View Full Version : What is it with advertising spam on forums these days
This seems to be a growing problem. People (or perhaps bots?) registering an account on a message board and making a thread advertising things just like a spam e-mail. In the past few days I've seen two of those here. Not the first time I've seen it happen though.
Even a small community forum i post on withlike less than 10 members has this happen http://www.wytonline.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=669
And there was another one there a few days ago.
I don't know what's with this. It just seems strange to me.

I'm on a community with about up to 50 active members and we get stuff like that all the time.

It's a pain in the ass. We just ban their IP's but it doesn't make much of a difference. All you can really do is delete it.

Dude, please don't link to spam from other sites. We have enough here as it is.

I may have an idea to reduce them. Most of the spams are into the trading section, you could add a minimum post requirement to this section?

spammers don't really care what category they put their crap in--they'd just find another thread.

The spams run bots that address specific URLs. If you click on a forum, you'll notice that the URL is numbered. It's just a coincidence that the numbers the SPAMBOTS run for us seem to be the trading section.
There isn't really any way to avoid the spambots apart from using a 100% unique program. We use a commercially released software, so spambots target us more-but we get product upgrades that help to fight them. It's an ongoing, pointless war, that's costing us money to fight. Makes you wonder if there isn't a conspiracy going on here....hm...actually curious enough about this to start taking IP tracks of our spammers, find out where it's coming from. It's always the same crap, via a dynamic IP...
