I thought it would be neat to make a case off of one of the coolest games for the original Xbox- Advent: Rising. Here's a few of my inspirations-

http://www.philhuang.com/images/blog/advent_rising.jpg

http://www.armchairempire.com/images/Reviews/XBox/advent-rising/advent-rising-3.jpg

I've already started on the design. For the front, I will have a circular brushed aluminum look (looks good already, just need to clear coat it), orange lighted accessories, some orange and black paint, and the logo on the front. I think it'll turn out good.

lol. That's not too bad of an idea. I could wire it into the PC :p.

I'm gonna get some pictures either today or tomorrow. The finish on the front's going well, just need to clear coat it with either poly or acrylic.

I watched and watched that game from when it was first announced to when it finally came out. It was pretty good. I like the references to Ender's game in the game. Good choice for a mod.

I have a few ideas for the case now. Have the logo on the shiny aluminum in the middle of the front, and etched into the side plexi. Have a cutout of the funky "A" symbol on the top in front of the PSU (for a fan). Make a custom plastic front panel shaped with some bondo and aluminum wiring. Also have my wireless xbox controller to PC mod hidden inside of the PC.

I have the paint colors:

Base coat: Dark Blue
Accents: yellow & orange
Inside: Silver
PSU: blue-black

-Water Cooler (cooler master)
-Duct tape (my bestest friend lol)
-Masking tape
-some special fx lighting
-3 10x12 sheets of plexi
-dremel bits

I'm only getting the basics right now for the case (bondo, paint, primer, masking tape, dremel bits, etc.).

Everything's come to a halt. My older brother decided to come down from Minnesota, so were all here :p. Anyways, I have two kick ass tube speakers from my older works to place inside of the case facing foward (detachable tubes, of course :D). The front will have three holes (two for speakers, one for a fan). The rest Ill post in a sketchup along with it.

EDIT: man, i need some bondo.

progbuddy
01-31-2007, 07:56 AM
I've got the layout for the front. It's gonna have the two speakers to the lower left, and the fan just to the right of the speakers. Man, I need some more reinforced cutting disks :p.

All I can say is, I made 'em, and theyre loud. They also put out good sound quality (they were once Harmon/Kardon, made a mini-amp, popped the tubes on).

Okay. I think you guys will like this one :) .

This is going to be an original shape. The front is going to be curved yet have an angular design with plastic and plexiglass. The tubes are shown:

-Food poisoning-
-Traveling to Florida with food poisoning-
-Going to a wedding two days after food poisoning-

I just need to thing of a neat idea for the yellow plexi to move out of the way for the optical drives to open. I'm thinking a couple of motorized yellow pieces of plexi on the top folding out to reveal the drives.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but I think the slots will do nicely. If not, I could always add perforations later to a couple of panes of plexi. Thanks for the help :).

Okay. So I have most of the sketchup done, and I'll be posting later today al the pics and stuff :D.

EDIT: Here's the pics :D. I added a couple of things to the case. I thought it would be cool to have a glowing green "bullet hole" in the side (plexied in of course; dont want dust :p) and a fan hole in the top. Also, I added a few perforations (only 3) to allow for better airflow (there are already slots in the panes of plexi for air flow, but I thought the holes looked cool), and some nice touches.

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m29/vashthstampede98/current3-1.jpg

Just need to get some of the kinks out of the design (rough edges, things of that sort).
Also, I thought adding a gun of some sort to the outside of the pane of glass (i.e. alien sniper rifle or proto plasma gun).

I've just finished making the tube speakers for the project. I just need some LED lights/80 mm glowing fan ring to place around the tubes. These speakers are frickin awesome, hitting a deafening 3/4 inch displacement--from a 3 inch speaker. Also, I will be making custom plastic holders for the speakers to redirect the bass out of the back of the case, hold the speakers in place, and make it look cool :p. I will be using Smooth-On casting foam 3 for the bass "router". Link (http://www.smooth-on.com/)

and this is where white LEDs are going to go...
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m29/vashthstampede98/DSCN0022.jpg

Hopefully I'll get around to buying that foam stuff to make the custom plastic piece so that the speakers will just slide right in :D. BTW, the foam is going to be covered with Bondo, sanded, and painted gloss black, then hand-glossed.

