Althought it's not free, I use cloneDVD mobile which works flawlessly for ripping DVD's to my Zen. It's not that expensive, and I don't know of any free ones that work as good. But maybe someone else does...

Forgot to mention if you haven't used it, you can convert DVD's to nearly any format with it.

I wrote a guide on this on my blog. Except this is for mpeg4 format for iPods and PSPs.

If you want to take the vob & ifo files off a dvd, DVD Decrypter works wonders. The company has been bought out and the product isn't updated or offered anymore, but it still works just fine.

Head over to doom9.org and they have a tutorial on how to use the software.
Doom9.org would also be able to answer this question more comprehensively. It's a site devoted to digital video and is rather informative.

You can use DVD-Decrypter to extract the VOB files, then use Dr.Divx to convert them to Divx format (AVI), and then append them all back together with easy video joiner or something, as DVD-Decrypter usually extracts a movie in pieces.

...by the way, does anyone know which settings are "optimal" for making 700 MB rips with Dr.Divx or DVD-Decrypter, or is there a program out there that is better than both. This could be useful.

Heh, fail for 700mb files. I just rip the whole DVD then delete everything that isn't the actaul content, leaving me with one 3gb file or so.

I have 40gb of DVD Rips on my computer, all legal :smoker:
