wait.. there is another way.. you need something hot (as in high temp, but not that high).. a very steady surgeon hand, sandpaper and lots of planning.. i won't say anymore.... ;)

I was gonna do this same thing, but I ran into this problem.

What are you going to use to power it?

SgtM

There's 5 volts coming in from the USB source. FYI red is positive, black is negative. I just noticed that the fan is 12v. If it spins, it's gonna be slow.

01-27-2007, 10:46 PM
hehe.. true.. i recommend finding a fitting 5v fan.. really tough to find tho, but it would pay off.. :) the breeze is gonna turn in a storm...
(ok.. i'm going back to watching the exorcism of emily rose... mm mm m m)

Reyer
01-27-2007, 10:56 PM
i actually tried running it off of the 5 v
and it ran pretty well, not to much or too little
just enough to sooth my hands

i hope

im alittle woried tho cus i ran it off of the 5v and i saw smoke and smelled some burning stuff. i hope it was just because the fan wires were touching other stuff

auch... be careful not to fry anything.. one thing you can be worried about is the amount of current you pass thru the circuits.. the usb line is limited to 0.5A, that's 2.5W.. a normal mouse needs 0.5W, the leds you add consume a few miliwatts, and a motor can consume 1 W or so.. don't take too skinny a wire.. use multi-stranded copper wire, with good insulation and carefully and minimally expose the wire for soldering..

also, the fan@5V pressure is gonna go down a lot.. in its place, thru the mouse parts, it will move far less air with all obstructions..

tomaro im going to go buy a cold heat
WOOHOOO
and im guna take a peek at the dremmels

andd at the epoxy's.

does any one have a recomendation for a good one for me to install the fan with?

dgrmkrp
01-28-2007, 12:15 AM
i used super-glue or cyano-acrylate.. a paper intermediary layer may be needed as i found that the plastic from which the fan is made doesn't like the glue...

another way would be to use some kind of 2 compound resin.. some kind of epoxy.. or plastic cement? i have to investigate this thoroughly because i will be facing this decision soon too :)

Reyer

i need a base for the fan to sit on
is there a kind of foam or something? i dont want to go all out for some bondo.

im jsut thinking if i try and superglue it, there wont be enough contact area to keep it stable.

Don't get a coldheat! They suck!

BTW, sweet mod. Been following your progress.

Reyer

if u say so. its probably better than the crappy chunk of soldering iron i have.

well
that will save me 14.95

i guess i will get at dremel then

I bought one and it was awful. You can use it for anything other than short, really quick jobs. I recomend just ponying up and buying a nice digital one, but really anything is better than the cold heat.

Just thought I'd tell you about this place, they sell fans of all size and shape (and have some really cool pint-sized blower units which would make for a cool case vent), but anyway...

nice website,
but i think i can fix my fan.
the only part that broke was the red wire, i accidentaly ripped it out, and the area to solder it back on is way to small,

if i tried i would probably melt abunch of plastic :) so
im thinking if i get the dremel today i can cut a bit of the plastic off to expose the circut board and i can fix it up
