Basically, I just got a payout of £500 for turning up to college and doing well, so Im looking to upgrade my pc. Ive always wanted a mac, so im looking at their laptops. Which one would give my pc a run for its money. My pc is:

Athlon Xp 2000+
768mb Ram
240gb HDD
Ati Radeon 9200se 128mb AGP

A MacBook would be your best bet. They start at $1099.

Which one? Should I fork out the extra for the white with 1gb of ram, or would the cheapest one beat my pc?

I like the black one, but I want a new computer soon, so Id be willing to buy one of the white ones if it was better than what im running now.

The only diffrence between the mid-white and the black models are the hard drive space. If you can live with 80Gb, then get the white and save yourself $200. Or you could go all out and get the black. All of the MacBooks will be better than your current rig.

Panther I think.

Think Leopard is coming out soon.

I think I might wait till Leopard is out, cos then I don't have to fork out for an upgrade, and there might be some hardware upgrades

Do you think I might be able to run Flight Simulator X on the Black Macbook?

Or will it look absolutely awful and/or have terrible FPS?

so you had to be bribed into showing up for school?. wtf has the world come to.....

Macs are for sandal wearing, patchoulie-dabbing bohemians.

I don't get bribed, its a "performance bonus".

EDIT: What the hell is a patchoulie? Actually, explain that whole sentence =\

I presume he's refering to EMA, which is a system in the uk where kids can get payed for going to school, BUT only if their parents earn less than 30k.
My mum's a single parent now earning like, 1000 more than the threshold income so I can't get it. All of my friends get 30 quid a week from it ($60), and what do they spend it on? Books? school stuff? food? clothing? drugs.
That is all.
90% of the people who receive EMA do not deserve it. They get given vast amounts of money to stay in school and smoke pot whilst our city's hospital must close down due to lack of funding. Something is SERIOUSLY wrong about that.

Most of my EMA goes towards college stuff. £8 for friggin buses, and about £10 for food. But the £500 isn't going on any college stuff :D

Get a Alienware 5550 notebook, they happen to be on sale right now :D Free upgrade to a 6600 256mb, free upgrade to XP Media Center and when it comes out Vista Premium Home edition, plus a $100 instant rebate.

I honestly would never buy a Mac if you intend to do any sort of gaming (even Flight Simulator). Oh and FYI I wouldn't be surprised if the Macbook couldn't run Flight Simulator X at all, due to it's integrated graphics solution. I tried installing DOD:S on my brothers laptop with integrated graphics. The laptop was nearly brand new and the integrated graphics only supported up to Direct X 6.0. Macbooks all have integrated graphics unless you want to spend 2 grand on a Pro just to get an X1600.

Besides that you will have to repurchase your entire software library for Mac OS.
And if you'd sooner just install boot camp you've completely defeated the purpose of purchasing a Mac. :D

Anyway thats just my 2 cents.

I really wanted a mac though.

Id have to run bootcamp, but Id mainly use Mac Os, but Id need windows for Visual Studio for college (although I could run parallels).

I really want to play FSX cos this pc im on is terrible and barely runs 2004.

Thats entirely not true... They advertise on thier tv commercials that you can run any windows program on a mac, including games. And mac's even though they may appear to have "less" power, perform far better than an equivalent windows machine.

I'd love to get myself one of thoes dual proc G5's

I haven't seen that commercial, but they are referring to boot camp. And they don't mention that you have to pay $150 to get the Windows OS so you can use that feature. As far as performance goes I have never been impressed with Macintosh. To be honest with you they offer nothing that a similarly priced PC doesn't offer.

I currently have an iBook and I think it's a great laptop. Sure it's old (G4 800 Mhz), but the thing is so well built that it doesn't even look a month old. The battery also lasts just as long as the day I got it... well at least until it got recalled :D Get a mac laptop over a generic pc one, their much more solidly built and will physically last a lot longer.

As a side note, apple makes sure that their new OSs support as far back as computer's they made 5 years ago, so that means that even Tiger (the current OS) can run on my crufty old power mac 350Mhz.:D

Who said anything about money? Sure, PC's are far better in price. If you had a mac with simmilar spec's, it would kick the teeth out of that PC.

And for top of the line performance... Dont even get me started.. The base-line mac pro boasts Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" processors. Not to mention the 16Gb of ram that you can cram in there.

Try and find a dual core xenon PC for under $2500...

Back on topic

For doing anything with meida i.e. Photos, Music, Podcasting and Video's that mac is best. It comes with most of the software you need. You don't just get an OS you get everything you need.

Get one of the intel macs. As you are at COLLEGE!!!!! I suggest a Mac Book.

The cheapest one comes in at £749 pounds. I know that is a bit more then your £500.

You could get the cheapest iMac for £679

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/61054042/wa/PSLID?mco=899BECBF&nclm=iMac&wosid=OW7zIiwxKRgg2CihQx1G0pSSOPn

If you really didn't want to spend more than £500 pounds you could buy the cheapest Mac Mini for £399 pounds. And try and get a screen on the cheap somewhere.
