After almost 2 years trolling around here, I'm finally going to do something of my own. Project USMC. Work will officially begin tonight. My computer is currently housed in the case, so I'll be taking everything out and moving to a temp case. Here's pictures of the case I'll be using.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/DSCF1691.jpg

On top of the case is a Maxtor 80 Gig USB HDD. The shell for this will be painted also. Probably black with red accents. I'm also planning on changing the LED's from green to red.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/DSCF1690-1.jpg

I suck at cable management right now. That will be fixed with this mod.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/DSCF1692.jpg

The design:

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/newdesign2.jpg

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f186/sgtm_usmc/newdesign3.jpg

System specs:
Soyo motherboard with onboard sound (don't remember the model number ATM)
Intel P4 2.66 Ghz socket 478 processor
1 Gb Kingston 333Mhz DDR RAM
internal - 160 Gb Seagate HDD with Windows XP Pro
internal - 40 Gb Maxtor HDD with Windows Vista
external - 80 Gb Maxtor USB HDD. Stores music, pics, docs, apps..
BFI Technologies NVIDIA 5950 Ultra 256 Mb AGP - *need to replace the fans somehow
Sony video capture card/TV Tuner
Linksys 10/100 NIC. The SOYO onboard NIC 5uX0rZ
2 - 80mm red/blue LED fans
1 - 80mm blue LED fan
Speakers - Labtec 2.1 system that I got almost 10 years ago. These things STILL rock the house.
Unknown brand DVD and CD burners. Might only go with 1 Optical drive. The DVD burner does everything I need.

That's about all for now. I'll post up some pics tonight. My oldest daughter (11 yrs) has been begging me to let her build a computer, so I'm going to have her help me transfer this one to it's new case. Comments, questions, suggestions, and constructive criticism are always welcome.

Sound like a nice project.
I like the contrast of the inside blue, we start to see it more often those days.
Maybe use some airbrush, particulary on the External HDD.

So no front air intakes ok. I guess the front looks really nice. Having the side fan is good as it will push air over the graphics card.

But the case has a dead spot as there is going to be little airflow around your hard drives if you lay the case out with the drives at the front. Because the air comes in through the side goes over the card and out the back. (Guessing on the fact that the side fan will be an intake and the back an outake)

And those puppies actually heat up a bit to. Just one thing to think about.

All in all the design looks very nice I especially like the striking front panel of the case with the two stripes and the USMC badge.

SgtM

The front air intake is on the bottom of the case. I have a blue 80mm fan mounted there right now. It's just hidden by the HDD rack. I didn't know how to draw that in sketchup. Thanks for keeping cooling in mind though +rep for that. I was actually just thinking of doing away with the 3.5 rack altogether and just going with the 5.25 rack up top. I only need 4 slots for drives. Thoughts on that idea anyone?

simon275
01-12-2007, 09:13 PM
Yeah you can by adapters which allow you to put 3.5" drives in 5.25" racks.

Hey Sarge!

Looks cool so far, I like the formal layout of the case and especialy like that emblem on the front. Just seems to me that for a themed case it needs a little more to it's composition, what do you think? BTW, let me know when you're ready to quit smokin ;)

I agree, it does look like something is missing. More than likely I'll add to it later though. This is my first mod, so I want to kinda keep it relatively simple. So far, I have to do sanding, bondo the louvers on the side panels, cut a window, cut plex for an 80mm fan, prime, paint, paint opticals, and mod the emblem to fit over the power switch. I also have to do some lighting work too. The red stripes are frosted plex with LED's in them. I expect this to take me a couple of months. I've never cut a window or worked with bondo before. I'm also contemplating on cutting the 3.5" bays out and just going with the 4*5.25 bays up top. A little worried about cooling though. I guess I'll work that out if/when the time comes.

I like the clean looks, it will be a great mod. Have you thought about adding a fan in the right side close to the harddrive area ( it has work well for me ) or cut one into the bottom panel near the front ( make sure their is enough ground clearance) this will keep the front panel clean.

I experimented with a mouse mod last night. Commando and I think alike. I PM'd him about maybe doing a mouse for me, and he suggested trying this same thing. I had a spare mouse, some black paint, and some clear coat. Then, I took a round foil sticker (http://www.uspatriotstore.com/images/products/Decal-USMC_smRoundSM.gif) and cut out the Eagle Globe and Anchor. This isn't going to be easy to get right. You can still see a lot of the red that I wasn't able to get to. Also, given the fact that the mouse is rounded, it was a bitch to get smooth. It's still not perfect, you can see one of the creases in S. America. I'm gonna have to put this under a magnifying glass to get it right. I guess it's not too bad for a first run though.

