Hi guys :) Ive lurked here for a lil while and im totally impressed by the qual of thr mods here :)
ive just posted my last finished case "HPRes II" over in the project galleries.
This is HP Res III Mega, im trying to take what i did with HPR2 a few steps further.
most of the mods on this case will revolve around bondo work to the case.
once again the whole job will be finished in 2pack auto and have my signature side mounted water tank/s :)
I'm still not 100% on what the end outcome will be or how soon i can finish this mod, but will be fun to share it here with you guys :)

Excellent - this to me is modding - getting great and imaginative ideas to fruition...........just don't know where you find the time.
Keeping it coming as the final result looked awesome...............

very nice. only question i have is, "how are you gonna access the drives." guess im just gonna have to stay tuned.
see up the top in the first pic... how its a door...
he just extended that up to be full size, instead of 1 bay to short.

thanx guys :) a bit more work done, this time to the MB side panel,
again HPR3 will have a side mounted res, the side pansl is modded to suit the theme :)
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/SIDE%20PANEL%202/IMG_1816.jpg
I've cut some strip of plex these can be bent to shape for the edges.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/SIDE%20PANEL%202/IMG_1818.jpg
using a bit of heat the strips of plex bend to shap with little effort.

not too hard.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/SIDE%20PANEL%202/IMG_1828.jpg
ive decided to "groove" tenches around the walls, this will give a lower area for the bondo to bite down and sand back level.

same with the back
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/SIDE%20PANEL%202/IMG_1839.jpg
next is to sit the side walls back in and use some hot glue to hold it all in place.

i didnt prep clean proper...... a few holes to act as "anchor points" will fix that.

That's pretty sharp looking. Is that internal bezel in the blow hole going to be flat like that or are you going to give it some shape? Maybe a simple ogee profile or something to give it some character? Of course, that would mean more Bondo work. ;)

cheers guys, the front bezel sits off the mesh and allows air flow around the edges,
i did think of giving it an edge!!! very much like the side res panel and the mega hole itself.
ive started on a second and 3 peice already, the options so far are to keep it flat have writing or a logo laser cut into it so it backlights thru the lettering,
as you said have a raised lip around the edge of the insert. or to have it sightly convexed with a rounded shape to it.
the front pansl also had to hold a back light and more than likley a power buttom of some sort.

I love those two horizontal accent pieces you used too, just above the megablow hole... they really add to the curved aspect of the front of the case.
Its the small details which make the big picture!

Wow, that is looking fantastic. I am looking forward to seeing this.
Have you thought about putting a bubbler in the front of the mega blowhole because the blue light diffused through bubbles would be awesome. All I'm thinking is two peices of thin 3mm perspex, sealed with water inside and a small air pump set up. You could even put some of that uv reactive solution into the water for extra glowy goodness, you could even set it up so that you can turn off the blue lighting and have a 'stealth' black light so that just the water glows. Maybe a bit ambitious, but I'm sure that you could do it. :)
shoosh! that was gonna be part of my cryogen mod! sept i dont have the money :(

it looks pretty cool. i wonder how much the mesh and that extra oval plate in front of the fans will restrict the airflow. or maybe im just too picky about restrictive blowholes? :D
Defyant
06-09-2005, 06:33 PM
it will restrict a bit, but the dual blow hole only serves the purpose to deliver enuf air to supply one rear mounted 120bix!, even with the middle plate it will still supply enuf air to do that
theres still the side panel to be done :D
Defyant
06-15-2005, 08:39 AM
Didn't want to run the old metal back plate, so i thought i'd try something different. :D
Stepping out to my favorite shop, i picked up a cut peice of 8mm thick clear plex!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2724.jpg
A qik test to see it fits right, all the motherboard points and needed holes, mounts etc will be added later.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2722.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2710.jpg
The plex panel it self isn't the actual mod! but the idea to diffuse and light it is!
the idea came to me while doing the front light diffusers, its just going to be on a much larger scale.
A qik test on a small peice of off-cut confirms the idea will work.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2713.jpg
next is to sand the peice of plex with 1200 wet and dry, the small scratched catch the light beem and allow the whole flat surface to light, rather then just letting the light travel thru to the ends like on Hevy plex SLB mod i did for Zak.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2718.jpg
Adding some light.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2716.jpg
Once i could see that the effect was goin to work it was time to peel off the protective paper and get to work on my motherboard back panel.
Simple wetrub in the laundry sink again with 1200 W/D and a 3M rubber hand block, all of 15 mins work and is done to both sides to achive an almost frosted look.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2726.jpg
The end result.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2731.jpg
Next is to hook up some lights for testing.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Motherboard%20back%20panel/IMG_2732.jpg
turn off the lights and see if it works!

