View Full Version : I guess I'm kind of nervous

I've never done anything big before. I don't even know where to start really. I have a bunch of ideas, but I also really have no ideas and have no idea what I'm wanting to do. I guess I'm also feeling a little intimidated by everything here too. But Crimson's work, as well as the regular users. I do know that I want to do something big though. Like the Doom 3 project, I want mine to be big. I don't even know what tools to use, what materials to use, how to work with those materials, or anything.

Right now I'm trying to think of some ideas, and looking at what I already have to work with.

I have this case, which somebody is also wanting to buy from me

Though I ended up dismembering it for no apparent reason

If I end up not selling it, and decide to use it in a mod, it has a volume and a fan controller on it

There's this old computer that a friend gave to me to see if I could upgrade anything with it. It's not too good, and I don't see anything happening with it. So I could either use the case or use some of the components of it in some way.

http://codeinsurrection.com/pics/computer/PICT6460.JPG

Then there's this computer, which isn't too bad, and would do a lot better if it just had a video card. Of course, windows kept crashing whenever I tried to boot it up and now all it says it "Disc read error". I also might just sell this too.

And there's always my current computer, the amazing machine I am typing this one. I can always just build ontop of this.

I just don't know what to do :(

How about you do a file server with the old PC?

Question::: Can you provide me with a name of your clear case?
I like it!!!

As to your computer... well... maybe water cooling.
Or making an integrated UPS base with electrical multiplugs...

:)

My case is made by Sunbeam. It's this one actually http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811166010

I planned on eventually getting a UPS, but just putting it in here though

And I'll eventually add water cooling, but I didn't want that to be the mod. I was thinking maybe I could use this case as like a base, and build ontop of it. I just want to do something bigger than the standard mods.

Hmm... I see a nice Wacom tablet there on the floor... perfect for the Community PC Project! :p :p

You say you want to do 'something big'.
Big as in 'Dude, that's waaay too big. WTF?' ?

That'd be cool.
Hey, if you put LEDs in the sides of the acrylic, does it light up?
Or if you drill a small hole, but LED in there, then fill up with transparent 'goop'... would it light up?
It'd be interesting to see that...

(( just throwing ideas out there... :) ))

This case actually has has 12 LEDs on it, I just have them shut off. It's also reactive to ultravoilet light. Though since I always have my shade closed, I don't see much of that. It does glow around the edges with just my regular light on though. In full sunlight though, it can turn completely purple. That's why I alays take pictures of it without using the flash. I want to do something big, as in epic. As in amazing. Something much more than ordinary. Something extravagant.

Is money a problem?

I mean... you can go water cooling, with a water fountain cooler for the water rez.
If you want to go even *more* out... you can install a internal combustion generator and have it power your computer, monitor, stuff, and cooler.

Ok... maybe not.

Maybe you can use some dry fog machines?
They sell those on eBay... they're these small fog making 'disc pucks'. Oooo... fog inside your case... ooooo....

Only problem is that... well, fog inside the case = humidity everywhere.

Hmmm... thinking... thinking... :)

The problem with money is that I don't have it. I have really nothing to invest into it right now, and don't even have a lot of the proper tools I'd need to do this. What's not a problem though, is me saving up money. I just need to find a way to start getting money again. I need to find a job again and I'm running low on my reserve.

OMG That is old ? It still can make a goood frezbee ;)

It's a good start for a mod, got alot of interesting parts on it; the VU meter, Temp reader...

Though I ended up dismembering it for no apparent reason
I like doing this kind of "no reason" things :)

Then there's this computer, which isn't too bad, and would do a lot better if it just had a video card. Of course, windows kept crashing whenever I tried to boot it up and now all it says it "Disc read error". I also might just sell this too.
I dont know how far you went for this problem, so I wont spend too much time on this.
Keep crashing: check the PSU
Disk boot error: Disk priority, jomper setting, windows corruption

And there's always my current computer, the amazing machine I am typing this one. I can always just build ontop of this.
You can start with a little wire cleaning, and see how it goes, what you need, what can be done.

I think you have enough stuff in there for a great and cool case build. I own a couple of empty cases like that, and just need time to do a great mod. Just take the time to imagine what you like/dislike from those cases. and rethink them. My personnal philosophy is "Rethink your hardware" and ht include he case.
Have fun :)

I've done a little wire cleaning since those pictures were taken. As well as some dust and skin flake and whatever cleaning. I'd just format the drive in the other one if I didn't have files I still wanted on it.