That mouse looks great! Perfect for you theme too. I wonder if you printed a scanned version out on some transparent decal paper and applied it with heat to fit snug, might be easier than working out the wrinkles. But either way I love the way it looks!

SgtM

Mouse v2.0.. I figured out how to get the bubbles out! I heated the sticker just a little and then pressed it out. I just put a coat of clear down, and I'll update again after the 2nd or 3rd coat is dry. I don't want to put too many down because this is just a test piece. When I do the final piece, I'll probably need 4 coats of clear at least so I can build up the edges and sand everything smooth.

SgtM
01-16-2007, 03:12 PM
Ok, I figured out the mouse. Gonna take my regular mouse apart tonight and hook up the paint. It's not going to be easy though. It'll probably take me a couple of days, but it's gonna be sweet!

edit: I forgot to take pictures of the test piece before I destroyed it. Pics of the final product in a couple of days.

Oh yeah,

One more suggestion about something I learned the hard way.

Most enamel clear coats are finiky when it come to coats. What I mean is, make sure you read the time between coats directions on the spray can.

I've had clear coats that looked and felt completely dry and then the next coat wrinkled horribly as soon as it hit the surface.

SgtM
01-16-2007, 03:55 PM
Thanks Commando. This stuff will take additional coats after about 30 minutes. There's gonna be 2 base coats of flat black then wet sand, 2 or 3 coats of red then wet sand, and at least 4 coats of clear wet sanding after about the 2nd or 3rd coat. FYI, I'm using enamel.

By the way, the mouse looks wickkeedd.

I'm lazy, I don't don't touch the color coats with sanding. Because also I know I'm gonna lay artwork down that you can't sand. Putting the sticker down on a smooth coat is gonna pay big though.

Also, I think it's a little creepy seeing your hand that close.

Looks awesome. The mouse, not your hand.

So here we go.. paint is done, and I have 3 coats of clear down. I wet sanded before the 1st coat of clear. I'm thinking another coat of clear (or 2) wouldn't hurt the body because of the sticker under it. I think I'll be safe on the buttons. How long do you all think I should give this to cure before using it? The pictures really don't do this justice. The mouse is smooth as glass. Thoughts, comments, suggestions are welcome.

The clear coats should be fine by now. Are you gonna polish it?

If so, you can sand with 1500 lightly or even 2000. Then use 3M rubbing compound to polish it out like a pair of boots.

I can't wait to see it back together.

SgtM
01-18-2007, 12:42 AM
whoooooooeeee that thing is slick, rick!

By the way, i found a easy way to put decals (not stickers, i dunno about stickers) is to do them underwater. I used to take my model cars after I had painted them, and submerge them in a bowl of water to apply the decals. It makes it very easy to work out an bubbles and smooth it over without ripping/damaging the decals..

Looks good rick, +rep!

-Jeremy

Thanks bro. The decal thing makes sense. I'll have to try that sometime. I just put a 4th coat of clear down on the rat. I'll check it in the morning and figure if I need a 5th or not.

Damnit! Damnit! Damnit! I went to put the mouse back together today, and I noticed that there was a small chip in the paint. Not a big deal I figured. Then I noticed that my fingerprints were showing up in the clear coat. I couldn't buff them out because when I tried, the clear and the red color coats smeared off the mouse. Up until today, I had only been handeling the mouse by the area that I masked off. Where did I go wrong? Not 100% sure, but I don't think that I let the red cure enough before laying down the clear coat. I didn't check the buttons for this flaw, so I might be able to save them depending on if I can match up the paint.

Next time, I'm going to give about 8 hours between coats instead of 1 or 2.

JRSCAcura
01-18-2007, 05:03 PM
would have put them somewhere warm (furnace room) to dry overnight before clearing than left the clear to dry 2 coats at a time that way as well. Your using acrylic over acrylic? Also di you give the mouse a light sanding before painting to rough it up? Than primed it with a plastic primer? That should solve all the problems. After all the paint is on it I would let it dry someplace warm for several days before trying anything with it. Finger Fu*king a paint job FTL. +REP for the nice results

Well, most of the paint just peeled off like skin after a bad sun burn. I was right about the red paint. I didn't let it cure enough before laying down the clear. The part that was under the sticker doesn't peel as easily. I'll probably start sanding this back down to the plastic this weekend. Here's a pic.

Well Sarge,
As a retired MSgt from the Air Force, I have to tell you I have always been impressed with the sharp uniforms of the Marine Corps. I think this mod is going to look fantastic and the mouse is a great idea as well. Good luck with getting it redone and can't wait to see the case when you are done. Your mock-up looked like the sharp clean lines of the uniform pants and it is a great idea.

Hey thanks MSgt, welcome to TBCS, and thanks for your service to our Country. The Blues could be uncomfortable, but damnit, I made them look good.. or something like that.

I'm really looking forward to making more progress on this. I'm going to try and get over to the shop this weekend and get the case sanded (this build will primarily take place in my Dad's shop). I'm almost certain that I'm going to do away with the 3.5" drive bay, and make brackets so I can house the hard drives in the 5.25" bay. Gotta see about getting my hands on some U shaped aluminum. Keep watching.

Hey man,

Don't stress about it. I come across like I just learned to paint sometimes. I've been doing it on and off for years.

I've ruined a ton of stuff. Hell I got a PS2 controller I tried to paint a couple of months ago that I ruined.

I have learned some things about salvaging a project.

If the paint is still gooey, you can go ahead and scrape it off. If not just leave it. Walk away from this part of the project at least for a couple of days. This helps tremendously. The time off gives you time to cool off mentally and it lets the paint cure the way it's supposed to.

Once the paint is hard. Sand with like 320 grit and then go down to 600 grit. Sand in between the buttons. This is where too much paint can screw you.

Then prime again and start from scratch.

I was rushing some of my latest projects and the clear coat was doing all sorts of weird sh!t. I finally came to simple realization of following the time between coats guidelines, on the can, actually works.

For aluminum, go to Home Depot and look in the roofing section. There is all sorts of hidden stuff back there: Wire mesh, Aluminum Sheets in all sizes. It really is a gold mine.

You could replace each letter with the radio equivalent, so that T then becomes Tango, b becomes Bravo, etc.

How you'd do this, i don't know. But it's an idea all the same.

While coloring the individual keys on the keyboard is not a simple task (I have seen it discussed here somewhere and I think fabric dyes turned out to work good, Crimson Sky also knows lots of ways to do this), I really think it would look best dyed black. The biggest issue to my knowledge is the wear than develops over time and repetative use, so after a while the tops of the keys may "rub beize". With your black case and the red mouse (sure you don't like that black?) I think this would look good with an all black coat and red LED's interspersed inside the keyboard for back-glow. Then I would cut a piece of red plexi in the shape of the Seargent's badge and bevel the edges, and cover the top surface with brushed aluminum vinyl so that the bevelled edges create an outline, and of course lit-beneath by LED will make an great accent.
If you made the srg's badge big (3-4 inches wide) I think it would look best unfortunately right where those shortcut keys are, but if you made it tiny it would fit nicely where the microsoft logo is. And I would mod the cable also (hell yes, why not?). Not sure quite what would be the most USMC'ish, maybe to use black cable sleeving to make it look like a fueling hose, or tie knots every couple of inches to look like those ropes you gung-ho folks climb.

I added a pic of a scope, think this would make a cool webcam?
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f395/jdbnsn/misc/scope.jpg

Also, have you considered adding a woking minigun? I know I sure have, I had drawn up some plans long ago to build a minigun that actually spins when activated and each barrel has it's own orange LED inside to fire individually. Let me know if interested and they are yours. BTW-this is not my drawing, I grabbed it off the net.

Weekend progress.

I spent a couple hours in the shop on Saturday. I was helping my dad with a dresser he's making, and I did some prep work on the case. I got everything sanded. I marked my window, and drilled pilot holes in the corners. Sorry for the crappy pics. I forgot to take my good camera with me. I had to take these on my cell phone.

Jon, you've got as many ideas for this case as I do. I'm trying to keep things rather small/simplistic for my first time out. One has to know their limits. I don't have a web cam right now, but if I ever get one, I'll keep that sight idea in mind. I do have 2 NCO swords. Could never cut them up though. I'm pretty sure there is somewhere that sells miniature models of them though. I have a few of these (http://www.semperfico.com/px/images/sergeant-blk-met-chevron-4004.jpg) lying around. Maybe they can find their way on the keyboard. I just think It's going to be hard to do something with that since it's starting out white... I'm sure I'll come up with something. The biggest thing is keeping the letters. Maybe water decals, then a flat clear coat over them? Hmm....

