Okay so ive moved my computer to the carpet floor, adn ever since ive been expieriencing random shiutdowns and restarts. Is the floor contributing to this. I would just like to know FYI im building a stand for it sometime this week hopefully with a fan to cool everything.Thanks. I really appreciate your help, and also. If it isnt the floor would it be the fact that i dragged it along the floor by mistaked for about an inch tops on one side well kind of on an angle. if there is something else that is the problem how do i fix it?

I have mine sitting on carpet. No problems here. Any reports in event manager? Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event Manager. You mentioned adding fans for cooling.. what cooling setup do you have right now? Could heat be a factor? I don't think anything is shorted ATM. Try running it with the bare essentials (Proc, 1 stick of RAM, 1 HDD, and video) and see what happens.

hm.....possibly dust on the floor clogging your fans and therefore causing your system to overheat?

My guess might be static charge building up and getting released into the power button somehow. I had that problem on an old computer. I had to make sure everything was insulated properly and then the problem stopped.

The first thing to do is move it off the carpet and see if it still does that.
I agree with the other comments here regarding heat/vent issues but it also could be something as simple as a loose wire from the power switch or even a shorted power on switch which if intermetent could be sending random shut down signals.

well, its not happening now that its sitting on a piece of wood
WOOD FTW BTW.

And FYI my Cpu idle sits in the low thirtys :S And my hdd does too.

My cooling as is right now, a 120 exhaust fan, and a 80mm intake.

Thanks boys.

I'd be willing to bet it's an older computer and just moving it around loosened something. Reboots are usually heat issues or compatibility. Since your hardware has been working, it's not compatibility. Troubleshoot down to a specific part. If it happens soon after power up, it's not heat. If it happens later it's heat.

I think I live in the static capital of the world and static has never effected or affected any of my hardware. I also don't want to jinx myself.

It does however suck every time you get out of your car and lock your door.

Dry air and California just being weird in general = weird static shocks all the time. Gotta love the desert.

You're in 29 Stumps and you can only complain about static!? lol.. I never want to go back there. CAX 1 AND 2 '96 was enough for me (we also hiked 107 miles from lake Hemet to Camp Pendleton as a "break" between CAX).

I was not looking forward to CAX at all. I'm kinda glad I got booted when I did. 107 miles isnt that bad.. My recruiter did an entire tour in Alaska. Did a 3 day hike in northern alaska with temps getting in the highs of -15. yeah. THAT'S a bitch.

We logged over 450 miles that year. The Alaska tour sounds like when I was in Norway. 2 weeks.. with Reservists.. 3 man tents.. 50 miles South of the Arctic Circle, in Febuary. I'll take the cold over the heat any day of the week.

I'm from Houston TX and I will take hot ass 110o-melt your face-balls are a wad of goo-humid/sticky heat over cold *_ANYTIME_*. I ___ HATE ___ cold weather.. HATE IT.

450 miles is a bitch.

even if it is stretched over a year. I'm glad the CO's ( i would have had) were lazy...
