New to this and Need some Advice. Any would be appricated. I work a great deal of hours..So Im wanting to get into computers...New to this game Ive gone and am having one built for me. And Im wanting to know if its going to be a mean machine or what would be good upgrades for it in the future? its going to have a AMD 4600, a "Gigabyte motherboard",Dual Harddrives with SATA at 3.0ghz, and For the minute 1gig of ram with a CoolerMaster Mystique Case with Blue Led Fans. <Mind you this is all i know Ill have more detailed specs when I have the computer in my possession. The guy says my mobo will handle 16gigs of ram? SO not sure if thats absolutely awesome or what to expect. But Im going to use this for gaming. SO Im pretty stoked. Let me know what you guys think?

...16 GB of RAM? Sorry but I highly doubt that. The most a modern mobo can support is 8 gigs, 2 GB X 4. Even so, that setup would cost around $1000+ in RAM alone. Do you know anything else about the gigabyte motherboard?

No...I know Im paying alot.. But thats what he said "16 gigs of ram"< and thats a quote. Because he was stoked that they dont even support that yet. So? Youve got me.

Ask for the exact name and online links to the motherboard, processor, RAM, SATA hard drives, Audio/Videon Cards and case. Try to get as much information as possible. We can let you know if its good, or if you're getting ripped off.

And I'm sorry I didn't say this before, so Welcome to the Best Case Scenario. :D

UserX do you know this person or is it a computer shop?
Beware that if you have not seen each and every component that they say is going in this system, and have done a little reserch you could end up with a system with sub standard parts!

I have reparied many systems that were bought at these computer shops and I was shocked at how much the person gave for them.

Watch out for "Onboard" video this is where they try to save money.
No rig that I have ever built for myself or for friends has ever had an onboard video card.
Also find out if your getting a generic power supply this too is where they save money.
And it is one of the most important parts for system stability!

If this is what they are putting in save yourself some money and buy a Walmart PC because you will most likely be getting the same thing sometimes even better.

Granted you may have found a good builder just be careful.

Hope this helps

I would get extra RAM if I were you, 1 GB isn't enough in my books.

What you say is not entirely true, this motherboard
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=2302&ProductName=GA-M59SLI-S5
by Gigabyte supports 16Gb of RAM, as do most if not all of the boards with the NF590 chipset. Although unless you are running WinXP-64Bit you'll be restricted to 4Gb anyways.

For a gaming rig I'd have to agree that 1Gb of RAM is just cutting it, I would recommend your first upgrade be increasing to 2Gb. More Spec's on the system would be good for us to advise you better. Try to get the following if you can :

Motherboard: Make / Model Number
RAM: Make / Speed / Latency
PowerSupply: Make / Model
VideoCard: Make / Model

For $1500 you should be getting a pretty kick-ass gaming system, although personally I would have gone for an Intel Core2 based system a 4600+ should crunch almost any game provided your videocard isn't a bottleneck.

Peace!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

(Not very knowledgeable about motherboards but anyway) ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe

XFX PVT71JYPE7 GeForce 7950GT 512MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150199

RAM is not at all my strong my strong point, but if I were you I would hook myself up with a minimum of 2GB, to run games like Battlefield 2 smoothly on full graphic settings you need a minimum of 1.5 GB.

I figured this sound card was good enough:
Audigy 4 SE Sound Card

Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB

THERMALTAKE TR2 500W Power Supply ATX12V

LITE-ON White 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 40X CD-ROM IDE DVD Burner - OEM

I think this roughly is a kick ass gaming system (maybe up the sound card) for about 1050 bucks (not counting RAM and case).

Hope it guided you a bit in what you should expect.

