the majority of my schools computers are horizontal with the montitors on top.
i would think that the heavy CRT on the case, would cause alot of stress on the case, bending it inwards. are there any advantages to this type of position?

It doesn't matter. You could have your case on top of your monitor if you want to be different. The horizontal cases that are intended to be under the monitor are designed to be able to hold the weight of the monitor on top of it.

One advantage of this is that the wires are slightly closer together, so they can be organized. Many libraries/schools do this so that they aren't in the way. That's about it.
