As you maybe guess CF will be a defining element of my mod. Other materials i used (a lot of work is already done so this log will grow very quickly..) are wood ( mostly plywood) and styrene.
Letīs start with some sketches and quick renderings

p.s.: there has to be a good reason for everything. i believe i have a really good one ^^

thats my old rig, my first modded case and no it didīt look that ugly when it was young and fresh...

Cool, can't wait to see the carbon fiber work.

Do you have this project posted somewhere else? I thought I saw it somewhere but I can't remember where.

Gruntville (http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18074&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0). The pictures are straight from a project that "b0b" started in August of 2006. I also noticed that this was posted on Bit-Tech as well. I don't really want to accuse anybody of anything, but this seems a bit fishy, considering that "b0b" has made a lot of progress on this case. So I must ask Derbaum, are you "b0b" and if so why the short post when you have alot of progress to display? If you are not b0b.. shame shame shame..

No prob. Just update the log here and we'll give some props.

It is a wicked project. One long post would be fine to get everyone up to speed.

Your carbon work is phenomenal. Lay it out, man. Lay it out....

I think it's obvious you want a little exposure, having seen this log elsewhere much further along. I'm telling you, This is the place to do it.

I'm not tryin to scare you off. I just would love to see this project here. It's awesome.

Bevore we can start with some Cf-work, we need forms. You can either laminate on a postive or negative form. If you choose the first way, makeing the forms is realytivly easy, but youīll spend a lot of time giving the carbon stuff a real good surface.
I choose method 2 because i think workin with foam and putty is a lot more easy then doing the same with CF.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6235366630653631.jpg

These parts will be the rips on front and top. Every part is unique and just fits on its desired place.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3830653432373830.jpg

This is the biggest part iīll do in Cf . The black circles mark all the parts that i have work on again.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6339386339323231.jpg

Normally you do such modelling with urethane foam, but thatīs very.
expensive. i used cheap styrene foam normally used to keep houses warm.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3063376130643639.jpg

My "tools": a knife ( for basic shaping), sanding paper and a lot of filler. For bigger cuts i used a band saw.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6630383730333762.jpg

on this picture most work is done. i used this filler fo find all bad places on the surface. the dark colour is a great help.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6638323939636330.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3264633237383938.jpg

note to self: drilling in foam is no good idea. itīs not strong enough for a clean cut.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3035626439373730.jpg

the positives are done. i painted them with 2 component paint normaly used for cars.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3663353064646666.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6134656230653163.jpg

thatīs my "new one". i found the case in the garbage. 0 bucks are a good price for a case i think ^^

p.s.: this will be an inverted-atx mod. itīs not turned upside down.

Good to hear, and I hope no offense was taken. At first I thought "Man if this is some guy ripping off another modders work, what an IDIOT to pick such a unique mod!!" :D Now that thats out of the way.. I have been following your mod on Gruntville since August. GREAT work! I really admire how your vision is coming together into reality. Really looking forward to seeing how you pull off the remote control piece. Can't wait to see another update!!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3265646231396262.jpg

this was just a test. i wasnt shure if the paint i used can stand the styrene in the resin. it did ...
after that i could start with the real work. step #1: applying a layer of gelcoat. it gives a smother surface und contains less bubbles then normal resin. dont mention the colour!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3834383533383864.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3863356661326333.jpg

24h later i could start with the gf for the molds.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6365643730626439.jpg

the first layer with clear resin. this helps to avoid bubbles .

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6238653537363733.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6530663361643766.jpg

in the end the molds hat 3-5 layers of gf. thats something around 4-6mm

p.s.: what i used for laminating

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6561666662616464.jpg

resin, curing agent, a normal brush and a teflon roll.

after releasing and cutting the molds look like this!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3364633865346330.jpg

while the clear gelcoat cures lets take a look at the tissue i gonna use.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3838623136336139.jpg

this is "normal" tissue. relativly easy to handle.

and this the one i gonna use

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3033356138633532.jpg

itīs called unidirectional. a lot more expensive ( 4 times ?) and the ugliest thing i had to work with.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3136343762373030.jpg

my first attempt...

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3334353462666264.jpg

didnīt come out that nicely.

so i tried something easy first

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3062333464396534.jpg

the only way to work with this #*!§ is to tape the edges.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3038656563646137.jpg

after discovering this little trick i could start with the real things!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6636393137376239.jpg

gettin bigger !

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3965363139363263.jpg

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3062373337343138.jpg

and bigger ( ~ 50 x 60 cm )

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6230366632616539.jpg

The Cf work is done. You better take an extra look, because you wont see the CF-PARTS for some time.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6161376534316138.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6161376534316138.jpg)

now we´re starting with the inside of the case. step one. we need a new hdd cage. that´s my final version:

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3336316635636639.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3336316635636639.jpg)

materials needed: aluminium bar ( 25x5x1000mm )

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3734303838363161.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3734303838363161.jpg)

and a normal aluminium sheet (3mm).

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6466336438623733.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6466336438623733.jpg)

after sanding is started cutting the sheet

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6333386532653630.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6333386532653630.jpg)

and the bars

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6638363930386533.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6638363930386533.jpg)

ineeded some slits to mount the hdd properly. i tried to drill them out as far as possible.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3463323635356462.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3463323635356462.jpg)

for everything left i took a keyfile. you see some in the picture above. this took hours!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6461643537633538.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6461643537633538.jpg)

to connect the sheet and the bars i used m2 screws.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6463636432663237.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6463636432663237.jpg)

some testing.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3363376639306339.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3363376639306339.jpg)

the sheet at the and isn´t strong enough to handle the torque of the hdd´s. the chromed bars will support.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3939626166343133.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3939626166343133.jpg)

finished!

