if we were to cut a hole in the top of a computer case, what kind of tool would i use for 80mm fan and how big would we should make the hole?

Ok there are many ways of doing this.

You can trace out the circle and cut around it using dremel.

Or you can clamp a peice of wood under the top of the case and cut through the top with a hole saw.

Here is a really good guide on doing the mod with a hole saw. They use a 76mm hole saw as it is the closet to 80mm.
