Any tips and advice on how to get my computer running that best that it can and getting the most out of it? I was running 3DMark06 and my frame rate in some areas was much lower than I'm willing to accept. On the CPU test it ran between 0 and 1 frame per second.

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6700
Video card: 7950GX2 (stepping-up to an 8800GTX through eVGA)
Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
RAM: two 1gb sticks of Corsair DDR2 800

My score on the 3DMark test was 4744

Sometimes I feel like my performance could be better. Am I perhaps expecting too much? Or would I be ale to tweak it to make it run better?

it is slow for the hardware you have

*check the drivers, make you shure you got the leatest ones,

*check you hdd for spyware/adware/malware (this thing can eat you cpu alive), also check the hdd for viruses

*and check you cooling, make shure you dont have any dead fan, or a heatsink full of dust

I had the same question recently, got some good tips from people and added a few discoveries to a thread in tech talk, you might find something there useful. http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4874

By the way, this got my 3Dmark06' from 5500 up to high 7000's.

That is kinda low, I've got 3770 with my rig and its less powerful than yours :)

Yeah, it seemed a lot lower than what it should be for my machine.

I don't mean to say that you don't know what you're doi'n, you obviously do, but its sometimes easy to overlook the daftest things. Check there is nowt running in the background that you don't need to be running. And what GT40 said check your temps and fan speeds.
Have you added anything recently, hardware or software that you can think of. If so get rid and start again.

are you forcing AA or AI filtering or anything like that? i can imagine it killing your test scores

did you find anything wrong?

Closed out Firefox (though I'm pretty sure I did for the first test too), closed out SpySweeper, turned off DesktopEarth and put up a still image as my wallpaper. I'd still like to see some better FPS on it though, especially on the CPU test.

I've seen a 7156 3d06 Score from another guy I know running an e6700/8800GTX. 44-something is way too low.

To optimize overall:
Disable visaul themes
Cut applications to a minimum. Security, then whatever you actually use. Aside from security and games, I use 6 apps. iTunes, FF, ControlMK (It's a useless application unless you want to use a gamepad as a mouse), ATi Catalyst Control Center, Quicktime, and Trillian.

To optimize for 3dMark06:
Turn off your internet connection
disable everything except windows processes. This includes firewalls, chat clients, etc.
Oh, and if you can, run 800*600, or smallest res, no AA, no AI, no Trilinear/Bilinear filtering, advanced shaders, everything.

This thread is kind of old. Turns out I also didn't have my RAM dual chanelled, and after I did that I got a score of 7968. And with my new 8800GTX I got 10,286 even with programs such as 3ds Max running.
