I have access to a laser cutter which would be alot easier and faster to make an etching... would if obtain a good effect for LED lighting in the plexi?

I think Crimson Sky used a laser-etched window in Project Mars city (Doom 3) with great LED effects.
I don't know if you can use a laser cutter to etch, but someone else around here will.

My school has a laser cutter. the nicest and most convient tool ever. you should be able to etch your plexi perfectly fine, but sometimes some types of plexy glass dont work really great because it because it becomes discolored and all charred up. the best stuff ive used is frosted plexy.

Yes, a laser engraver should work to etch acrylic. The only catch is make sure it is actually acrylic, not polycarbonate, PET, etc. Commonly people call any clear plastic "plexiglass" when really plexiglass is a brand name of acrylic (polymethyl methacrylate).
