Well here we go. This is my first project to be posted on a forum. Let's just hope that everyone likes the designs I will introduce.

First, here's a rundown of the main system.

CPU: Intel Pentium III 1.0 GHZ

MOTHERBOARD: ABIT SL6 with 100-133mhz fsb, integrated intel i180 chipset, ultra 66 compatible IDE controller, and a slew of other worthy goodies of an older mobo.

RAM/Memory: 3 slots of pc133 256mb each. (one slot is for PCI buss i think)

OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows XP Pro Corporate Service Pack 2.

DISK DRIVES: 2 Seagate 40gig HDDs, 2 Sony DVD/CDRW Drives (hopefully). and of course one ancient Sony 3.5" FDD.

VIDEO CARD(S): 2 NVIDIA Geforce 4000 vga compatible with integrated s-video output. integrated intel video graphics chip (onboard) [not to be used]

PCI/OTHER: USB 2.0 5 port PCI card, Creative Sound Blaster Live! 7.1 channel PCI sound card. D-Link 10/100 WI-FI/wireless ethernet adapter, NETGEAR 10/100 Ethernet Adapter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is it for now on system specs, maybe there will be some minor changes in the future. I already own most of the above hardware but the two DVD rom drives and the second video card are not in my possesion as of yet.:(

The case design is simple... Build a rather large black acrylic cube, sculpt ridges and forms out of expanding insulation foam, add tons of little LEDs that can be controlled by some sort of homemade circut, and assimilate more ideas as project goes on. I also want to incorporate some new cooling and ventilation techniques into the case.

I expect this project will take quite a while to complete. however, the outcome will be really cool to look at.

I will post some scetches of the design up soon.

In case you need some inspiration, a dutch guy made this borg cube:

(on the bottom you can see the finished pictures by clicking on "pagina 03: het resultaat"

Good luck!

im certainly not saying that the guy who did that borg cube isnt talented, that mod alone proves he is. but doesnt a borg cube have more depth? as in you can see the inside a little bit, even though its still all piping and other mechanical looking stuff.

perhaps you should go with that concept, except instead of endless assortments of random pieces exposed by gaps in the outer layers, it would reveal the pc inside. of course, you couldnt tell what parts you were using even, there wouldnt be much to see, but it would give it less of a "shell" look and create a fuller looking cube, complete with cube guts ^_^ i suggest renting which ever newer star trek movie had the borg in it.

also, the borg use more than just cubes for their ship designs, but i think its the most common and definitely the most recognizable.

I found this image with google, It's a borg cube orbiting earth. You can see that it doesn't have that much depth at all...

i have to agree with aka_ra watch the movie to take your ideas or use a borg sphere there are about 12 different borg ship designs. some of greater power than the cube even

 I just had a few new inovations while i was in class earlier... the dvd drives can be put in upside down verticaly so the drive tray opens downward... then what i thought of doing was mounting it in a custom drive mount so that its flush with the outer surface... then i can screw a plate to the front part of the tray so that when it closes it is hidden and when it opens it exposes the tray facing top forward... i'll se if i cant get a little illustration of this concept.

then, what if i can get my hands on some fiber optic cable i thought of centralizing the indicator lights and effects lights inside the cube to give it the "cube guts"8) look when i leave open "canyons" on the outer surface.
The design will probably have more then one surface... maybe more like many different size cubes to make up one large cube. again i'll get some illustrations to further show my idea.

Thnks for the suggestions... I'll be sure to watch Star trek insurection again for the 20th time.:p

I just thought of something else. the picture of the cube floating over earth almost looks like a cube made of mobos...:p

also, aka_ra and murader brought up a good point... however, the borg cube design is one of the most recognizeable ships of the borg so that is why i chose it for this concept mod.

THNX pictures soon to come. started stencil cunstruction.

Well I just came back to the forums after about five months... I know I know
I'm a slacker. However, I found that I do Not Have the Budget To Pay for the materials on this project. I now have to ditch this project and move on to something less expensive. :hurt: visit my posts on Big White And Ugly... This will be my Resurection Project.
