View Full Version : Just an idea

Somehow I got my hands on a MicroATX motherboard and now I want to start thinking about what I could do with it. My first idea was to take my Guitar Amp, gut it, and stick it in there. As it turns out, it isn't anywhere near big enough. Go figure. My second idea was to take this old RISK box that is made out of some pretty nice wood and turn that into a mod. That was just to nice to destroy so its out of the question. So this is where I am at now...

Thats about as far as I got. But hey its a start right? I'm still looking around for other ideas which I'll throw in this thread if I think its worth sharing/discussing.

Oh crud, well scratch that idea. I can't buy anything right now or else I won't have enough money to buy my upgrades. ><
Okay, well is there anything that you guys would like to see modded? It has to be something that I have keep in mind. Since I can't go buy anything.

That is a pretty cool idea sirkillalot617! I have two guitars, one I will not even touch without wearing gloves because of the sentimental value but the other one is just some cheap-o I got from Gibson at Best Buy! So that is definitely in the realm of possibilities...
Hmmm....

Okay, I gave it some thought and tested out a few ideas and I have decided that I would rather not use either guitar as a mod. But thanks for the idea!

That breifcase is similar to something i am playing with at the moment! Theres a lot of room in those, and a lot of things and parts to play with. Might be an idea to continue on that sort of line?

I think I'll just use my wooden RISK box. ...Which comes with a few obstacles.
I need to shave off 1/8th on the inside on one side so the mobo will fit.
Then I need to figure out where all the holes are going to go.
I think for all the ports on the back I'll just guesstimate a couple times and then draw a long skinny oval shape.
Since I just realized that I forgot about, oh you know, EVERYTHING other than the motherboard, I'll have to draw and cut a hole for things such as; 24-pin power cable, hdd cables, and so on and so forth. Luckily, they are all back to back and side to side of eachother so I can keep it nice and neat looking.
Last but not least, I'll have to draw out and then cut out a vent whole which will then be covered in mesh so it doesn't look like crap. HSF (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835110013) < This just barely fits. lolThen I guess after all of that I'll create a second box to hold the hard drive, the micro power supplies, blah blah blah and blah.
I wish I had a camera...
I'll think on it and plan ahead a bit more and when I think I have thought of everything I'll think a bit more. Then if I am still comfortable with this idea being successful I'll post a work log. ...if I can get ahold of my dads camera.

Heres a stupid question. How do I shave off that little bit so I can fit my mobo in? I don't think I have a sander, which I thought I did, but apparently I don't. I have a couple drills though... I think I am going to have to be "innovative". Maybe if I take one of the drill bits and just run it along side of the wood? Maybe that will shave it... anyone have any ideas?

Doing that with the drill will ruin the wood. Get some highly abrasive paper cheap and use that.

I guess I'll have to do that Dave. dang it, I just wanted to do a simple and quick mod without spending any cash. lol Stupid thing, its only an 1/8th too big. Yet again, another reason why I hate dell. Well I had to go buy more wood eventually anyways to enclose the power supplies and hard drives.
Maybe I'll go rummage around in my shed for something else to use. There is loads of crud out there thats just sitting there collecting dust. Wish me luck! If only so I don't have to trash another idea! haha... god I wish I had money. ><
