It's a lever with a hand brake attached that was used to stop cable cars, mountain sky trams, that sort of thing.

A bull wheel is the giant wheel that powered these types of conveyances

Well, a quick google for bull wheel reveals that it's a wheel around which a belt or cable runs. Like you might see at each end of a ski lift for example.

If they have lever operated brakes, then there's your answer.

Now, why were you asking?

Edit: Damn, beaten to it.

If you touch a wire to a germanium crystal in just the right place, it forms a diode.

Ever heard of a crystal set (radio)?
Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_whisker

Anyway, that process is use to make signal diodes (as opposed to rectifier diodes, which are silicon and higher power).

my girlfriend has an exam, and she sent a sms
