hey all, got a question. Is it possible/easy to reposition connectors from say a video card? Here's what I'm thinking, I'll make a simply illustration to help explain:

As you can see, the mother board would not be in contact with an outside surface, and I'm not too keen on the idea of mounting the mother board caddie-corner. So, how difficult woud it be to make a series of mini-extenders to bring the connections from the mother board to the external wall as illustrated? We're talking USB cables, VGA/DVI cables, Fire Wire Cables, PS2 Cables, and sound cables.

USB, Firewire and sound jacks shouldnt be that hard to find, since you can buy extensions of them mostly anywhere. As for the Video and PS2 connections... i dont know. Maybe if you can manage to find extension cables for them, or if you're the hardworker type, get PS2 wires and VGA/DVI cables and mod them to have the right connections at each end.

This might sound a little crazy, but if you have CAT5 cable, you can use it to extend all of those wires. Check http://pinouts.ru/ for diagrams. This does require soldering. I don't know how much time you want to put in to it, but it would work. I used CAT5 once to extend a VGA cable from a PC to a projector, about 30 feet. Or even easier, if you have an old broken monitor, just snip the cable off. You'll still have to solder on new ends though.

I would personally stay away from the cat5 solution for a high end video signal. At 1280x1024 there may not be enough shielding to prevent distortion or snow. Go with the suggestion to snip a cable and put your own end on it. Just don't forget the chokes (that bulgy thing on high quality monitor cables). If you are nervous about soldering you can find custom length cables online.

I will be using custom cables to get all my I/O connections to an outside location in my bubblegum mod. I have just not decided if I am going to make them yet.

The high end cables shouldn't have those, it's the low end cables that need them to stop deconstructive interference...then again, i could be mistaken?

Usually the high end cables have the chokes on them even if they are double or triple shielded. I had to have the sales guys stop buying the cheap cables because although they work fine on the sun systems (very low resolution) they introduce noise into the line and the high end sgi graphic workstations look horrible at 1280x1024x85hz. Pump them up to 120hz and they are unusable. (120hz is used for stereo images) For a short cable you may only need one, not two for your cable.

I know that a couple of cable companies actually build the choke into the connector end and those cables are expensive!

BTW how far are you from Ben Lomand? (I live less than 4 miles from _our_ Ben Lomand and 6mi from Loch Lomand...) Heavy Scottish influence in the Valley I live in...

I've climbed Ben Lomond, it's about 20-25 miles away from my house. Loch Lomond is exactly 24 miles away, and i've cycled to it before.

It's a nice place, spent a night camping there once, but it pissed it down (Scottish expression that needs no explanation i feel) and i ended up sleeping in someone's boat. With their permission, obviously.

Here's a photo of me coming down from the peak of Ben Dorain, which is near Ben Lomond. I don't seem to have any pics from Ben Lomond, but it was Foggy when i climbed it, so they wouldn't be any good either way. That's 3500 feet up, and although it looks nice, it was actually about -2 degrees that day. (Celclius). There's some snow just past that ridge that you can't see.
