View Full Version : Why aren't you modding?

C'mon guys, what's the dealio?

Out of all the posts, i can only see 2 worklogs that are getting updates right now. I know some of you are being lazy, some of you are procrastinating, some of you can't afford it, some of you are out of ideas...etc. etc. etc.

If you're being lazy, procrastinating, then let this be a kick up the ass for you. Get modding, and keep a worklog! If you have a good reason for not modding-money, parents, moving, weather, space, etc-that's fine-but c'mon guys, this isn't a 'best of you-tube' website. This is a website where the best share ideas and get some serious work done.

I know half of you agree, but couldn't be bothered saying it, or didn't want to start an argument/flamewar. Maybe the other half of you didn't realise this was a problem. But when amazing modders like willetfx, MDCS, and Tech-Daddy come here, they see a bunch of links to you-tube and they won't bother wasting any more time posting stuff on the site.

I'm not threatening or warning here. I just want to see you guys modding again.

Show me what you can do! :)

Yeah I am at home for three more days before going away again after getting back on monday from NZ. busy busy busy When I get back I will start modding.

I did notice that things had dropped off a bit but over Christmas the number of mods will pickup. Also alot of people will be saving money for christmas and/or spending it on presents or going away so it leaves little money for modding. While I am not in this boat it may be a factor.

Edit: Even just general forum activity has slumped off like there are less people asking for help and stuff.

Maybe we could have another comp that runs for a while for the best mod that is actually physically done in like a 3 month period.

Amen. Thanks Dave, someone had to say it.

I have a bit of modding-ish kinda stuff under my sleeve, but the reason I'm not full on modding is for a few reasons...

I'm building a vacuum former and a CNC machine. Both of these will be used for moding upon completion, but are taking up all my time and money currently.

I'm getting fairly heavy into paintball, and I just purchased a gun worth about $1000... as for the rest of you slackers... no excuses! And even if you can't mod or are in a situation like me, the least you could do is stop posting random **** in the chatterbox that is going to crap up these forums.

As Dave said, these forums have a reputation for being good forums - they're even listed in Paul's book! When someone reading Paul's book comes here and finds the best of youtube ****, we've let Paul down. That's not right.

Well I WAS waiting until I got my panels painted and have one super-mega-huge update for the grand finale. Buuuuuuut, I just had a major painting disaster (just made a Q&A post).

Well that, and sometimes it seems like there isn't much interest, but that might be because I only look at posts and not at view-count, lol.

Yes I have been slacking. I am currently working on a mod right now and I will get to posting the log. (I agree with the youtube comment since I am not really a fan of that site. Bandwidth waster...)

Imagine this:

as a computer...

I am part way through it and will start posting my log as my contribution. I am also working on turning an sgi workstation into a real pc.

I have had a bunch of excuses for not modding lately...

a spouse who hates it and keeps making excuses for "us" time instead of letting me play in the garage

a sick baby

holiday visitations with non custodial kids

saving money towards Christmas

planning, prepping, and packing for various winter hunting trips

I will get back to work the week after Thanksgiving.

Hehe I like that one. I should have talked with him before I started on the sphere work. I never knew how hard it is working with spheres trying to line up mounting holes and such. I am lucky in that the wife is a math teacher so she helped me with the math I had oh-so-long-ago forgot. We'll see how handy it is once I start drilling some holes in that sphere. I already have the mobo plate, the power supply mounted and the cd tray just got epoxied in place this weekend. Once I get home I will start the log. My intent is to have the bubblegum machine remain fully functional and even use the coin mechanism to turn the thing on and off.

For me, it's money and the fact that we are entering winter here. Snow makes it quite hard to spray paint when you don't have a paint booth or indoor facility of some sort.

bah, ive been slacking off too. its just so hard to keep school, the gym, and modding balanced. my current schedule has me at school at least until lunch each day, and im stuck until dinner on tuesdays and thursdays. im going to the gym every day now for at least an hour after dinner. by the time im done all that crap... its 9:00 and i just want to sit down and watch the daily show and the colbert report.

im hoping that something will happen soon. my next semester starts in january, and my only long day is thursday, and friday i dont even go to school. im definitely going to make longer trips to the gym, but i should be able to work in more modding/planning time.

for now im just trying to be helpful where possible... and even thats hard to stay on top of. so many questions and post, and im so bad at keeping track of what ive said and where.

anyways... ive got the money (about $1300 free in the bank right now). ive got the ideas (i should really make a list) and the ideal starting case to buy. i just need the right motivation in a month or so.

For me its money, and the lack of a pc to mod. Ive got a case but as i mentioned else were on this forum i don't quite feel up to cutting her up ... yet. Once i get some more experience with my dremel, and maybe a proper workstation (last time i tried to cut something i held it in one hand and cut with the other :( ) im looking to put a window in her and run my power cables behind the motherboard tray

Once i get my hands on a cheap case with little value, ill try to get some practice, and ill probably post up a worklog of that.

