Here is the right link

Case

HDD

I see what you mean. So there were no brackets supplied. With either the case or the HDD?

You can put it in the bay with the floppy drive fine.

Arden

nope no brackets.... so no problems i should be aware of about puting it next to the flopy?

isunktheship
12-11-2006, 05:55 AM
no. thats where i put mine before i bought a case with brackets. btw you have a floppy permenantly installed? I only attatch it when i'm messing with the BIOS(updates), but thats usually a one time deal, then I never use it again.

OFF TOPIC/DONT WANT TO CLUTTER FORUM WITH NEW THREAD:

Do I need to buy like a surge protector or something? is there anything i should consider buying?

AKA_RA

surge protector is a must. UPS(look it up on newegg for explaination if you need) is another good thing to have but not needed nearly as much.

I myself have my computer, and everything attached to my computer, plugged into a big insdustrial power strip, and that strip plugged into a protector on the wall outlet. I'll look into getting a UPS later on.

A UPS is a good idea period. Not only does it offer the ability to shutdown your computer safely, it also protects from dirty power, brownouts, and lightning strikes.

If cost is problematic, get a certified refurbished APC UPS. They still have a warranty, they are certified to work and cost about half as much as new ones.

Also, it's a good idea to keep a spare working lead acid battery for your UPS just in case. It takes companies a couple of days to ship out batteries and cost a good amount to ship.

Your hard drive should fit in the hard drive cage. If it fits in the floppy and doesn't bother you, leave it. No harm, no foul.
Congrats on learning more about the PC.

are the surge protectors on those power strips with like 8 outlets good enough?

killed a mobo once with them during a storm, should I continue? ;)

nil8
12-13-2006, 12:00 AM
Not really. Most of the time those are 1 time fuse setups. After the fuse gets popped, it's worthless.

They don't protect against brownouts or lightning strikes. They also don't protect your incoming data lines most of the time.

On top of that, they don't offer you the ability to shut your equipment down safely. I would suggest using one behind a ups, not in place of a ups.

[color=red]jeu guys, another question...i wanna know where on my floppy and optical i connect the cable to my mobo? they seem to use the same kinda cable and theres only one slot?

slytherock
12-13-2006, 04:14 AM
3 things:
1 Floppy? still alive?
2 The cables for the floppy is smaller then the Optical/hdd ones. Same kind of ribbon cables, but the optical ones are larger
3 It would help to know the Mobo you own...

Hope it helped :)

If you plug you're $500+ computer into the wall socket directley, you're an idiot. You're better off throwing it out of the 2nd story window when a small little lightning storm hits.

It has holes man. It happens alot. You're either installing the hdd the wrong direction, the ide pins has to be facing to the motherboard and you might have installed it too low. Thats what happens to me, I put the hdd too low, if you put ur hand under it and push up it'll eventully get there.

Arden, you should make this page you're homepage - http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/learntobuild.html

Arden

ya, the cables im trying to use are the HDD cable for the optical drive and an FDD for the floppy. those are the only ones that'll fit...and i think my mobo only have one port that'll take those!

nil8
12-14-2006, 01:08 AM
Ok, the not so easy way to tell is to count the pins. Floppy cables have 36, IDE cables have 40.
The same thing applies for their hookups.
Another way to find out on the motherboard is to look up the basic diagram in the manual. It will tell you what things are and where they are.

Is that list of items your pc?

Arden
12-14-2006, 02:02 AM
ya, and uh, is the floppy and optical drive cables different.

nil8
12-14-2006, 08:52 AM
They look identical. The way to tell the difference is the number of holes on the ends.

Fear
12-14-2006, 12:22 PM
The floppy IDE cable is slightley smaller then the Optical drive.

A Hardrive and Opticle drive use the same. Floppy is differnt. And now adays, Sorry no offence, but why would you use a floppy? I mean I understand you can transport data...but 1 megabyte? Come on! Try finding a media card reader. Possible one with USB ports, SD slots and so.

There's also a twist in the floppy IDE cable.

I won't give you bad Rep. but let me explain myself:

*Firstly, I bought most of my components OEM as to save money; that means I don't have manuals.

*I was just messing around in that topic. Are people on this forum kind of sensitive?

*Thanks for the info.

EDIT:

1) I just appologized to him.
2) Regarding the last clause in your post, I just thought you should no that I saved up for about seven years to get this rig. And thats including holiday money, so don't just think i'm some spoiled kid. I worked my ass off for the rig and excuse me if I want to make sure I don't screw up.

I just checked out my motherboard manual. Interesting problem: The little "Map/diagram" of the board has a slot labbled FDD and Floppy Drive Connector; Which should I use? Contrarily; nothing is labled IDE.

You plug it into the FDD connector, the IDE may also be labeled PATA.
