Hi all,

I've been wanting to do a military mod for some time, and Ouch's Interocitor really fueled the fire. Looking for a place to snag something similar to the radio he used, but different. I've spent an inordinate amount of time surfing ebay to no avail. I've also looked at several military surplus sites, but didn't see anything inspiring. Anyone have any other good websites I might check. Thanks for the help.

Scout

Actually, I did find a few possibilities on ebay but they were more $$ than I wanted to shell out.

You could actually go to your nearest larger military base and ask if they have any scrap stuff you can take away. Although this may not be suitable to do in your own country.

Thanks for the idea bud, but I'm afraid that's not gonna be an option for me. Aren't any major military installations near me. Only way I'm gonna find anything locally is a military surplus store. Otherwise, it'll have to be online. I appreciate the suggestion.

You took my idea....

Seriously, I want to do a mod with a USMC theme, since I am a former Marine and all. I'm just prohibited by cash though. I have an ammo can that used to hold M2 .50 cal rounds. It looks like this:

Gah, I would kill for an ammo case.

I actually wanted my first mod to be an ammo case mod with green LED fans blowing outwards, and when you opened the top of the case you were greeted with all the optical drives and all the IO ports on the motherboard.

I actually met a guy who made a server in an ammo case -- then shockproofed it. He dropped it from about 6ft, opened it up, everything was fine, and it still booted.

EDIT:

Oh, and military surplus stores don't always have stuff like ammo cases. I know the surplus store near me only has stuff like clothing, some stickers, a lot of boots, canteens, and gas cans (which are pretty big, could probably fit a computer in one of those, too).

Meh, I've only got a few 5.56 cal cases :/ Theyre quite small :/

use the 5.56's for radiators?

That would probably work for the rad and res.

The ammo can is tried and true, and my personal fav is the hard plastic 25 mm ammo can. It's been done several times by others though. If I can't find something more unique, I may try to do something different with one of those.

I'm gonna keep looking on Ebay from time to time as it is probably the best bet for finding something different to work with. In the meantime, I'll just keep saving up the $$ until inspiration finds me.

www.sportsmansguide.com

the site above has a surplus section that occasionally has good deals. I've been wanting to get one of the grenade cases to file my bills/med records in.

Yeah, I looked at the field phones as well on eBay. Starting at 80$ didn't seem like a bright idea to buy one, since I did not want to use it, only tear it apart.

You do not actually need a radio to do a radio mod, find a few dials, and an old oscilloscope you can throw into a custom sized box. Have the scope show the audio-out or something.

That would be pretty sweet.

I was considering an oscilloscope as a possibility. It does have a lot of potential for customization. I'll just have to see what I can find.

Thanks for the link Kabniel.

Yea that first one would make a kick @$$ server all right. It's has that whole price thing working against it though. Not to mention a pain to get into my brother's garage for our quarterly lan parties. We could get it in the garage, but we'd have to cut down on about half of our participants.......;)