Okay, for ideas. I'm wanting to do something Starcraft related. Perhaps an Infested Terran theme to it (which would go great with a computer actually). Another idea I had was from after looking at the Doom 3 mod. I was thinking of making the entire computer look like the Xel Naga temple. Big, like the Doom 3 one. Another idea was to go from something Protess related. Maybe like a Carrier, and I could get some of that RAM with the lights on it that shows temperature and words and it would be like the fusion reactor on the inside. Now I need to settle on something. It's definately going to be Starcraft themed.

And nobody touches the Wacom

STARCRAFT!!!
OMG!
That game rules!

I like the Xel Naga temple idea... it would look stellar.
That's a great idea!!!!
I like it!
Go for it man... go for it. :)

Damn it... :(

hehehe... :)

I've loved Starcraft ever since in came out back in 98. For the first 6 years I so, I probably played it every day. I even have the cinematic DVD (which should also be a good reference for the design).

I'm a Protoss/Carrier king of guy.

I would spend everything I could building carriers and upgrading them.

I remember I once played against a friend of mine...
And he said that he saw two carriers coming, and he was ready with ****loads of Goliaths.

Problem for him was, that I had my carriers separated in groups.
Soon after the initial ones arrived, a nice fleet of about 8 of my carriers parked right on top of his Goliaths... ehehehe...

Hey man, I'm going to think about this Startcraft thing... I like the idea!

I just have no idea how i'd make the temple though. Actually, I have no idea how I'd make any of those ideas. I don't know what material to use or how to shape it.

DaJe

Alright, so first up is tools. What are some good tools for me to have? I have a drill, with a bunch of bits, so I can make all kinds of holes (though I should get like an 80mm attachment for drilling fan holes if needed). Now, for smoothing and cutting and etching and al the crap, I should get a Dremel, right? Unless I should use a big circular saw for cutting >_>. Anyways, what's a good Dremel to get? Now, this is the biggest part that I am clueless about. I of course, wouldn't want me case to just be a flat rectangle, I'd want to build ontop of it. Now, for this, I have no idea what kind of materials I should use for different things, or how to shape and form any of it. This is going to be a long road.

Can you post some concept pictures of the temple you are trying to create, and some sketched plans or something? I like the sound of this idea, but don't know what you are trying to build exactly.

Wow, that has lots of potential to be a great mod! But you definately have a project here. Since this is going to need to be built from scratch, you need to start at the beginning and start drawing some plans on how you intend to put it together. Crimson_Sky usuall recommends building replica parts to scale for each of your components (like mother board, video cards, power supply, etc...) and arrange them in such a way that they will fit and have good airflow. Then you can design your structure around it so you only have to do it once. Start with some cheap scrap material (wood, cardboard, or whatever) and build a mock-version of your shape to get an idea of how you can make it work. I would just start by making a pyramid frame and add layers of detail on top of the frame. Make sense?

DaJe
12-16-2006, 07:14 PM
It does make sense. I have some cardboard boxes I could use, but I'm also just going to get some cheap plywood to build with too. I guess I could make the inner components out of plywood. What I want is a big project, it just seems a little intimidating though. But once I start at it, I should start getting a lot better idea of what I'm doing. And what's good about build a case from nothing is that i can arrange things however I want. Perhaps putting the motherboard on the bottom.

If I ever add more RAM to my computer, I'm getting this

Corsair’s new XPERT series is the world's first line of memory modules that monitor parametric data of the memory real-time! Corsair XPERT modules use an integrated microcontroller to measure Voltage, Temperature, and Frequency on the memory module. Each of these parameters, along with a user-programmable scrolling marquee are shown on a big alpha-numeric display. Each module includes a high-efficiency cast aluminum Corsair heatsink and 24 activity LED's that show the level of memory activity on each bank.

Which I think would work well this with type of mod.

1) Starcraft is the greatest game ever created, you should def go with this idea...
2) That DDR almost gave me an orgasm.. (just wanted to put that out there)

I dont want to know where you put that RAM, but it's probbly not where it belong...
That RAM is sick, very ocable, on top of my list too

Okay, at about 10 or 11 am yesterday, I hadn't slept yet, and I started to get ideas. Know how in the video, a beam charges in the middle and comes down? Well my idea was to have the spire on the top of the temple be a reservoir, and have tubes of glowing blue whatever come down, as part of a watercoling system. I also thought I'd put a fan blowing out at the top of the temple, undernearth the spire.

But then I started thinking, where am I going to put the back ports? What about the power plug? And the disc drives? So I still have a lot more thinking to do. I also have visions in my head of what the design should look like.
