View Full Version : Buried Car in Tulsa OK...
This is pretty cool. http://www.buriedcar.com/
Heres my lame summary of "whats happen"
Well, apparently someone in buried a car in 1957 as part of a contest in Tulsa Oklahoma. The prize was $100 and the car. The prize was to goto the person who came closest to guessing Tulsa's population in 2007 (50 years later). The enteries were recorded on microfilm, everything was sealed in a concrete time capsule underground. Other contents of the capsule include:
Other items included in the time capsule were:
* 10 gallons of gasoline and 5 quarts of oil
* A Douglas Aircraft Co. aerial map of airport facilities and legend
* Statement from Tulsa council of Churches and prayer for greatest good next 50 years a recently completed history of churches in Tulsa and a directory of the present churches
* Statement from board of education - historical data related to 50 years of education in Tulsa and copies of "School Life" all-high school publication issued by Tulsa high schools each month
* Statements from Mayor and Chamber of Commerce officials
* Flags which have been flown over the national capitol, state capitol and in the county and city
* Other aerial photos of the area
* Statement from Tulsa Trades and Labor Council
* Statements from all former mayors of the city - their record of service and civic accomplishments in the city, state and nationally.
I really don't have much else to say abouty this, its a car, buried. I just find it freakin cool.
Well, its going to be unearthed as part of the Oklahoma Centennial festivities on Friday, June 15, 2007.
They are unsrue if water has gotten to the car and turned it into a rust bucket, or if it will be retrieved in mint condition.

im sure that there going to like open the capsule up and the gasolines gonna like explode in their face or something lol
I was reading an article on it a few days ago. Apparently it was forgotten about for a few years and the father of the lady running the thing told her about it recently and she got interested.
The original list of the guessers has been lost, as well as a lot of other info about the contest. Hopefully the microfilm will clear things up.
Still, a very neat idea and something you don't see everyday.

Well you know where I am going to be on June 15th!!! :)
I have been hearing stories about it since I was a little kid. A lot of people are optimistic about its condition. It should be a really good time, there is also going to be an invitational car show to go along with it. I will have to post some pictures of the event. Only 141 days left to go.

This is cool. Wish I could go.
It's supposed to be unveiled this summer and I'm only 3 hours from Tulsa. Maybe I will go. This is rather unique and I'd like to see it in person.

I know, playing Dr Frankenstein here by raising a long dead thread.. BUT.. The time has come!!
June 15th is coming nigh and with out prior announcement the festivities have begun!
They have popped the top on the crypt! I am a little ticked that this wasn't in any of the agenda's, because I thought they were supposed to do this Friday at noon. But apparently they are going to actually lift it out on Friday at noon, and then there will be the big unveiling at 7.
They did look in the crypt but they haven't unwrapped it. Here is a clip from a local station and I won't spoil it.
http://www.kotv.com/e-clips/?id=6717
So see for yourself...
I am still going on Friday for the unveiling and then there will be a car show on the 16th as well. If you like I will post pictures.
It looks like they will do a live broadcast on the web of the noon event and the 7pm event at http://www.kotv.com/special/buried-car/
If anyone is interested...

Actually it is in a plastic bag. Plastic wrap wasn't even really available until 1956 so thats probably the reason it didn't get done that way.
OK .. now for a little update for those that are interested. The water has been pumped out and the car/crypt has had a little time to dry out. They have established that the steel lifting skids under the car are sound, and they did a series of test lifts. They took the opportunity while the car was in the air to go ahead and put backup skids under the originals just in case. Apparently the car wasn't EXTREMELY heavy so that is a good sign that its not full of water. :D They also got a better look at the vehicle thru the plastic bag and from what they thought what might have been some rust may just be some mud. So that is good to hear as well. I guess that if by chance it does come out rust free, that is one heck of a testament to 1950's water proofing!
Also the one and only Boyd Coddington (http://www.boydcoddington.com/Store/Default.aspx) is here in Tulsa. He came out to inspect the vehicle once its been extracted and also to try and get it running. He seemed optimistic but didn't make any promises.
The other news on it was that so far the farthest traveler to view the unveiling is from Sweden. A family has flown in just to see the car.
Here are some news clips:

I am really looking forward to tomorrow, but I am afraid I might be thwarted. Apparently in order to keep order they have decided to sell tickets to the event (Or at least that was their excuse) and of course it sold out before the information was released. I think a bunch of the bigger companies downtown bought blocks of seats for their employees. So I am not sure what I will or won't be able to see. The tickets are for the actual unveiling so I am going to show up for the unearthing which will be out in open. So I may end up just watching the unveiling on the tube, but then on Saturday it will be out on public display during the car show. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow so that should make it interesting as well.
So check back here for updates :)

I really, don't see how the hell that vehicle is going to run.
I mean, it'd be GREAT if it did, but...
Even if they had drained the fuel, and are pumping new fuel in...
I think that their biggest worry would be the valve springs of the engine.
All this time compressed (the ones really compressed @BDC), I don't think it did them good.
This is going to be cool!

