View Full Version : I just took some pictures of the moon through my telescope
I need to get a mount to attach my camera to the eyepiece. I also need some more eyepieces of different magnifications. I also need to figure out how to get my telescope to track the moon. It was a bitch to take them because I had to get it lined up in the eyepiece, get it at a distance to focus right, and then focus it right, and set the exposure right. I didn't get any really good ones, and it was too damn cold outside.

Too cool man, toooo cool.
This was the only worthy one

But it's still not sharp enough.
Nice telescope dude! Try taking a pic of mars :D
Nice telescope dude! Try taking a pic of mars :DI need to re-align the telescope. It has a built in database of like 40,000 objects. I aligned it by pointing it at 3 objects in the sky and then it matched them up in it's database. I aligned it and it pointed at the wrong direction for the moon. I should also get an eyepiece with a high magnification to try to get up close pictures of Mars.

yes, we need MORE PICTURES. and higher magnification. actually, if you dont mind, i want to use the moon pictures for a TBCS desktop. ive been looking for a good moon picture for a long time.
Alright. I could try taking some better ones tomorrow. And of course I'll eventually have some much much better ones.
Good work! Looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Absolutely, super cool.
I touched up one of them a little bit in Photoshop and sized it down to 1280x1204.

I'll work on fixing it up some more.
What kind of telescope do you use? Those are some beautiful shots.

yeah what scope you using? I have an ETX-125 w/UHTC. Don't use it much though because of bugs/cold. My friend has a 10in with him at college. He's taken some amazing photos, and has befriended the administrator at Yerkes Observatory near us. Unforutnately they are building a Spa literally around the observatory, the only reason they didn't tear it down was because of its historical significance, even though it will be pretty much useless now.
I posted pictures of the telescope.
that ya did. I couldn't quite make out the number on the side though. Looks like a Celestron Nexstar 4SE?

I feel retarded. Nevermind. I just looked at your first set.
I have only had one astronomy experience. A friend of mine knew of a retired professor that lived about 20 miles outside of my old town and we went out to his place for a weekend. His hobby was astronomy and one clear night he setup 8 different telescopes for us, aimed them at different things and showed us different parts of the solar system. It was an amazing experience.
I want to do it myself, but now I live in a city, don't have the funds and have absolutely no clue what the hell I would be doing. I've done a little research, but there's a lot of info there.
So, a question for you star gazers. What is a good, affordable solution for the novice astronomer and where could information be found about exactly how to use it properly?

actually speaking of astronomy experiences, ive got a good story.
my uncle (unfortunately he died of a massive stroke a few years ago now) had access to quite a few large telescopes. ever heard of the malcolm napp research station? its a big research forest up here thats owned by a university (UBC to be precise). anyways my uncle was into astronomy and physics from what i understood... he was one of those really fringe scientists. so he had access to a telescope in the research forest... a nice big one. he took me up there one time when i was little and i remember looking at jupiter and even seeing some moons.
now, thanks to that, and my mom's ties to the environmental science people, i have "access" to the forest again, and a new telescope. this new one is a mercury telescope. its a polished glass dish that spins with mercury on it to get a perfectly flat surface. its supposed to be very good. i havent checked it out though... its quite the undertaking to get there and i dont have the means to do that yet.
so remember how i said my uncle was pretty fringe? another interesting story about that. when he died... of course we had to go through all his stuff at his house, and what did we find? im damn sure it was a home made radio telescope. there was ham radio equipment hooked to a magnetron from a microwave that was in turn hooked to a large satellite dish on the roof, and all of that was hooked to a computer. there were also test tubes, graduated cylinders, stirring rods, and devices for measuring alcohol content in a green metal box. i now have the test tubes and all the glassware, but some "relatives" from back east (leeches if you ask me... havent heard from them since, and one of them was stabbed to death outside a bar) showed up and completely demolished the place before i could go through and figure out if in fact the radio telescope worked. so now i do all my chemistry in my uncles glass stuff.
every once in a while i start thinking of making a nice big telescope of my own... but that means a lot of precision machining, and i dont have access to the right equipment any more.

Finally, a new wallpaper!
I shoulkd get my dad to pick up a camera arrachment for his telescope before we go stargazing agian. We can get some awesome pictures.
It's a pretty similar telescope, I don't know the name of it, but it's got the whole "motor/database/tracking" thing going on too.

Too bad your not up here in NH the moon has been so bright you can see into the wood at night
Have you tried to look for the ISS (International Space Station)?
Hey now, Massachusetts is right next to New Hampshiere, and I live in a small town of like 2,000 people so there are no lights and the moon is just as bright. But where I should really bring this telescope is to Maine. I remember watching a meteor shower there. You can hear them entering the atmosphere, see vapor trails behind them, and see them light up.