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3935373166626438.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3935373166626438.jpg)

cutting out this thin parts was tricky because the styrene is really soft.

most parts of the Quick-Release-System will be made of plywood. it´s really strong and a lot lighter then, for example, Styrene.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6664633535623231.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6664633535623231.jpg)

basic idea behind the QRS are this aluminium bars . they will be drilled so you can stick a splint through them that holds the whole front in position

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6234633136383162.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6234633136383162.jpg)

the bottom part of the system. no splints here, just remove the ones on the top. the cover for the top of the case will be mounted in the same way.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3563356437343530.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3563356437343530.jpg)

some more playwood. the big sheets are for the sidepanels, the 2 10mm parts
are used for the spine.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3835323931313031.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3835323931313031.jpg)

next step is to cut the cfk to fit on the spine. it´s not that easy to get some parallel lines on a curved surface.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3733333033316266.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3733333033316266.jpg)

that´s my prototype spine. there will be a slightly more beautyfull version in the end ...

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3263313061303236.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3263313061303236.jpg)

i gonna use this brackets to connect the spine to the rips. the 2 fingers will be glued to the rips , the spine will be attached by screws.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6134613963623932.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6134613963623932.jpg)

some layers of gfk provide that nothing can break off there!

today we start with the remote control. i used a part from an old front.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6566346236386361.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6566346236386361.jpg)

i dont want so many plugs, switches or whatever on the case itself so everything will be controlled from my desk.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3566316635376636.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3566316635376636.jpg)

i did some quick rendering with sketchup for the controlpanel. the 2 gray buttons on the left side will look like this in the final version.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3635616266336164.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3635616266336164.jpg)

the caps gonna cover some buttons. i am not shure wich shape they will have.

the big wheel in the center drives 2 potentiometers, one for the 230v fans , the other is for visualising the movement of poti #1.
it creates a signal for this little circuit

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6564626637306634.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6564626637306634.jpg)

in this picture it´s running in dotmode, the final version will run the barmode but that needs some extra cooling i was quite 2 lazy for.

to light up the side panels i need some kind of pwr connector. normal plugs arent really an option so i had to find another solution. iīll use this copper sheets as connectors. flat sheets will be the counterparts on the panels.

the steel parts of the case are finished, white, glossy. the foam rupper hopefully helps to reduce noise.

If you add the foam to the fans and hdd's like a gasket, it will help with the noise caused by the vibrations.

Sad thing is, I do custom work everyday, only on cars; sound system, mechanics, show quality fiberglass and CF, but what you guys are doing takes the cake and some pies as well. derbaum, excellent work!

as seen on this pic the rips are still 2 big.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3833333531313265.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3833333531313265.jpg)

thats what we ended with in the last update.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6535656564373762.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6535656564373762.jpg)

i did just a rough cut, still wasnt shure about the dimensions.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3062383066633038.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3062383066633038.jpg)

but i looked good so i finished the first layer. in the end there will be 3 of them . 2 times wood and in the middle some plexi glas. ok it´s just clear styrene but it will do the job, too.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6236363666313163.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6236363666313163.jpg)

so next step was to paint the styrene. so no wood or yellowish colour from the plywood can be seen on the edge.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6262666639383232.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6262666639383232.jpg)

this cutout will be filled with a bunch of leds and some resistors
more about the led thing in the next days.

stay tuned ...

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3633656562383938.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3633656562383938.jpg)

first, wanted to put the leds in groups of 4, but that wasnt that beautyful on the edge. so i decided to split them up. some things became quite tight ...

thats just a third of alle cables that need to get through this.

today we head on to the light inside the case.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3630623933336438.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3630623933336438.jpg)

to light the inside up iīll gonna use this LED. this is a 1w lumi-led emitter in daylight white and itīs unbelievable bright. i have to use a led because thereīs not enough space for a cathode.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3730643663623436.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3730643663623436.jpg)

the coppersheet is for cooling the led. uncooled it would melt within seconds.

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3833353236316365.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3833353236316365.jpg)

test set-up. the strange red stuff is old thermalglue. looks ugly . smells ugly, no further details ...

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_3936373635303561.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_3936373635303561.jpg)

the first heatsink was a bit too small (60-70°C), so i made a bigger one and 2 small ones for the resistor. that thing getīs pretty hot , too (90°+).

http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/400_6531663834303066.jpg (http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/51/2108551/1280_6531663834303066.jpg)

Great Job Cutting that out! I'm about to start some cutting of my own.

You use a Dremel or a Jig Saw?

DaveW

in my mind i did. if i posted what i actually thought i would have lost like 15 rep points like i did with the v for vendetta case

If that's the case don't bother posting. give constructive and honest feedback, or there's really not much point in posting anything.

Great Job dude! However I think more pictures would be warranted. This was such a complex project that I'm not sure these last shots tell the whole story. You should try to get a couple more in better light of the whole finished project. I'll move a copy of this to our completed mod gallery now but if you decide to add more pics let me know and I'll tack them on at the end. Thanks for sharing!

need to sleeve some cables, the look of the original ones really sucked!

both cables for the RC done. changed the caps on the sub-d to metalized ones. looks much better.

power and p-ata cables remain unsleeved. they would get much too stiff to hide the rest of it in the "basement". some black pata cables would be cool but i dont know where to buy some in germany.

hopefully i can buy some new hardware in q4 of 07 and the pata stuff is kicked out . psu would go the same way to get some space for one with cable management.
iīve plans for the grafic card 2, but i dont invest time and money in something thatīs probably changed in a few month.