Couple questions, what are the LED's in and how did you attach that to the plexi?
Looks like a set of Lazer LED's, i'm assuming that mounting is temporary though, as the lights will need to be inside the case.
Defyant
06-17-2005, 11:53 AM
yer thats it guys just a old set of lazer's in a temp placing to test.
i do use a slip on type as well, Defyant style flex light leeds, like on HP1 and a diff setup i used on my sons MOD Hevy plex SLB.

Thanks Defyant, nice little project there. Also neat how you used the headphone type jacks and how you made them. One last question, do you take pictures of everything? It's great to have all those pictures, especially for nubs like myself, but I think you spend as much time taking pictures as you do modding. Thanks for taking the time to answer questions way beyond what I was expecting to get.

your welcoome mate :)
Seriously the taking of the pics is nothing, if your setup! it's usally a qik hit hit the cam button wich is already set on a tripod.
The real time as most modders know is in the picture selection cropping and posting to sites.... compare this to the time actually spent modding and you know your doing this for the love! and not the loss of social and family time :)
Hahaha, with the quality of the mods you're dishing out defyant, i think its obvious that no time is being 'wasted' with the camera... The class of your mods deserves as much attention as it can get... :D Which is a lot.

The idea is that the skelleton will sit on top of the case, with some heat will also take the shape and "mould" to the top. a ruff sand for now, but will have a proper wetrub and clean up over the weekend.
but i think you can see the potential of this idea.
The pattern is marked out on a peice of 6mm thick plex.

You can see here how the skel will sit on the top of the case, with some heat it will mould to the shape of the top panel.....

After a qik sand,
this is very very ruff, and the final result will look a lot better shaped and just have a full frosted look.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/TOP%20PANEL%202/IMG_3351.jpg
Add some lights.
ATM the ligting is not very even..... this is becasue the skel hasnt been properly sanded, with proper placed lights and full sanding "diffusing"
the light will have a much better even glow.

Hey guys ,Nice to get back into this mod.
while i was waiting for some parts to arrive for H-1 i'd get a bit of work done on hpr3.
As much as i liked the first fan box, it was drifting away from the internal theme i was going for.
I decided to make the Fan box again!and this time keep it plex rather than bondoing over it.

soz guys ...got cought off guard with over 800k hits last month :(
Ahaha....that looks sick....what gave you that idea?
ive been playing with new plex lighting techniques and ideas for a while now..
im very big on not actually using "lights" to feature the insides of cases but rather using "light features" to highlight the insides of modded cases.....
i think wer'e all pretty much past the point of just putting a light inside a case as a modding idea.
this is just the internal idea being used on the outside...much like the custom crafted plex strips on the fron , just on a grander scale :)
I like your work. This is my kind of work. Great job. Question,... the top piece you made. You are going to heat it and form it so that it contours with the top of the case right? Tell me you are? I would love to see that and I'm sure everyone else would too.
Tribal cheers mate , i feel the same way about your work too mate.
its my fav worklog in all the forums atm and its a mod i can really relate too.
sorry to say....im actually scrapping the top mod...
the idea was to "heat" it to shape over the top... i feel its great idea! and a sexy looking mod....but it's not for HPRES3... i will add a light feature to the top of the case...it just wont be that.
i was thinking of moulding it over the face of another mod im owrking on atm.... sorta "ala" alien effect.
Looks fantastic so far--Hopefully you can answer some questions from the members about this mod--I'm seeing this thread on a lot of forums, just wondering ;)

Defyant style "Frost tubes"
The next idea was just a "twist" in the defyant style flex leads, and will also have its own light source for a glowy effect and is integrated
with the RCA type power plugs.
the fan box is modded to fit a female RCA and wired to the 2 x 120mm front mega blowhole fans.

once the plex tube is bent the sand is emptied and your wires are passed thru.