The rifle scope in jdbnsn's post is called an ACOG and they are really awesome. The thing that is interesting is in the picture that is posted the ACOG has a bullet through it. I've seen that picture before, I think in Marine Times, and it has some crazy story behind it, but I don't remember it.

This is a military themed case, so why not have some military stories to go along with it? If anyone has any other military stories, please feel free to share them. Oh, and why not debunk stuff while we're at it? Have a question about the Marines, or the military in general? Know a rumor or military myth? Ask away.

And lastly, have you considered adding a woking minigun?

No case is complete without it! Wannabeamodder made one of these, and shows pics in his Doom3 Blast door worklog (now featured.)

PM him for info, or maybe he'll drop by.

It's funny. This log is 7 pages long, and all I really have accomplished is changing the LED on my mouse. More to come soon. Here's the Blue LED mod:

d00d!!!! Those are aweome! The gold HDD cooler will go great with the anodized emblem on the front of the case. I think that GPU cooler will work. It might take a bit of modding. My card is a 5950 Ultra. They look close. We'll just have too see when it gets here. The only other thing I have to pick up in the near future would be red and blue LED's. I'm going for the 5500mcd type cuz I like things bright. I'm going to pick those up for .45/ea from a company in Oregon. I'm going to be getting paint (hopefully) next week. I'm really anxious to get the mouse going again.

So check this out. I went and bought a new lighter today. I was pleasantly surprized to find that it contained a blue 3v, 5500 mcd LED. I immediately started thinking "what can I use this in?" Well, I didn't think the mouse was bright enough with the LED I put in the other day. So, I decided to add one. Here are some pics.

Placement in the mouse. What I did was dremeled a small hole and stuck the LED in there. I was so close, I don't need glue to hold it in place. The soldering iron in the background is about 20 years old.

Here's some progress shots on the mouse mod. The body of the mouse is dull because it's wet sanded waiting for the sticker to be applied. I'm about the wet sand the buttons to clean some imperfections and add the final color coat. Believe it or not, there isn't 1 drop of clear on this yet.

Looks great dude! Nice work sanding it smooth. As nice as it looks I think it's missing something for that nice balanced look. By the way, I can't see any wrinkles either, the emblem looks awesome!

If you still have any bubbles just pop them with a pin. Also, the best way to eliminate wrinkles is the apply the sticker wet. Dunk it in some water with a drop of soap and it'll just slide into place.

Thanks for the advice guys. It's VERY MUCH appreciated.

Commando: This has been "curing" in my basement for about 48 hours. I hung it from a heat vent. By the time I get some clear, we'll be good to go.

jdbnbn: I agree. It does look like it's missing something. I think some black accents somewhere would look cool. I'm just not sure where to put them. I don't think I can paint the base black because of the blue accent lights I put in. I'm gonna play around with photochop and see what I can come up with.

ty: This was cut out of a rather thick foil sticker. I'm almost wishing it was waterslide at this point though, but I don't think the detail would be as high.

tybrenis
02-03-2007, 11:38 PM
Ahh, I see. Yeah, waterslide decals are great but I don't think the effect would be nearly the same. I don't know about foil stickers, but I know that the waterslide method works for other stickers too, not just waterslides. It does NOT however work with paper stickers, obviously, as they get nice and soggy...

So far, I have 3 coats down. FYI, I'm using Speed E-Namel paints. I was thoroughly impressed after just the 1st coat. Depending on how the 3rd coat looks, I might let it go for 2 days and then wet sand and lay down a few more coats. Haven't touched the buttons with clear yet, just the body. I have the same mouse, except black and grey and I wouldn't consider painting it because of how much use it gets. I've had mine for less than 6 months now and the side where your thumb sits, as well as the left mouse button, have now been worn smooth and shiny. You can see exactly where my fingers usually sit.
The keyboard that I got with it also has smooth marks. The space bar and the spot below it both are worn smooth and shiny.

Ok.. so I got some paint this weekend. Didn't get a chance to get to my dad's shop to pick up the case though. I'm thinking of adding some White LED's inside the case for accents. Probably on the same side of the case as the window. One in the front, one in the back, and angled so the front one illuminates the drive rack, and the one in the back will light up the mobo. Thoughts on that anyone?

edit: the mouse will be reassembled tonight. Cross your fingers!