I have some money comeing my way but as mentioned alot of people are saveing for christmas. Also, once i get a job i want to save up for a new mac book before i head of to college. Im not going to have room for a desktop on campus, so i want a nice laptop.

Ive got some ideas for some scratch built pc's involving bent acrylic and/or water features, but i dont have the resources or know how to work it all out

I do agree that the forums seem to have more going on in the chatterbox than they do in the work log sections. Its sort of sad because i was attracted to tbcs because of the friendly atmosphere and knowlegable user base. I was hopeing to pick up some nice techniques before i attempt my first serious mod.

Umm.. I just started here...? I also have a baby on the way (due december 29th, my first!) and I'm having a daughter, so I doubt I will ever have any real money ever again............ sgtm knows what I'm talking about ;)

I AM coming up with plans for my fish tank mod though... will post those as I soon as I get my sketches and demensions figured out..

I'm actually tryin to sell my comp for money to buy/mod a new one! :bunny: But that's not going so well so far haha. As for the rest of my financial situation, we had a huge water leak and had a $600 water bill last month that we have to pay right away but we'll get some back in credit in the next few months....that helped make rent/utilities/cell bill/grocery bills total hovering right around $1000 this month...Which doesnt sound bad, unless your makin $1100-$1200 a month like me :( AND Christmas is coming up....my X-Center still isnt even done and all I have to do is paint it but I cant even afford paint! Hahaha.

Well, I know I'm kinda new here ... and I guess I'm still a li'l bashful when it comes to posting in most of the threads, but I had to put my $0.02 in here.

Dear Sir,

I didn't realize that 2 1/2 weeks without an update would be cause for alarm, I apologize most deeply. I have allowed work and family to take up far too much of my free time, this is obviously deeply regrettable and be assured that I am putting measures in place to avoid this in the future.

I shall immediately (if not sooner) return all of my attention to the progression of my mod, including the obviously overdue posting of updates to my worklog.

In closing I shall merely re-state my DEEPEST apologies for my lack of diligence, I had obviously not considered the undue stress and frustration that this would cause for my fellow forumers and most especially for the administrators/moderators of this forum.

I will do better in the future.

Sincerely

The Slacker a.k.a. FyreKnight

ROFLMAO ... took like 10 min to write that, kept laughing my a$$ off and changing it to make it more SERIOUS.

Seriously, sorry 'bout the delay but crap happens. I will be once again able to work on my case tomorrow and hopefully will have a nice Juicy update to post and appease the FORUM GODS by the end of the day.

'Till then peace all.

Fyreknight

Lol...don't worry FyreKnight...it was mainly aimed at the regulars such as Slug Toy, SnowFire, and the rest of the regulars who haven't modded in a long time. You're keeping a (kick-ass) worklog at the mo, so you're definately excused. Thanks for the laughs tho!

Yeah, it's hard to balance Modding/school/gaming/social time/etc and get everything done =/

so when situations like this come up, i generally push modding off to the side to make way for things I find more important.

I've actually been too busy working out. For the last nine weeks I've been on a strict diet (Sometimes totally fasting for days on end) and I've already lost 38lbs. I want to lose more, but that means no modding.

Slug Toy
11-25-2006, 06:15 PM
good for you satan, losing weight is always a good idea. just be careful about those strict diets and fasting. that sort of thing can lead to the so called yoyo dieting where you lose lost of weight, but put it back on. the big trick is that fasting puts your body into a different rhythm so that when you start eating again, you actually put fat on even more efficiently than before.

what i would suggest is lowering starches as much as possible (meaning dont eat too many potatoes and rice). up your protein intake (generally 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight) and also keep in mind that meats are about 25% protein so you want about 5.6 grams of lean meat per kilogram of body weight.

if you arent already, might i suggest weight training? it helps so much because its an awesome way to burn energy. nothing beats struggling to move a bunch of iron around. i know from first hand experience. i started in june. in the first month i got my six pack back, and now after six months ive got no fat on me and ive gained about 10 pounds of muscle. the trick there is that you just eat lots of meat and try not to eat junk food. dont monitor your weight too close either... and then all the sudden youll check one day and holy crap, you've lost like 5 inches on your waist.

Check out the thread link over @ Lost In Space..... (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?p=57153#post57153)

I posted over @ Modding Q&A... please move if it should go somewhere else. :)

Hope everybody can chip in to make something cool out of it.

My inspiration came from all the Tech classes I failed. Go through a bunch of magazines / pictures, both of computers and everything else electronic, write about what you like/dont like, and then figure out what you'd love to have in a case.

This, ultimately was the deadening of my case modding, I found the Antec P180 Silver, ordered it, hopefully it looks as good in person as it does on the net :D

my inspiration comes from random things that i see. hell, i can find inspiration in a tree. look at the complexity and the textures and try to mimic it into a case.

hey thats actually a cool theme...