Oh, the amp is shown to the right of the LED holes.

Haven't had much progress because I've been cleaning the house all day :(.

progbuddy
02-25-2007, 08:49 PM
New ideas:

-Have the bass "routers" wrap around the case to pump from the sides.
-Create a plexiglass liquid chamber and fill it with UV reactive liquid.
- Create a plastic piece to run from the outside of the case directly to the CPU.
-Find UV reactive crystals to place in strategic places throughout the case to give it a nice glow.

progbuddy
02-26-2007, 05:44 PM
Parents said if I make all "A"s and study real hard I could get the hardware in about a month :D.

Also, I'm creating UV reactive crystals for mixing with paint to create a glowing finish to the inside of the case. I've just painted the case blue. Also, I am going to hand-paint the case with clear coat to give it a nice light effect.

UPDATE: Just finished the UV reactive paintjob, and it works like a charm :). Pics posted tomorrow.

Is the blue paint really that shade of blue, or is it just the camera? Cause it looks cool...

Yeah, it really is that color. It took me a while to get the brushstroke effect down. It adds a really nice touch. Here's the secret:

You need-
Glass Stain Paint - Clear
Dark Blue Paint
rag
wide Paintbrush

1-Paint it the blue color, and make sure its completely dry.
2-Pour on some Glass Stain, and brush it on with the wide paintbrush (doesn't matter if its straight or not, just slap it on)
3- take the rag, make it slightly damp, and wipe the rag whichever way you want to (horizontal casts light down and up, Vertical sends it to the sides, curved gives the best finish, but this was just a paint "mockup"; I will make the finish curved to scatter light in all directions until it reaches the logo [as shown in prev. pics]).
4- Let dry until its slightly sticky, then repeat step 3.

The way the glass is positioned, you should think about covering the top of each piece in order to stop dust from getting in.

The way the glass is positioned, you should think about covering the top of each piece in order to stop dust from getting in.

Gonna solve that problem by the fan blowing out hot air from the front. Also, I think I'm gonna have to move to a bigger case. The microATX was kind of a really large challenge, and I might need to move to a full ATX case. I have an ATX case, just need to take all the plasticey crap off and start with the bare bones.

progbuddy

This looks like an awesome card from this mod. Its large on the side, so I'm going to mod the side of the case to allow the passive heatsink part to stick out a bit.

Nothing much has happened lately, but I've got the perfect case. Remeber ye olde Micron? I'm gonna use the frame from the Micron (tall and skinny) and create a beast.

progbuddy
03-18-2007, 08:11 PM
Work is slow (as usual), but I did manage to get some more ideas for the case.

1. Illuminate the "bullet hole" on the side, and have a vent put in there to draw in fresh air for the CPU.
2. Create an external HDD housing to boot windows.
3. Illuminate the speakers with white LEDs.
4. Create a fan base for the PC w/ filters and 3 UV reactive fans.

I'm going to be using 2 different sets of cold cathodes (green and UV).

The mobo is still going to be MicroATX, even though the case is going to be a full tower (speaker space and extra PCI slots for all the CCFL's)

This case is going to be skinnier than the MicroATX one I had, so I'm going to move the fan from beside the speaker outlets in the front to underneath (with the fan base).

See why do peopele still buy cd burners? Like their $20, for an extra $10 you can get a nice DVD Burner. This is why games come in 4 cds instead of 1 dvd disk. You may think its wise "hmm I'll save ten bucks!" but no. Atleast buy a dvd player or a combo drive?

I have a burner of both varieties, at first it was because my CD burner burned CDs crazy-fast, but now it's mainly because the burner of the DVD variety doesn't like burning CDs... that and I like having two drives.

Looks like some good stuff you're getting there Kevin.

Hammers are so much cooler than sledgehammers because-

A. They're not heavy as hell.
B. They smash things with little effort.
C. They have a tendency to become a stress-reliever.
D. They pull out nails.
E. Ichbin is cool :)

You know if you actually feed the wife some decent food, you get the formula for free... :p

**** cost 25$ a can!! and she eats like 2 cans a week!

I think it's racket if you ask me. They have a hold of the short ones on this issue...

I swear when she turns 18 she is buying ME a graduation present. A brand new badazz system!!