Sorry I didn't get these posted earlier but it has been a long day!
Well I got to watch them yank it out of the vault today and it went flawlessly. It rained a little about 5 minutes before but then the skies cleared just in time.
They ended up putting up VIP bleachers so I didn't quite get the vantage that I would have liked but I still was able to see it rise from the ground. Here are some pics of the event.

This could be called "Where is Waldo" or I should say Boyd (Boyd Coddington for those who don't know.)
http://www.ovride.com/pictures/galleries/BuriedCar/P6150025.jpg
I got to move once the car got to the trailer, so here is a shot of the car on the trailer.
http://www.ovride.com/pictures/galleries/BuriedCar/P6150028.jpg
After the car was safely on the trailer they extracted the actual time capsule. I snapped this shot quickly and took off. Why did I take off? Well basically I figured since the car was on the trailer and they were going to have to transport it to the convention center about 5 blocks away, AND everyone was busy looking here, there would be no one setup along the route. I walked about 2 blocks over and sure enough the street corner was empty. So I ended up with an AWSOME view of it as it went by.
http://www.ovride.com/pictures/galleries/BuriedCar/P6150033.jpg
Then my camera totally jacked up and I wasnt able to get a pic of the back
It doesn't look too bad???

Well the the unveiling is over. And the VERDICT is....
RUST!!!
I wasn't able to find any pictures of it yet, but its all in one piece, but none the less it was covered in rust. I was hopeful that the bag hadn't ripped but it did. The trunk looks like an archaeological dig site. They got the hood open but Boyd said it was too far gone to be able to start. The decision was made that the car be left exactly the way it was found. Hopefully they will at least clean the mud off of it. :) They were able to recover alot of items, they were also rusty and corroded as well. Either way it was still pretty neat to watch them pull item after item out and try and identify it. I held hope up to the last moment that we would still find a gem, but its still a prize for those of us here in Tulsa.
Tomorrow is the car show and it will be on display there along with a multitude of others. I will be attending and hopefully if my camera decided to cooperate I will have some much better pictures of it.
I did find a flickr stream of someone that was closer then me, so if your interested... Here it is.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47422262@N00/
BTW.. They opened the actual time capsule as well. It may have been rusty on the outside but it held its integrity. Everything inside was just as it was 50 years ago. They found the entries for the contest to win the car, so they will make the announcement on the 22nd!

I wonder if they're gonna do the same thing with a modern car. They'll definitely need gas in that case, lol, just so long as nobody digs the car up just to steal some gas. They could really make it waterproof today. It would be interesting to see...

Actually we already have. In 1998 to Celebrate the founding of the City of Tulsa ,we buried a 1998 Plymouth Prowler. It was buried in Centennial Park which is only a few blocks away from where the Belvedere was buried. It will be unearthed in 2048.

Actually it was 2 phases. At noon was the "Unearthing" which is what I was able to attend. The "Unearthing" was just them removing it from the vault, but it was the first time the public could really view the vehicle. Then they transported it to the Convention Center where it was "Unveiled" at 7pm on a stage in front of everyone and on TV. Unfortunately they decided to sell tickets to the unveiling and they sold out even before the announcements could go out. :(

They said they are going to fill in the hole, but I think they should dry it completely out. Then go in and reinforce it, use some modern water proofing, and then do it again for another 50 years. Maybe they could bury a 2007 Chrysler 300C. I figure a 300C would be about the equivalent of a 1957 Belvedere in 1957.

wow what an uninteresting, ugly, rotted mess of an automobile. The "technology" did indeed exist in the 1950's to properly archive this vehicle underground. Consider that submarines were around a lot longer, and they are waterproof to at least a few feet ;)

oh well, too bad. Looks like it would of been a nice car if they would of taken the proper precautions to properly preserve it. You see, initially, they DID create the Prowler with a V8.
But they *knew* they were not going to produce such a car with a V8... so they never showed the public a V8 Prowler until AFTER production ended.
Imagine, nobody would have ever bought a Prowler cause they *knew* a V8 version was coming out.
I'm with you on the V8 though!
But... not your denominations.
You have a Ford there (351), and two Chevys (454/572).
How about a nice... hybrid?
Ford big block... Hemi heads... quad Holleys...
And you want a supercharger?
And a 6 speed?
What the hell do you want to do dude?

