I found out that my mom bought me a game for Christmas that I didnt ask for and its an expansion to a game I don't have and I cant tell her

Wait till Christmas, open it, sound excited, then go, "Oh wait... this is an expansion to a game I don't have..." Your mom will probably ask what that means, tell her, then she'll probably suggest returning it (since it won't work). Return, get the game you want, and you're done.

Then say, "Oh... this is the expansion pack... I can't play it without the original... I really appreciate the the thought, but I can't play it... :(." Then, she'll be happy that you thanked her, and then say, "Should we just return it and get the original?" Then, hopefully she says yes, give her a big hug, and you're good to go.

That happened to me with Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 Yuris Revenge. But I got the original so afterwards. ;)

I second the "open it, act surprised, say it doesn't work" plan.

This has never happened to me. I am so specific with my lists I give model numbers, alternate versions, website links to order it, pricing ranges, list of stores that might sell it, etc. My folks laugh at me every year for how detailed my list is.