thanx guys :)
i hope this next post give you guys a proper idea of the full effect im after in this mod.
you all seen the mock up and the type oflight effect im after.. but i need to fit the lights in a permanat way but in away that i caan replace one if needed,
here what i came up with for the back panel.
I decided the best way was to groove a channel, with deeper holes @ 5 x intervals to fit the LEDs into. the back plate is an incredible 10mm thick! so a 6mm groove
was no probs and still left enud strenght in the plex.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5321.jpg
the full channel, this was first pass the end channel is almost 10mm deep.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5322.jpg
small tunnels are drilled for the LEDs to be placed into.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5325.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5333.jpg
a qik test to see how the light was goin to travel.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5331.jpg
this was an early shot but shows how the wire will fit into the channel.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5339.jpg
a more final shot...shows how the wire loom will feed thru the base of the pc
the blue/White wires are for the 3 x 5000mcd 5mm LEDs and the red/white wire will be for the 2 x 10,000mCd RED Leds!!!!! :)

the effect is more than i'd hoped for.... and when finished should look a real treat.
here is the 3 x blue LED's with 2 LEDs also mounted in the floor and one single one lighting up the front fan box.
the HDD is lit only using the back pansl lightes!!!!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5407.jpg
the floor will also be a main internal feature, and a groove has been cut out in the shape of the MPC350 pump wich will sit down into the plex.

This shot shows how effectivly the light travels
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Lite%20Moods/IMG_5415.jpg
Now it was time to fire up the 3 10kmcd RED LEDs
you can see just how well this way of lighting works as a feature....and you can see the "bleeding " effect as the red light hits the blue!

as you seen in these shots a combo of both!!!

Defyant style frosted plex HDD light.
I decided to scratch the the top panel mod... i like the mod!! it looked sexy..but for me, the mod was just too overpowering
and overshadowed what i wanted to be the main feature of hpr3mega...
i decided to still make a feature... and thinking that i still needed a HDD signal light i'd try somthing that i thought would be sleek stylish and suit this mod better.
the top panel of HPs come apart into 2 sections, the panel that pops out has a nice round edge with a sunken middle..i decided to use this part to install the new custom
HDD light.
first off was some crude marking
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/TOP%20LIGHT/IMG_5537.jpg
close eunf was good enuf as the new plex light could be made to fit the shape.

using some thin sheet plex and scissors cut out a template

some some channel edging is done to allow a section of the plex to raise up thu the hole and sit even with the top of the panel..

MEGA RES
You all knew HPR3-MEGA was going to have a "MEGA" res! but what no one was to know was the external effect of this res was to be.
the back custom back board lighting effect was not only to provide light internally but externally as well!!
The board gives off more light then id ever expected.. and is truly an amazing effect to see in RL.. and will also provide light for the MEGA RES Feature!
First off was to finish building HPR3's Mega-Resthis is is HUGE..and it had to be :P @ 400mm long and 80mm accross the RES is going to be a main feature.
i opted this time for full 10mm thick tops and bottems as these would also act the the main and only anchor points for the MEGA res.
the partially built res.

Top peice and 1/2" fittings
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MEGA%20RES/IMG_5798.jpg
the HEX head bolts that will secure the res to the motherboard back wall.
using a "thing-a-majig" to find dead centre of the circle, these things are great.

the innner thread on the bsb gas type fittings is 12mm spot on. an 11.5mm drill is used for the holes.

A good clean thread is important a perfect seal is a must.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MEGA%20RES/IMG_5820.jpg
Next is to drill and thread the top and bottem of the MEGA res
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MEGA%20RES/IMG_5824.jpg
Next drill and counter sink the motherboard back panel. This will allow the HEX head bolt to sit down flush and avoid touching the MB..also looks spiffy too!

Defyant,... I have been thinking. There's one thing that concerns me about the reservoir. You only have those two bolts holding the reservoir to the mobo tray. I REALLY think you should make some other means of supporting it. If you were to knock into it or pick it up or put it down wrong,... those bolts will either crack your beautiful reservoir or crack your gorgeous mobo tray. It wont take much to break either because of how you have it mounted. It is nice as hell though, again great job. Just dont want you to have an "Oh, ****!" moment down the road. Peace.

Mr. Defyant,... a stupid question. What are the tubes inside the reservoir for? Mixing? So the outlet doesn't pull the coolant right from the inlet? That is the only reason I can think of. Thanks.

