/gigaglytch/DSCN1248.jpg
I'm gonna have to build some kind of cage of framework to hold the power supply.

Now keep in mind, I don't have access to sheet metal or plexiglass, and this is the best I could come up with on-hand that basically displays what I want. I like the idea of hinging the area in the back, so you can flip the case up to get to your hd, cd drive and floppy drive. And the area behind of the motherboard will be cut out just a little bit to get the IDE, mini-molex and Molex connectors down to the drives.
Feedbck appreciated.

Stick with the MSI box and bring it to next year's NIVIDIA's GeForce LAN. One guy had pc parts on boxes at the LAN. Jen Hsun Huang saw it and awarded him the "worst case" award. That guy won a new PC.

first things first i will state cardboard boxes aint exactly gunna have good airflow :P
but the idea here is sound
u should try and do a mock up in 3d with zmod or something give us all a better idea :D

Well, he did say that he was at work. So card board boxes was probably the best he could do at the moment.

Take the PS apart so its not so heavy?

Exactly. It's an "idea," dammit. Not the real thing.
I don't know anything about CAD/D, so I can't do anything 3D. Until I can eventually do something out of metal, this is what the basic layout of the case will be. Besides, cases have to start as "concepts."

You could try Google Sketch Up. It is free and pretty easy to learn how to use.

Hey, thanks for telling me about this program.

Here is a site where people have uploaded pc components. You can use it to further help in designing your case and layout. I am pretty sure that all of them are the correct scale.

Don't do this unless you know what you're doing, ok? Every second guy on the boards has a horror story related to dismantling PSU's.
They're not to be taken lightly.

My one friend, Tim, took his apart and was screwing around with the capacitors.....from a 500W PS lol

I need some help though. How would you color the bars to the frame without having the whole side of the case turn that color?

Well ya, i figured not touching the exposed PS components while turned on was pretty self explanitory, but i guess it happens :)

they're not just a problem while powered on. capacitors can screw you up good when the thing's unplugged.

Exactly. A capacitor is like a battery, but holds a constant level of voltage.

I think the ones inside of those 65 pound monster monitors can kill you right?
You mean taken apart lightly.. :dead: :p
HA! That was pretty good...

Under the best conditions, it could stop your heart. So yes, they could kill, but that possibility only exists in the best scenario.

What, as in the thing from Back to the Future?

Mitternacht, your sig is too large. It clutters up the forums. Please reduce it's size. 4 lines is what we specify in the rules, although we're pretty relaxed about it normally.

Another question:
Does anyone know where I can get sheet metal reeeal cheap? I don't care if I have to buy it online. I don't know anywhere around where I live that sells that stuff; that and plexiglass. But steel is more important right now.

the cheapest you'll find is scrap from metalworkers, probably. use your yellow pages or something, might be useful.
