Hey dude, I'd love to help you build your computer, I just have a few questions for you.

First here's an answer, don't worry about Windows XP, it's fine for both Intel and AMD.

Now for the questions.
1.)Where are you buying all of your parts from?
2.)How up to date do you want this computer to be?
3.)Can you post links to your parts?

I would recommend checking out www.newegg.com, and then matching up the parts that you want. Edit your original post with the links.

If you are building an older system with DDR 400 memory, and the like, you may be able to get them cheap from some of the members of this forum! I know that I have 2Gigs of DDR 400 memory, as well as an extra 500watt PSU.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, PM me if I don't respond in a while, my subscriptions are acting up a little.

First, I'd go for a Core 2 Duo system, more performance for cheaper.
Second, what Graphics Card are you getting?
Lastly, how much money are you willing to spend?

I agree with Indy. If you spend a little bit more money you can build an up to date system. DDR2, Core 2, PCI-E 16x, SLI, all will be possible in a new system. If you want to stay AMD you can, but Intel's CPU's are pwning right now.

Cool thanks for the info sorry for taking so long to respond lol I am making a new list of parts pretty soon and my budget is unknown since i haven't talked to my parents about it yet my guess is under $1000.00.

Why do you have 2 optical drives and an ethernet adapter? Do you have specific reasons for buying them?

I'm not sure if you can go with Core 2 Duo because the motherboards are a bit more expensive, especially the top end ones. I think you should stick with AMD with the budget you got.

First problem ^^

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+(65W) Windsor 2.2GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor 179.99
MotherBoard: ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
72.99

Erm motherboard with skt 939? and a processor with skt AM2???

Yeah, some of those parts won't work together, but we can get that all sorted out once you know what you want.

I can just link you a good setup if you want. I recently rebuilt my computer.

EDIT:
I just went ahead and made a cheap setup.
It's only at $875, it uses integrated sound, the E6300 processor, and an XFX 7600GT video card.
Here is the link (https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=4769787&WishListTitle=compforcompgeek)

It can be modified as you see fit, I would upgrade some things, but for the most part this is a solid system. You can get the E6400 for a bit more, and a sound card. You can also change the case to save $, or lower the HD space... for some reason Newegg has a ton of OEMs right now.

Meh, I'm using the case, and it's awesome... for an extra $3 or whatever you get the PSU as well. I haven't used that PSU specifically, but for $3 it's worth checking out. If you don't like it just buy a better one.

Personally I love that case though. It's so easy to put things together. Plus it comes with 2 80mm fans and 1 120mm fan. I need to get a digital camera, I'll take a pic of my case.

Most of the parts on that wishlist are the ones I use, I just have an XFX 7900 GT, an X-Fi sound card, and a Rosewill 600 watt PSU. I've never had a problem with any of those parts/brands, and with the Smilodon case you should be able to put it all together in like 30 min.

For $37 you can upgrade to the 2.0GHz E6400...

Ya the only problem saaw with it was the prcessor socket. But other than that it looks good. I love that case too by the way.

I might check out getting that hard drive for myself.

Damn that case is awesome. I just bought it a few days ago, but something troubles me, the brand is Recom and the model is Recom Powerstation and it looks exactly the same. Here is the site: recom.nl

Are they rips of each other or what?
