Because the last one said "October 2006" and that was getting to me.

We can just leave this one date-less.

I'll start (duh)

Omega, you have a thing for anime chicks holding eachother don't you?

Hey its okay, so do I. ;)

You should of titled it "2007 Desktop Thread" or something like that. But it works I guess.

*blip*

Actually the fact that my last two wallpapers have both been anime chicks holding each other has been coincidence. It is no coincidence, however, that my wallpaper is where they are located.

Most of my anime pictures are actually less NSFW than my last two -- and they're mostly NGE or Ah! Megami-Sama.

EDIT: Oh, and SnowFire, If you want, I can give you a few good resources for ecchi-type wallpapers and images in general, PM me if you want 'em.

4chan is only one of the places. /e/, /w/, and /wg/ are all pretty good imageboards for non-blatant pornography and general stuff.

Another place I like is Danbooru. I forget the exact URL, but all I have to do is type in "Danbooru" into the address bar anways.

EDIT: I think I'll change my wallpaper to something less generic though... like Asuna!

The only problem with Danbooru is that it's down daily and sometimes you get 503'd on images. Just wait a few minutes, then the 503's clear up.

I'm running ESX's wallpaper that i havn't put up yet. It's really good, very classy.

Go look in the Wallpapers section in a few minutes to get a copy. ESX, i will love you forever if you make a 2560*1024 version by splitting the text onto the right and leaving the logo where it is...or whatever, you're the designer man. It's doubled on my twin monitors and i really like it.

On another note... l'm so used to my mac that it took me forever to figure out how to get a screen capture in windows lol. Forgot that i had to paste the image in to something like paint.

Its not the boot times that take a while its when i right click to bring up the program menu and whatnot, it takes a while for all of that to load. But like you said its most likely my theme because when i use the default theme it usually runs pretty fast.

ps: If you have a link to that Mac interface could u pm it to me? Don't go out of your way to find it if you don't have it on hand though, thanks :)

I have a link to a patch that lets you use unsigned theme files. Give me a minute and ill get a link up.

Link: Click Me (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=140707)

You might want to do some research on it before you use it. I only used it briefly so I'm not sure if there is any negative side effects. I'm also unsure as to what files it can be used with. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence or not but when i had it installed i had a direct x problem. I uninstalled without really doing any trouble shooting.

As far as free options, the only other free options i personally have come across is shell replacements. They tend to change the functionality of your desktop though and im not sure if that is what you are looking for.

windowblinds is about 20 bucks also cursorxp has a pro version for i think 20 as well i used torrent to get them,

and as for ram and how much they take cursorxp show up on my taskmgr taking about 4000k as for the others not sure i can't seem to find them in it so i'm not sure how much mem it hogs but when i play games like battlefield it doesn't seem to be bad (i've never seen its full potential for myself so my idea of running good could be different from yours but i do have a separate logon that has nothing running so i can have more ram available

I had a trial version of windows blinds, and i must say it did slow down my system, my parents told me to take it off because the system was acting funny. While it was on i couldnt even run halo.

I will say however that its not a powerful PC, I have to run most games on low settings as it is. (Most games meaning halo, which from what i understand doesn't take a powerful computer.)

That being said, if you have a powerful computer, i don't know that windows blinds (or other skinning programs) would really hurt performance, but for me it did.

If i get on the the PC later ill update with the specs on the machine.

WindowsBlinds hurt my computers speed, and I don't have a bad computer by any means (check sig for details)! I could barely render anything in Blender (with Indigo) and IMO, wasn't very good anyways. There are much better skinning programs out there.

With WindowBlinds, you can turn off skinning for any program you select. I had a problem with a selection box being blacked out by the theme. A quick hit to the options fixed that.

Has anyone tried Aston Shell?

Whats this zune desktop theme? Does it run through some sort of skinning application, or is it actually a native theme released by Microsoft. (for free at that?!?!)

It is pretty nice looking, and if it runs natively that means it would probably be the best option, as far as not hogging my system resources goes.

Considering I don't even use the audio application for my onboard (which I am using), I guess that's a fair assumption.

I really don't like my processes to be dawdling around skinning programs in real time, they have better work to do like display dancing banana gifs.

No problem man.

Also, you might look into the Zune Theme themes. That may sound funny, but some people have skinned the theme to have different colors. Want black and purple? They have it. Blue? Yep, it's there.

Here's a link (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/44934523/) to the DA page. I haven't used it myself, but they look very nice.

Edit: are the modded zune skins based on the revised version? I read some where that the first version had some bugs so microsoft put out a second.

I thought they meant the skins were revised from a previous version, but if it was an error on Microsoft, then the version you have is probably the latest so I wouldn't worry about it.

In all honesty, it's very easy to get a cool looking desktop on Linux. Most of my friends here at the CS department here at school just use the default setup that comes with most distributions and leave it at that, maybe because they haven't figured out how to do anything different to it.

I can do that in OS X but i never really use the terminal because i don't know how. I just liked trying to make it pretty. I would usually turn on transparency and anti aliasing. But as i said, i cant use it so i stopped messing with it. I was trying to learn but i never really found a great resource geared towards newbs.

The picture is one my wife took of me when we went to the butterfly house. Funny thing is I remember sitting there thinking as I stared at that butterfly. I must have sat there for 20 minutes. One of the groundspeople came up and asked if I was OK. I asked her what type of butterfly it was, and she said it was an ITHOMIINE butterfly (ftfw!)