Let me know how that board works out, I have been eyeballing it for about a week now. ;)

There's been some work done on the case. I've made UV reactive blood stains on the inside and am still working on the bottom of the case.

BTW, the PC parts are getting here April 16 (monday). Can't wait :)

I don't think I'll be able to get the speakers in with all the stuff, so I'm going for the next best thing- building a housing for the speakers to go in. It will sit on the top, be about 4-5 inches (11-14 cm) tall and the mini amplifier will be built into the housing w/ custom knobs and such. This microATX computer's gonna be a real handful :).

Feel like crap today, so nothing's really gonna get done. I think I have Strep Throat :(.

I've set up the PC, and everything is running like a champ. This thing is a beast :). It's detecting 2 separate cores (unlike the old Pentium D's where the cores were combined) like it should. I LOVE IT!

THRUSH put an end to that after the first two weeks. that **** is NOT fun.

prog - You still have yet to tell me about that board? Anything quirky? is it a good board??

-Jeremy

Board works great. I like the chipset. It comes with HD audio, 10 USB ports, EasyFlash, and it looks cool under the UV. It was fairly cheap when I got it (73.99), but it comes with awesome features. Runs everything smoothly. I think the onboard graphics fly past my GeForce MX 4000.

Wow. I didn't realize the case was steel until now :p.

Tested the two fans in the front. They look and work awesome (it's like a gigantic tornado times two). Pics will be posted later.

Also, I have the plastic piece ready for modding. Now to go buy some bondo :D, some rusty looking paint (gonna make some), and a couple other things.

Now that's what I'm talkin about! Painjob looks pretty cool, do I detect a little influence from Commando's work?

Yeah. I took the carbon fiber effect, and literally turned it upside down. I took the paint that was still on the grip matting, and turned it upside down, placing the paint on a layer of polyurethane (3D effect), then slowly pulling it off. Then I took a new sheet of grip matting, and cut out some flames. Sprayed over with silver paint (made sure it went over the edges), and peeled away. Then afterwards, I did the same, but with the other side of the pattern (and in flat black). Finished it off with a little polyurethane clear coat.

BTW, polyurethane takes forever to finally cure, but when it does, you get a miraculous shine.

You should try to get some clearer shots of the paint job, I'd like to see it closer. Can you change the light source to avoid the glare?

Rusty, angelic, and badass :).

Added some rust (looks a bit orange, will go over with light sandpaper before the final polyurethane coat), and an angelic figure on the side. Also added Seeker blood stains. Enjoy!

Paint is dry. Later this week I will add polyurethane in layers to give a 3-D effect. Also, the front will be sanded slightly in the corners, to further indicate wear. There will be a clear piece with black sides on the front of the case (further explanation will come either tomorrow/the next day).

I'm not sure if he's in Germany or not at the moment as he's going there sometime soon if he's not there already (progbuddy and I live about ten minutes away from each other), but I've seen them firsthand. They work quite well, if I remember correctly, they have pretty good bass too, and you can feel the air moving out of the end when the volume's up a bit higher and there's more bass.

so the idea is just that you get better sound out of a speaker attached to the back of a tube?

Yeah... lol :D

The tube channels the sound waves in such a way that it amplifies them and sends them to a specific point. If a pane of plexiglass were to be placed in a certain angle towards your ear above the tube opening, the sound would pass through the air towards your ear with very little diffusion, creating a vibrant sound.

alphastryk

Also, Anthony is [supposedly] getting me a couple of clear glow-in-the-dark SATA cables for this project for the harddrives. Wanting an 8800GTS 640 MB and some more RAM for my b-day (lots of it is going to be Out-of-Pocket x.x).

Pffft. Kitbashing.

That's what old PS2 parts are for :D.

However, I don't think I will be coming back to the forums due to recent events.

Well dude, I'm sorry you can't learn to get along with other people who may, or may not, agree with you.

The staff have looked into your complaint and decided that there was nothing worth investigating: a throwaway remark here, a comment there, that could be taken as rude if you were looking for problems.

No-one else has complained about the members you singled out; so it really comes down to goodbye, good luck, and if you ever feel like you might be able to manage yourself in a community with different people, different opinions, and different personalities, then welcome back.
