You butchered a real robot, didn't you?
Poor little mite.
Did you know that magazine was put together by this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Warwick)?

Erm... Why put a light sensor in a computer? Likewise with the blackline sensor.
Put wheels on the case, and make it into a huge real robot!

Nice pic of r2d2 but i wasnt planing on doing a mod that big.
How good are you with electronics?
Well im pretty good and i did half of my work experience with a joiner/electrician.
I was thinking of trying to make a switch with the sonic things so when it detects your finger there it turns on and maybe use the light sensor to turn the lights when it gets dark as for the rest i dunno

What went with the infared reciever originally? And could the bat sensor be turned into a switch? By waving your hand over it.

Thats called an "LED 7-Segment Display".* You should go buy a ton of those and make a killer Back to the Future case! :D
And a thing that uses sense much like a bat to see where things are
That's called an ultrasonic sensor and, as you said, uses the same principle as a bat's echolocation or a submarine's sonar.
If you are going to make a robot, I suggest looking at the Lego NXT robotics kit (http://mindstorms.lego.com/) as they use some of those sensors.
*I've been looking at the Digi-key catalog. :p