Ithomiine is my daughters middle name. The butterfly we named her after just happened to land and chill on my hand that day.

apart from my printer. And my DigiCam. Oh, and my scanner. :pDigicam ought to be ok. It should just show up as removable media, like a flash disk. Failing that, there is an app, gphoto (http://www.gphoto.org/proj/libgphoto2/support.php) which connects to various different cameras. Or, just use a card reader. Cheap as chips these days.
Printer, what is it?
Scanner, you might need to use a file from the windows driver. I can't remember exactly, but it's somewhere in the xsane manuals. Or the ubuntu forums, natch.

I was disappointed with Red Alert 2, it's just lame, and I love the C&C series, but EA just kinda ruined it there... sorry to go OT, but I had to say that, I get pissed off when stupid giant companies ruin games after buying out the company that made them... although, Generals isn't that bad with the expansion, and C&C 3 looks like it's gonna be awesome...

I quite like C&C RA2 plus C&C Tiberian Sun (And Firestorm). I mean, I can play RA2 for hours and hours at a time.

Ah, well, I don't often play through campaigns. I just do skirmishes until I'm hella good (Like playing soviets and getting a nuclear silo within about 5 minutes, and before the hard-mode computer)

xRyokenx
03-27-2007, 11:02 PM
I'll have to try that... but I tend to build for too long and then take out the AIs after they're broke. :D I pretty much modded the first Red Alert to a totally different game... hacked the .ini file to where it was more realistic and fun to play, and tank rushes were pretty much ineffective, and the LR stuff actually shot more than one space longer than the defenses. I had fun doing that too.

xRyokenx
03-28-2007, 10:41 AM
I actually had fun playing it for a while, I played a ton of skirmishes and crap over the LAN, and that's all we would do, it just looks a lot cheesier to me now than it used to, and believe me, I had fun playing it, it just doesn't appeal to me at all now. I still think it should've been an improved version of RA1 though... there weren't (m)any of the same units from before, although it _was_ creative, they could've just made a different game with those ideas, or added them and improved the original. I still play RA1 occasionally too...

...and congrats on the new apartment, hopefully it fits your family better. Speaking of which, I have a pile o' crap in the corner here which needs attending to, after I do my English crap. You know how in class they go over the stories and explain it all? Well, my "tutor" (just the special ed woman) talks to you while you're reading through the story again, and doesn't help at all, just the opposite... man, got way OT here, but stuff's just annoying me today.

New one....

I realized I have like, crap-loads of Quick Launch shortcuts.
So, here's a screen shot, and a short description of the screen.
Please don't pay attention at the wallpaper...

http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o196/45NN2121/00screenshot3.jpg

Over on top, some icons that have their days numbered.

START button: It's the "small icon" version... Classic if I'm not mistaken.
The order of the stuff on the top of the list is because those things, I usually access with they keyboard rather quickly.
Just what works for me. :)

Quick Launch:::
(upper row, left to right, one to eleven)
1 Show Desktop
2 My Computer
3 Opera
4 FireFox
5 TrueCrypt
6 KeyNote
7 NotePad
8 Vim
9 WinAmp
10 VLC Player
11 Nero

(lower row, left to right, twelve to twenty two)
12 Easy CD-DA Extractor
13 AutoCAD
14 MS Office
15 Open Office
16 Business Plan Pro
17 OutLook
18 SyncToy
19 Visual Studio
20 Dev-C++
21 batch
22 Daemon Tools

And... on the right of the task bar...
- Messenger
- Network icons
- Windows' volume speaker thingy
- Asus mobo panel
- Avast
- google desktop
- Realtek audio panel
- nVidia settings

That's it! :)

Please don't pay attention at the wallpaper... But this is a wallpaper thread...

I must say that all those quicklaunchers are a lot better (IMO) than some previous screens we've seen with a myriad shortcuts cluttering them up. I like a clean desktop.

Now, how did that styrofoam taste?

Ooops... forgot that. :)
Google desktop.
I have it in 'docked' mode or something.
I still have mixed feelings about it, as I don't like "stuff" running on my computer without being necessary.
But, to be honest, when I've had to search for stuff, it's helped tons.

But this is a wallpaper thread...

Wow... amazing that you like the quick launchers.
I though they would get a negative review.

All those buttons I commonly use.
To me, they're mighty useful.

As to the styrofoam... LMAO!

I was at a gas station, waiting for... I don't even remember what.

But this dog, I saw him from before beginning operations... to right in the middle of operations... all the way to the ending of operations.

He snatched that piece of styrofoam from a trash bin... and just started working it... and working it... and working it some more.

I was laughing my butt off... he was reeeaallly into it.
I even shot a video of him!

When I most laughed was at the end, when he left this H U G E mess all over the place.
He smiled, and walked away.

AHaAHAHaha!!!

A dog's life. :D :D

Glad you people liked! :)

Reyer did say it was his first attempt....

I like the look, but I do agree it needs a bit of 'tarting'.

Fair play for having a go.

And a suggestion: If you're using XP, you might wanna raise the HALO2 logo up by a few pixels (can't say offhand how many - trial and error usually works), so the taskbar doesn't hide it.

Haven't done much in terragen recently about 2 weeks ago i was creating images in PS and loading them in it worked pretty well, now just to master how to do that, get some textures and ill be good. But before those 2 weeks it was good 3/4 months before i last used it lol.

Soo many programs kills this hard drive, might uninstall some of the Macromedia suite as i don't use Freehand MX or Fireworks that often. But Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Imageready, Dreamweaver and Flash get alot of working. Just realised After Effects is on there and that was only a 30 day trial uninstalled last year, stupid windows lol.

How about making your own?

Get a mahoooosive pic and crop to suit?

Or a not so big one, resize and crop to suit?

I'm running 1440 x 900 now, and got a 1024 x 768 I liked, resized it so it was 1440 wide and cropped the top and bottom off to 900.

Works for me.
