Here is the Microsoft guide to installing the contoller.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906347

Dont let windows auto install the drivers install it from the drivers disk disk. Just unitstall the drivers and install them from the disk you got with it. If you dont have the drivers download them from the link on the Microsoft page. To fix you code 37 do this

Code 37
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Recommended resolution

The driver returned failure from its DriverEntry routine. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

These programs lets you map the buttons on the controller

This program is free for 30 days and cost $19.95 for any longer. But this should do it. http://www.pinnaclegameprofiler.com/

Also you can try DXTWEAK (http://www.wingmanteam.com/latest_software/gadgets.htm#DX%20Tweak%202) which is free.