Good luck with the reassembly!

White LEDs? I have some white cathodes in my case right now, and I really like them. No color, but makes the paint stand out great. If you want them to be like spot lights, you'll probably want Lazer LEDs (I think that's what they're called). Sounds like a good idea to me! Seems like it will look like a display case inside, showcasing the cool stuff in it. Nice idea, keep it up!

Well, I didn't think the mouse was bright enough with the LED I put in the other day. So, I decided to add one. Here are some pics.

Placement in the mouse. What I did was dremeled a small hole and stuck the LED in there. I was so close, I don't need glue to hold it in place. The soldering iron in the background is about 20 years old.

I like how that looks Slatter. Why is it that everything looks better with a blue LED in it? If you want a good source for LED's, check out www.lsdiodes.com. I just made a purchase from them last week, and I have to say that their stuff rocks. Prices as low as $0.45/ea, and they include free stuff too.

Started painting the main panels of the case tonight. I don't have the window cut yet, so that will obviously be the last part I paint. I started on the inside with the blue. Top panel and mobo side panel only. I'll probably only do the 1 coat since these parts won't be seen much (if at all). We'll see after they dry if I like it or not. I also changed the LED's in the front panel to red (HDD activity) and blue (power) ultra brights.

Check out the mouse shots above. The only difference now, is instead of 2 blue and 1 red in the mouse, there are 3 blue and 1 red. I used the same LED's in the front panel.

pics someone slipped something new in on us.. all I had to do to get that graphic was type p.i.c.s. (without the dots in between)

edit: here are some shots of the top and side panels I painted yesterday. Total coverage/wetsanding isn't required here because it's not going to be seen. The finish is smooth enough for my taste on these parts.

ATM, I'm working on another mouse mod for someone at my former employer (last day was yesterday w00t!). Well, the artist is dragging his feet on getting back to me. Not really a big deal to me right now with everything else I have going on. Besides, I can't argue with the price (I MIGHT have to pay for needles and ink only). Tattooing isn't his full time occupation. I kind of agree with the idea of waiting until you get out for a moto tattoo. Especially with the new restrictions the Corps just put out. I can't say that I'm at all enthusiastic about it. I've been out 7 years, and always knew I wanted to get an Eagle Globe and Anchor. I think it's about time I get it done. Come on out to Ohio Tony, and I'll hook you up with my guy. It's a little crazy for me the next 2 weeks because I switched weekends with someone so he can attend a wedding. I'm hoping to get some painting in and work on the head gasket for my '95 S10 during my 7 day break. I'm considering a cool frost effect that I think you guys will like for my window. Eclectios - Great resource man!

b4i7 - I'm interested. Details?

jdbnsn - I used sandpaper only. I started off with 60 grit and finished up with 400 wet. Should have taken shots of the process, but you see the time stamp on the post.. I wasn't thinking about it. What I did was took an image of the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, and made a black outline of it. Then, I printed that out and taped it to the back of the plexi. Next, I masked the front of the plexi, and traced the outline. I cut out the area to be sanded, and went to work.

Oh yeah, more good news! I've been contracting with First Energy Corporation (http://www.firstenergycorp.com/) as a Network Analyst since March. Actually... no, I've never been in the military... turning 18 this Thursday... If I've offended you or anyone else, I'm sorry... just trying to crack a joke. I'm most likely not going to join up for personal and medical reasons, but if I do it'll prolly be the Air Force. That's for a couple reasons, 1) The Army Recruiter won't leave me the hell alone and 2) I'm not much of one for running around and shooting, I'd rather be behind a desk (which would be boring as hell, but better than being shot at IMHO) and I'd like to learn how to fly. I'm probably gonna go into some sort of computer related field though.

Again, I'm sorry if I said something I shouldn't have, just me and my general ignorance from being young. And I really don't want to have an argument with anyone, so if I did something dumb, just ignore me and let me know what it was, thanks.
Great job sgtm.

b4i7 - dont' worry about clutter. I don't see it that way.

Commando - Yeah, the Corps does have that MAJOR advantage over civilian jobs. It's easy to become complacent. I'm pretty happy with First Energy. I'm surrounded by cool people. It's a shame I can't take pics of our data center. You guys would love it.