Cool looks was the original intention :)..i just thought the reses i made looked bland....later i learnt that it helps with bubbles caused thru turbulance...
spent alot of time watching the way these things work, and some of these pumps really push water hard!
All Res makers now seem to use some sort of "partitition" of feeder tubes.
Speeking of water!!!!
Now that ive decided to run a P4 sys in HPR3M, i can start sorting out the rest of internal modding.
Before i could move on tho, i need to sort out what waterblock i'll use..... i had an only DD-TDX laying around from an old AMD sys, unfortunatly..the mounting holes aren't correct....rather than bodge up an adaptor plate i decided to make a whole new top.
I call it the "The Frog TDX".
Your all know the familiar TDX block, this is the one i used awhile back and had had a custom made green persped top.

The bracket i'll use to mark the "intel" mount holes, this will also act as a guide for the general shape.

With that out of way i really start to make some proggy....
You all knew that HPR3 was going to have a motherboard cover :) just like HP2 and Heveyplex SLB i wanted to carry the tradition into this mod as well.
But knew i had to come up with something new....something or an idea that hasnt been seen before.
The hole internal frosted plex theme was goin to be the biggest bonus for this next mod and would allow me to do something that was a little more "out-there"
Of course the material of choice is plex!! a pretty much freehand pattern is cut using the good o'l jigsaw....

ive never worked with plexi and was wondering, how do you bend it?
tribaloverkill
08-28-2005, 07:53 PM
You have to heat it up. To little heat will make it not bend as easy and to much will create bubbles. You also need some sort of jig or method to bend it. You just cant throw it over the knee and ebdn. #1 its hot. #2 you have to hold it there until it cools down. #3 It's hot.

Anyone who doesn't have the magazine should pick it up, especially newbs to the mod circuit like myself. It has great articles on the basics of watercooling, jsut about every part of a computer (processors, mobos, PSUs, RAM, etc, etc, etc) and lots of other good info.
Anyway, mad props. The mobo cover turned out great!

Better post this update while im here :)
The original plan for the CDROM was to simply cut a slot for a pioneer slot loading cdrom........ but after using that idea on H-1 i decided to scrap that it and go with something that was a bit more challenging and suited the rest of the mod more.
A pioneer DVR-109bk was chosen for the mod. It has a "thinner" type tray and is shorter in overall lenght.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_6768.jpg
The tray is measured @ around 12mm so 14mm thick plex will be needed to make the new front.

A "thingamajig" is used to get the shape of HPR3's facia then transfered onto a peice of 14mm thick plex..this is then "ruff cut" using a jigsaw.

thanx dgmkr :) the end result with the matching 2 lower lights will have a distinct look.
i really needed to get on with finsihing off the rest of the lighting for HPR3...as will all the lighting so far its been double the effort...for every blue LED i install i have to install a red one as well... all up so far a whopping 20 RED and Blue LED's go to make HPR3's internal lighting.
Power is added to the front CDrom and HDD cage.
a molex is depinned, a hole cut and fitted back into the unit..this will supply power for the front of the case.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/HDD%20BOX/IMG_6849.jpg
The original idea was to add some old intel slot type heatsinks to the side of the HDD to help cool.... i scrapped this idea and went with a cutom drilled
plex bracket mod instead.
2 peices of polished cut to size 10mmthick strips of plex are drilled.
Then re-drilled to add a stepped type counter sunk channel to both the brackets.

This allows the HDD screws to fit all the way down the tunnels.
These will act as "risers" and lift the HDD above the clear 80mm fan that will be mounted in the bottom of the box.

Thanx guys :)
to compliment the front and side, i decided to make a bit of a feature of the floor as well :)
The original idea for the pump power was to run a bent frosted plex wire cover to the rear of the case.
I recently had an idea for "channeled " look ..... so this was a good time to try it out :)
The idea is that the power wires for the pump will still be fed thru a frosted plex tubing ...but a channel is cut in the PLEX FLOOR
to allow the tube to sit lower down , more flush and give a cleaner stealthier type look.
a large hole was drilled in the metal floor @ a diagonal angle to the pump, the hole is cut larger so it would also fit the "Motherboard" light wires that will also be fed thru @ a later time .
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/PUMP%20CHANNEL/IMG_7305.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/PUMP%20CHANNEL/IMG_7306.jpg
Some "pre-bent" frosted plex tube is layed in for a check.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/PUMP%20CHANNEL/IMG_7307.jpg
the tube sits down i the channel.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/PUMP%20CHANNEL/IMG_7308.jpg
The plex floor is placed back into the case and the pump and its new wire cover are put into place.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/PUMP%20CHANNEL/IMG_7323.jpg