OK update time..I pestered the guy once again. It is a AMD 4600 X2 64Bit, A Gigabyte motherboard (GA-M57SLI-S4) Two Western Digital 120 Harddrives, And the Videocard is something i forgot to ask. But apparently Its supposed to be a good one due to the fact that in a couple weeks im going to bridge two of them together? and Yes I do Plan on getting another gig of ram or two if i can swing it right away. And the Powersupply Is made By Coolermaster. Hes pretty excited about the build and it is a "Computer Shop" so hopefully I dont get screwed because Ive already paid..LOL...Reguardless if its not what I want. I will Put what I want in it. SO. THat being said.. Tell me what you guys think? or

He told me that they dont make them Yet..Thats why hes stoked. He said it would be about 5 times faster than his personal computer which i had the pleasure to see him play battlefield on...and it didnt have any problems...SO that all being said...Im just antzy because Im spending some well earned loot on it.

I think that means you'll never afford 16gb of ram.

Even if it appears your being over charged, as long as it isnt a fortune, it should be allright as i'd expect you to get at least a full years parts and labour warantee. Which is allways nice if you try a daring mod.

Also on another side note, make sure he doesnt stick one of thoes "warantee void if removed" stickers on the side panel. Some companies get you this way. When you open it up and see that they didnt give you what you thought you paid for, they say that the warantee is void because you opened it up. Leaving you a broke and bitter man.

A Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4, 2 Western Digital HardDrives Linked together,A invidia 7600, 1 Gig of HyperX Ram,A cooler Master Mystique Case and a cooler master power supply, A AmD 4600 64 X2, Asus Cd and Dvd Burner, all of the wires sleved and some led fans in the case. < That is the most detailed list that I actually have in my possesion. And when I take delivery of the computer I will have Parts Numbers for All of the parts and I will be opening it up to make Sure that All of the parts are there.

Hmm, AC97 Audio i guess. Lovely. ;)

Not too bad i guess. So what's all the worrying about 16Gigs? The RAM is only Dependant on the width of the address bus. It's not too difficult to increase it in size for extra ram-in fact, i think most motherboards can handle it, it's just that the BIOS isn't configured to suit or something...

2 Western Digital HardDrives Linked together,A invidia 7600

Do you know what size hard drives? When they are linked together it's called RAID (Wikipedia link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID)) It can speed up hard drive access.

A bit surprised he put a 7600 in there. The 7950's are not too much more expensive. Oh, and for future reference the two main graphics companies are Nvidia and ATI. (invidia < funny, that is :p )

7600 256 MB or 512 MB?

FyreKnight
01-03-2007, 09:42 PM
Well no one seems to be answering your question directly :P , so I'll throw in my $0.02. From the list of hardware you've given I'd venture to say that it'll handle quite well nearly any game out there currently, and probably to a spanking good job with most games released any time in the near future.

As I said before, the upgrade I would recommend most would be adding more RAM, in my opinion you'll see more "bang for the buck" with the RAM increase then you will by adding a second 7600 for SLI.

The pricetag might seem a bit inflated to some of us who are accustomed to building our own systems, but for someone fairly new to computers having a system built by an experienced person or company can be far less frustrating, and you seem to be getting a decent system for your money.

Question: Are you getting any of the following ... monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, printer, operating system, additional software or peripheral hardware, warranties etc.?

I don't think you are being "RIPPED", although in the future when you've become more familiar with computers and are more comfortable I would recommend building/upgrading yourself. It will not only save you money, it will also bring a sense of pride that can't be bought in any store. :)

Just my l'il $0.02

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot this in my previous post ... Welcome to TBCS!! I'm SURE you'll like it here, these are some of the best people you'll ever meet online.

Peace

SO Fryeknight your .02cents is worth 1510 bucks!!! and as far as the spelling whatever. The HDs are 120gigs a peice. 4gb ram is excessive. All you need for good gaming is 2.
Get windows XP pro if you can afford it. Better OS.
Spend that extra ram money on a gaming 19" LCD.

I wouldn't suggest watercooling until you've built your own systems for a couple of years. It take some mechanical and technical competence to make a wc system worth installing.

If you need help, don't be shy about asking. We were all new to this once.
