hehe, i found it amusing that alot of people were trying to hype up Microsoft's zune and its "superior features" and then apple comes out with this. Just an example as to why apple owns the mp3 player market.

Dang, how much are they? They look super pricey...
I wonder if I will have enough if I sell my cell phone (with three batteries), iPod 30GB, and my iPod portable video player.... all of which is not even a month old... hmmm...
Thnx for bringing this up scotty! ...you jerk. lol ;)

Sure it all looks great when it's first announced. Mac Hype 2.0... I'll hold my breath until:
1. They tell us the battery life. Real world estimates, not their inflated ones.
2. Go with a better carrier than Cingular..Jeeze they are notoriously bad
3. The durability. I've dropped my crapply LG phone many times and it still functions like a champ. It connects without fail, makes calls, period. Is iPhone another glossy, smudge-prone plastic face? Oh that looks classy.
4 Security and encryption. What have they implemented?. Having all that personal data on one device is asking for trouble. Is there a way to physically get secure data off of this thing?
5. Did I mention Cingular? WTF?. More hidden fees than any other provider. No customer loyalty or discounts when upgrading.
6. Cingular!!!?? Cingular has the lowest dropped calls of any carrier only because you cant ****ing connect in the first place. Can You Hear Me Now?

I hope to god that it isnt ONLY cingular. I like Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. ...even though verizon is a little bitch sometimes.
The iPod is at max 8GB... thats kind of lame to me.
The smudge factor... Thats something I forgot about till just now. Not that big of a deal though.
Its kind of funny, I was thinking yesterday how cool it would be to have wifi and a phone built into an iPod.
note to self: Crimson doesn't like Cingular.

Good point about the carrier. I don't know much about phone companies but it would be a waste of money to buy this if you cant use it any were. Isn't there a possibility that they may eventually, if the phone becomes more successful, offer other carriers a chance to carry this phone? I know i remember reading that apple was having trouble finding someone to carry it because of the way content can be purchased through Itunes and synced via usb/bluetooth/etc. I guess it was something about the phone companies not making as much money since customers wouldn't have to use airtime in order to download content to their phone. Idk, it was more complicated than that but that seemed to be the gist of it. Carriers see it as a threat to the way they make money off of phones.
As far as security goes... Ive always heard that OS X is supposed to be pretty secure (i should know since i use it, but i don't know how to judge these things.), but i've also heard of people cracking wifi enabled macbooks in minutes. It had something to do with the wifi driver that apple was using.
Over all i think its pretty cool though. My only problem with it is, that i would rather have more room for music. Alot of ppl use more than eight gigs as it is, and once you start adding in these other things (preferences, web browser bookmarks, Calander events, and emails) I can see eight gigs getting filled up pretty fast. Hopefully this touch screen is more durable than the nano screens.
Either way, if i needed a cell phone, and i had the money, I would probably get this, assuming it doesn't completely fail in the market.

3. The durability.
That would be my number 1, ebay is rife with broken iPods and other apple crappola. I'm not anti-apple though, actually pretty pro-apple. I'm anti-apple hype. Don't fall for it guys, the manufacturing quality on the first batch is bound to be piss poor. It always is.

Yeah the tech community has being for a while trying to work out what it is like. What is cool is now we have seen it you know the people who claimed they have inside info are telling the truth or not.
Is it GSM? or your American standard. If it is not I think I might cry as I want one real bad.
Yeah I agree with Dave you would need a cover for it that thing. Or it would die if you dropped it. I drop my phone all the time.

I've dropped my iPod quite a few times from various heights. It has at least one bad dent in the corner but it still works (thank goodness).

Verizon is the only carrier that works in my area, except for a 5'x5' patch in my backyard where we used to be able to get att service. This is the same for most of the San Lorenzo Valley. Several of my friends want that phone and are going to try cingular to see if it works, when it comes available.
Of course they also drink from the foaming yellow nozzle that is apple...

"That’s right: the iPhone’s exclusive carrier will be Cingular. (Nor is the phone “unlocked”; you can’t use it with any other carrier.) At least it’s a quad-band G.S.M. phone, so it will work overseas."

I think I read it won't be available till June. I use Cingular and have no problems around here. I have been with most of the carriers at one point or another, and Cingular has been the only one that I don't loose signal. It's funny alot of my friends have switched to Cingular, because my phone always worked where theirs didnt. T-mobile. -- No signal in my house, have to stand across the street in my neighbors yard to make calls or answer them. Verizon, same except the phone will ring in my house, just if I answer it before I get across the street, I loose the call. I also carry a Sprint phone for work, we house a large portion of their helpdesk so thats who we have our service from. Unfortunately I can't receive calls on my Sprint phone in the office because there is crappy reception, and at home, I can only use it in my kitchen. My Cingular works in my office, at my home, out of town, etc etc. Its probably more geographical, different services are probably stronger in different areas of the country.
I drove from San Diego back here to NE Ohio in June 2006. Not a bit of trouble with Cingular, except the desert.
iPhone(the name) is owned by Cisco and they're suing Apple. Ha! New naming scheme.

Yeah I actually was wondering about that because there is this product. The Linksys (CISCO) iPhone

The iPhone is coming later this year to Europe and early 2008 to Australia.

hahaha, that is funny. I wonder what they are going to do about it?
Probably pay Cisco a ridiculous amount of money for the rights to the name.

Dodgey apparently Cisco said that Apple could use it they just had to sign something and tell them they would have been fine with it. Unless Apple never signed it...
I heard a report this morning that Apple and Cisco were talking about Apple using the iPhone name, but never finalized anything.