Motherboard lights Take 2!
The first attempt i had @ this solution was bulky and awkward looking.
as seen below.... these black leads were never goint to suit this mod....
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20CAGE/IMG_6898.jpg
In an attempt to streemline and make the detachable dual lights more eye pleasing i came up with this.
the method of making the Dual lights was the same as before but this time ive shortened the shank of the silde on light to help streamline,
also added "white" wires to help keep a cleaner more "intheme" look.
The cover with the slot type groove that slides over the edge of the motherboard cover.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20CAGE/IMG_7226.jpg
The legs are bent closer to the LED this time.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20LIGHTS/IMG_7225.jpg
White wire which is then covered in Clear heatshrink is soldered on

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20LIGHTS/IMG_7229.jpg
The step down resistor is then soldered to the end...this takes the "bulk" out of the loom.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20LIGHTS/IMG_7278.jpg
A qick check of the plex cover shows that it can be shortened soome more!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20LIGHTS/IMG_7282.jpg
after some more filing and a qik "frosting" the cover is ready and slipped over the LED's...a dob of HOT glue us used to hlod it in place.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/MOTHERBOARD%20LIGHTS/IMG_7285.jpg
Some Clear heatshrink is slipped over and shrunk down to complete the look and the whole loom is also covered with clear heatshrink.

Ever think of building/hooking up some sort of lighting control circuits?
You could get some weird & cool effects going.
Something like the LM3916 could make cool effects
Yu even go a cheaper rough by uses some 555's (556 for duel package) to control the skew rate from a 555 running as an oscillator.

Caboose, i think a frosted case could have an awsome effect!!!...i think some of the newer cases tho arn't tru acryl? so not sure how sounding thm goes?
This is the continuation of the front panel idea. i had originaly made 3 light fins the top one will act as the door for the cdrom.
These were all made from 10mm thick plex cut then hand shaped.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_6791.jpg
The problem was, the top one bearly covered the cdrom hole.
Was time to craft a bigger unit !!!
This is a massive chunck of plex! @ near 20mm x 20mm this was not easy to bend into shape 5 mins of solid hot air gun had it like rubber.
It was then lay'd over the from of HP3's front and left to cool down and go hard again.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_0975.jpg
Clamping the plex to the bench and using the dremal to knock the corners off.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_0994.jpg
40 minutes of hand sanding and the new door is taking shape.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1009.jpg
and its back for some more hand sanding
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1030.jpg
after another 20 minutes the peice is almost at the right shape.
some work is done to the matching middle strip
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1032.jpg
and the 3 peices wrk from large to small ...the larger veing the cdrom door the smaller 2 being for balance and athestics.

the thicker top plex contour will have to attach to the cdcrom door , for this a custom extension block is needed.
the block will act as the spacer between the new cdrom door and the cdrom tray itself.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1036.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1038.jpg
The block is shaped to suit the conture of the new plex door
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1040.jpg
and a qick mock up is done to see all is goin to plan.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1045.jpg
As seen above the new cdrom door has now been sanded with finer gritt paper and has a smooth frost look.
The spacer block is to be left clear and not frosted, holes are added to help lighten the load and to add some asthectics.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1048.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1049.jpg
This new unit is not to be attached to the cdrom tray to become one.
Holes are drilled in the tray
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/CDROM/IMG_1050.jpg
matching holes are also drilled into the connecting block

Threaded using a 5/32 fine tap

Ive had plenty of time to think this next mod out!
I was gazumped!!! as what to do about an ON/OFF button for this mod....To have added a button no matter how cool or what shape i felt would spoil the look of the front facia,
I toyed for weeks about possibly going "remote"! but still wanted a "hard" option.
In the end the answer had been staring me in the face "ia" the whole time!
all i needed to do was mod one of the front light accents! :)
Since the top on was the CDROM door! it would have to be the second or third (lower) light feature i would mod.
I decided the second was the one :)

