View Full Version : Project: Vaio stage 1
hello all,
this is gong to be stage one of two of a Sony Vaio mod
the subject: my dads vaio desktop PC
stage 1 will consist of a watercooling setup
stage 2 will consist of a sidepanel window, lighting, etc
i will post pics of the water cooling setup on tuesday evening (now it is saturday)
this project has started with a bit of a rocky start...
i ordered all my WC parts through frozencpu.com all but my koolance EXOS which i got from CompUSA for 40USD
i ordered a maze4 gpu block, when my father recieved it last night ..he came to find it does not include ANY mounting hardware, though on the outside of the box it says it has everything
so i got to give a call to frozencpu and they inform me that because of the variety of setups for the maze4 they do not include the mounting hardware and that i would have to order it
luckily we had forgotten to order vga ramsinks and thermal paste...so we got all that ordered and it should be there by the time i get home tuesday
this concludes the introduction for this project

can you believe this thing only has 2 PCI slots..and a PCI-E slot
mobo all removed and ready for mounting the hardware
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1924.jpg
all bolted up and ready for the heat sink
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1926.jpg
water block is all remounted and mobo is ready to be put in the case
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1928.jpg
everything all mounted back up..sizing the hoses from the pump and radiator to go to the inside of the case
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1929.jpg
wider shot of the case so you can see how it looks with the exos on top..not too bad eh?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1930.jpg
the two hoses goin to the radiator and pump all cut and ready to be finished
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1931.jpg
hoses are now mounted in the case...and now getting an adapter from 1/4 inch to 3/8 in
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1932.jpg
two hoses completely mounted and adapted to internal hose size
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1933.jpg
first 3/8 hose mounted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v697/b4i7/project%20vaio/DSCF1934.jpg
next..came some figuring out of how to connect the two outlets and keep nice flowing lines with it, so i did a bit of experimenting, and i decided to go under the inlet hose

well,,i kinda got busy getting it done/talking to my grandparents i vacent seen in a while...and forgot to take a couple pics:(
but ive got the outlets hooked up..and the hose going to the bottom mounted

closeup of the waterblock showing the hookups of the outlets also..

final shots of the case with PSU remounted..i plan on doing some cable management when he gets his new stuff,,

overall the project went decent..a couple of major headaches, some disappointing phone calls to my dad as the project went on
downsides to the project were..
1 we never recieved the mounting hardware in time for the setup....so no water block setup
2 he didnt have room for the MAZE4 because of the lack of space on the motherboard between the PCI-E and PCI slots(couldnt remove a card because of his ATI HDTV wonder card....needs a basic tv tuner card in it also...and he didnt want to give up his ATI card)
but he likes the look of it overall for now
positives to the project so far
1we now have a spare MAZE4 block :lick:
2 i get to start looking for a new motherboard for him....socket 775 and a new case :D
3 i got plenty of practice setting a cooling system up
im thinkin the order of whats to be done is gonna change now
lemme know what you guys think..

looks awesome, liqud cooling a definite plus. but the radiator above the case looks weird. try putting it under the case and glue rubber feet to the bottom so it wont be damaged
have you ever seen an exos system? that would be kinda hard to do because of
1 it would look retarded to have a vaio sittin on top of a space that is only a lil bigger than the 80 mm fans in the top...and there are actually rubber feet on the bottom of the exos
and
2 the base of the sony vaio is hollowed out all it reall is is a pice of trim around the bottom thats reinforced to keep from splitting
so nice suggestion....but it would never work
plus this case wont be in use for much longer....hes gettin a lian li v1000 and new mobo