I'm anxious too. I went to the lender today to get the loan paperwork done. We finally got the offer signed by the seller. Now, I just have to wait for the loan to close (up to 45 days because it's a VA Loan) and then after that we have to give 30 days for the seller to move out. I'm hoping that everything goes quickly though. I know that the seller already has a new place about an hour from here, so we'll just see. I'll be able to do little things up until we move though.

Both of those are really good ideas! +rep. I don't know about the rifle badge fan cover, but I might be able to pull off Sgt chevrons out of aluminum. I thought about putting collar chevrons (the gold ones) on the DVD/CD drive covers. I'm not sure how it would look though. As far as the Marines Hymn, I would need a soundboard for turn on, but I could definitely make it so it plays that on login. Then maybe play evening colors (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/docs/12retrt1.mp3) on shutdown.

I also had another idea for the window, I have to do some testing on that first though. We'll see what happens.

Now the hard part.. What color should I use? I have red and blue (more red than blue). I'll have to wire up a few and see what it looks like. So here's my lighting idea. I was contemplating going with red, but I think that with the blue innards, I'm afraid it would wash out as purple. What I'm going to do is mount 4 led's behind the motherboard. According to an LED calculator I found, I can run it off of the 12v rail with a 1/4w resistor. What do you guys think?

um hey thats cool, the resistors take one fpr every led, use 1/4 w as you said and they have 470 ohm for 12 volt or 220 for 5 V

Thanks for keeping me in line Spacehonkey. Here's a picture of me buffing out the side panel tonight. Not sure why it's so dark though. Oh well, you guys get the idea.

EDIT: I'm finding out that I didn't do the best job wet sanding the black before clearing. Up close, you can see imperfections. No big deal though. I'm satisfied with it as is. If I'm lucky, I'll be finished with this panel by this weekend, and I can do the top next week. Still gotta get the other side panel cut and painted.

Just a small update. As we're getting even more settled, I'm finding that I have more time at night when I'm not working. I got the top panel wet sanded today with 600 grit. I have to pick up some clear, but that has to wait. My hot water heater decided to shut down on me. Parts SHOULD be only $60, but we'll see. The thing is only 2 years old.

No picture updates as of yet. Unless you want to see the top panel all sanded.

I think I'm going to redo the mouse. It looks cool and all as is, but I have a better design which will eliminate the need for the sticker, but still have the Eagle Globe and Anchor on top.

JB- oh yeah, that paneling will slowly make it's way off of the walls.

Well, I've been busy with everything else BUT this mod. I bought a buffing wheel for my drill to make buffing the panels a little easier, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Here's the good thing though. I have Friday, Saturday and Sunday off this week, and most of the yard work is done. It would be nice to get the inside of the case painted, and maybe some clear on the top panel. I still need a new video card so when the mod is finally finished, I'll actually have guts to put back in it.

SgtM,

Good to see this project still alive. I've got a tip that I think will really help.

When I started trying to get wicked glossy clearcoat finishes I thought it was the buffing that made you money. It's really not. It's the sanding. Here's the kicker. Sand in the same direction the whole time. This really is huge. Go 1000 grit until when you wipe it dry the whole panel is foggy(no bumps). Then go to 1500, then 2000 real quick. With the 1500 and 2000 just wetsand until the paper glides. It goes really quick. Remember same direction.

If you've done it right, buffing should take 5-10min max. You'll feel that spitshine smooth as soon as you put the buffing compound down.

I realized this a little while back and it makes a HUGE difference.

- sand in the same direction the whole time
- stay with 1000 grit until no more high spots or orange peel
- then go 1500, 2000. this is quick
- then buff

Before this i used to buff and buff and buff and buff and buff. you get the idea and it would just stay foggy. Sand in the same direction(not circles), straight lines and buffing will be wicked cool. You'll put rubbing compound down and it's like magic: Bamm!!! shiny like that.

I hope this helps.

I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at the references to the cold. It's been -30C here for about 3 weeks already. January and February are normally our cold months, so it's most likely going to get colder. I remember seeing -56C two years ago. At work, we have some new bosses (managers) from some tropical places, so this is their first batch of cold. I almost feel sorry for them, but I'll wait till it gets cold. HAHAHAHAH!!!! :D

And yeah, if I want to do any painting or fibreglassing, I'm going to have to build a paint booth. I certainly don't want the fumes in the house.