The idea is that you will "PRESS" the while light feature and it will turn the PC on and off.
For a mod like this to work, it will have to be spring loaded , Srings?....Nps :)
Pend springs will have just the right amount of "spring" for the job.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0460.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0467.jpg
The springs will have to sit flush on the front panel! so it will have to the the plex light feature that is drilled.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0469.jpg
The hole is drilled just deep enuf to allow the spring to fully compress inside its hole.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0470.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0471.jpg
The Unit will now need a locking device, for this ive decided to use cleat plex screws!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0472.jpg
For screws to work i'll ned to drill a deeper smaller hole where the spring hole is now
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0473.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0474.jpg

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0483.jpg
the new unit can now be sat on for a test
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Front%20ATX%20button%20mod/DSCF0488.jpg

This was one of the first mods I spotted on here, and it is absolutely stunning. Fantastic work Defyant and HP-4 is in a league of its own as well. You are truly a master of plex. The mobo covers on your mods are fantastic and really make your cases stand out. I would really like to try one on my current work in progress. Any thing special I should take into consideration? I plan to go liquid cooled.

It might be too late for this, but have you considered frosting the LEDs themselves? It might distribute the light better across the plex, but if you're happy with the light distribution, that's cool.

As always thanx for the great replys guys :)
This motherboard cover is prolly the most "exotic" ive done yet, and was pretty much done "touch and go" the basics were to make sure it fitted over the MB and the rest was cut, bend and see. I was lucky to have got it spot-on first go! but for an "organic" look it's the best way to go about it.
All the other covers have been first done using a pre-made template, something thats thin clear and the vital parts can be traced then then cut and transfered onto the end solid cover. It makes it feel like your doing the same mod twice but is worth the effort.
For Flame'd (HP-4) i cheeted! because the actual cover was clear plex to start with , i just needed to hold it over the baord mark the vital parts and cut. The back of the clear plex can then be painted any colour thats fits i with your theme and i think this is the best way to go about it.
I use posts made of stacked brass standoffs! and always make sure theres at least 1-2 cm's clearance from the vital parts...
Water cooling takes car of heat transfer! so the vital heat parts are not as heat strained as with normal air cooled rigs. A small fan can always be added for some active northbride cooling.

Now that the freshly painted panels have had a day to "set" I was eager to see how the front clear Plex Blades were going to look on the pearl!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3484.jpg
I have to say i was tragically dissapointed! my 5star flag ship had turned into a "titanic"..... the plex blades really offered nothing... just looked like fat glowing blue sausages... while the idea was ok early in the build.... now that the panels were coated these offered no contrast against the class of the Pearl Paint.
I pretty much went to bed an unhappy camper. At about 1am (as it usually is with me) the idea came to me in the form of the good o'l Defyant mouse mats!
Remember these? :D
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/Mouse%20mat%20v2/DSC01855.jpg
It was streight to the plex shop bright and bleery eyed @ 7am this morn for some cut to size plex goodness!!!
I was back by 8AM armed with the new FRONT and SIDE BLADES! As you can see the new blades will be a GLOSS black a 3 layer design with a clear plex middle layer thats will light with the 3 colours of the case!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3329.jpg
The THICKER of the 2 is 2 x 8mm black strips and one 2mm middle clear the longer side blades are 4mm and 2mm clear.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3336.jpg
First thing to do is cut what will be the new CDROM door! Using a "thingamajig" the shape of the front panel is copied to the plex.

Still looking a bit bulky atm!
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3346.jpg
So it's down to the router for some intial shaping.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3348.jpg
Now the long task of hand sanding begins! this goes thru a stack of steps! the first being a ruff sand with 100 grit dry then 400 grit.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3354.jpg
Then it's over some 3 lots of wet rubbing! first 400 wet and dry then 800 with 1500 for fine finsihing.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_3360.jpg
Finally to bring back some of that Gloss black shine some hand compound rubbing.