Actually they are supposed to announce it TODAY.. but I haven't heard anything yet.
After they announce the winner, they are going to wait until August 24th for the winner to come forward, OR their closest identifiable heir.
Then they will present the car to the winner on September 14th..
I figure either way, some local museum or the Tulsa Historical Society will end up with the car.
On the Prowler.. There were some protos of it with the V8. I believe they had difficulties with the DOT, and so they backed it down in the interest of actually being able to produce the car. As it sits now, Its ALL show and just a bit of GO, That blue one put on a little show leaving the lot. Its got some ZIP but its just totally missing the sound! I mean it should just rumble the ground with looks like that!! :D but it doesn't :(

I second that! Talk about 1 wild ride!! That engine might be a little wide for the the front of that car, but heck thats half the beauty. Seeing a motor like that peeking out the sides. Who needs a name badge on the side of the car when you could just put it on the valve covers :D

Looks like they have a winner... R.E. Humbertson His guess was 2000 away from the actual population of Tulsa. In a bit of a surprise looks like there is more to the prize. A savings account was found to go with the car. It was started with a $100 deposit. Looks like that baby has matured to a whooping $700 bucks. I guess interest rates weren't that good 50 years ago either.. :D
OverDrive,
THANKS for the pics!!!!
Really enjoyed them!
I love the '55 Chevy.
Gorgeous!
Slow the Earth's rotation down?
:D :D :D
Probably.
The person probably gave it back after the commotion had settled down.
:p
Hahah, yeah I noticed that. See, I did the 2 chevy's because thats all my friends have, and the ford cause thats what I had :P. But think about it, any of those could be placed in the Prowler. Hell, it would need to be modified beyond belief, but it could happen. With a supercharger you could be pumpin out 800 hp? A 6 speed because anything less would not be fun for the street :P. Of course you would need to reinforce the frame with I-beams from a skyscraper, but it would be one sick ride. It could probably break 10 seconds on the 1/4 mile with a good driver.

I like this man's way of thinking.

Crap yeah!
"break" the sides of the engine section, make the engine protrude from the car. :D
It was started with a $100 deposit. Looks like that baby has matured to a whooping $700 bucks.
May this be a lesson to all:
Either move your money, or you will loose it.
I'm going to do a little research, but I'm just curious what would have happened if those $100 would have been dumped into the S&P500... or the 100.
Let me have my fantasy 8)
Sure thing mate!
Just let me get a ride on it, please :D :D
EDIT: wikied some S&P info... apparently, the S&P500 was introduced in March 4, 1957 (lucky us!).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S&P_500
I'm on the run, but, do we have a 1,000% return on investment?
Gonna have to break out the economics formulas and tables... even with inflation...
100 in a bank = :dead: (700)
100 in the S&P = aprox 100,000 (:D)

Well, I wouldn't take the car. I'd take the beer and 700$, but not the car. Not just because the car is a complete POS now, but also because it is a part of the town's history and I wouldn't feel right taking that from them. Now, were they to rebuild it, I would take it and drive it and soforth but I'd give it to the town if I were to move away.

I would take it, rebuild it, and donate it to them for a museum centerpiece kinda thing. :D

Those 50's cars look great, such a beautiful design, though I wouldn't want like that covered in rust!

Hmmm..... A Prower with a 720ci supercharged V8? Handling done by Lambo and styling by Pininfarina. THAT would be a car.

If I'm not mistaken, that would be a 1957 Plymouth Fury, just like in the Stephen King book Christine.
Which would also explain the license plate...

I was kind of hesitant to post my guess that it was a Fury--the front grill is completely wrong. Regardless, that's one sweet car.
Dave, are you looking for an actual Belvedere or would a model suffice?

Anything with similar features. The twin front lights, the chrome, the curves, the tails. That sort of car rocks my boat. Another model I like is the 1959 Cadillac El Dorado...

...and the Ford Thunderbird, much like this one here. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/1959_Ford_Thunderbird_Convertible.jpg)
I love the way these cars look. My dream car.

UPDATE on Miss Belvedere as they have named her.
The Winner of the Car has been found! Unfortunately he died in 1979, and his wife passed away in 1988. They had no kids, but he did have 2 sisters that have been located in Maryland. They are in their 80's so I have a feeling the car will probably end up in the possession of the Tulsa Historical Society. Like we didn't see that coming.. heh