Thanx once again guys :) theres always room for improvement :) even mow i'm still improving old mods in small ways!
As i learn somthting new or a better way of doing a mod i'll go back and update all my older mods. HP2 is a classic example :)
Continuing on from the last post is the the Top activity light! this really was a pain in the ass to work ou in the end!
i wanted this top light to flash with HDD activity....Proving almost impossible without advanced electronics (which is like a diff language to me)
i decided to cheet! and use the Same idea that i had used in the "STORM'D mod!
The easy way was to use EL wire! and a "sound sensitive power supply" the sound pickup box can be sat right behind the HDD and pick on on the noise made when the HDD is in use and flash!
Of course! to work in with the rest of the mod.... Blue and Red lighting is needed.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Activity%20light/IMG_4049.jpg
The sound box! the mic will sit right behind the HDD! and can have it's sensativity adjusted for best light effect.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Activity%20light/IMG_4052.jpg
The HDD and CDROM bay.
The sound box will be sat @ the rear and the HDD placed in front as shown.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Activity%20light/IMG_4060.jpg
Next is to run the EL wire thru its new home.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/Activity%20light/IMG_3511.jpg
Temp tape is used and hot glue is applied and the tape later removed.

The excess EL wire is cut off and the next task is to wire it into the exsisting wiring.

The exsisting wiring? Hardly! time to make a start :P the nervous system will run in the base of HP3! this is where the bulk of cons and switches will run.
First thing to do is to add the light switches, these will control the RED,BLUE,and 3rd colour.

Heres what i came up with for the inclusion of a CROM eject button. The obviouse choice is to use the lowest front light blade.
Its a simple spring loaded keyed sliding cylinder design.......
The mats needed.

Simple slide design

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3673.jpg
What will be the inner cylinder is keyed and the outer is slotted.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3676.jpg
The inner keyed cylinder is plex glued to the Front blade.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3681.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3682.jpg
For the assemble to lock together a clear nut is placed inside the keyed part.

To hold the locking nut into positon and to stop it sliding back out a smaller holed rod is pressed fitted and glued.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3705.jpg
The over hang will be trimmed away to sit flush.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3706.jpg
Next it to make the outer "keyed" cylinder.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3732.jpg
This outer cylinder will house the Spring, so it needs to be plugged and glued.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3716.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3719.jpg
The spring can now sit inside of the outer cylinder
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3722.jpg
Using the long clear screw the assembly can be screwed togther.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3724.jpg
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3752.jpg

The CDROM switch mechanism needs to connect to a switch! i chose a micro switch, similar to the one CDROMS use!
The joining switch connector needs to be a disconect-able from the main mech, Again using clear tube heres what i came up with.

A simple soloution is used to connet to the CDROM
Hard to see.. but a paper clip is cut into 2 small pins.
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3772.jpg
With the base of the cdrom removed to the cut pins are tinned and soldered directly to the eject pins on the board

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3774.jpg
The idea of this method rather than direct soldering is that i now can have a "removable" option .. much like on your motherboard.

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/REMOTE%20EJECT/IMG_3777.jpg
the best can be secured again and the unit flipped over. The 2 connecting pins stick neatly out from the cdrom and can be easily connected to.

Rank's right guys!
HP Resurrection 3....HPRIII....HPRES III MEGA
the whole series went as follow,
The first HP was
HP Resurrection ... It was then rebuilt into HPRES Stealth'D
Then HP Resurrection II .. that was the purple one! HPR2 was orignally an air cooled pc. I then decided to ADD the Defyant Style Dual full lenght side tanks and some sexy water ..The PC became HP Resurrection II -Evolution. or HPR2-EVO... confused?
After that came HP Resurrection III HPR3 (this mod)..... as you all know this mod started life as Bondo guide for another forum.
The guide wich essentually was just the front panel was called.
Defyant's MEGA Blowhole and Bondo guide.... and indeed it was!
The mega came just from the enormous front dual blow hole but i decided to carry that one theme thru the whole mod.....
Mega plex....mega blow hole.... mega side tank! and mega paint :)
After HP3 MEGA came
HP4- Flame'D thats the silver case with the flamed side panel and Defyant style NO2 RES.
HP-SERVER is essentually HP5. ( the back one)
Watch out for HP-6 MAX !.... i havnt run outa ideas yet :)

HP3's new side blades posed a pretty big problem... ! these could not be passivly lit! an active solution would now have to be used.
The original idea was to light the blades using LED's... but these just could not give an even light along the whole blade.
To just leave them "unlit" after all this work just did'nt seem fitting for mods that taken almost a yr to do now!

http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/defyant/HPResurrection%20III%20MEGA/WORKLOG/BLADES%20MK2/IMG_4049.jpg
