HI, I wanna split my side panel fan cable using headphone jacks so that every time I remove my side panel I don't have to unplug the fan from its (hidden source).

My fan only has a black and a red cable and I was wondering if I needed to use a headphone jack to connect black to black and red to red or can I use one to connect the whole lot?

Why use a plug at all? A couple of carefully placed contacts and it will connect automatically when you fit the panel.

I know defyant did this sort of stuf on his mods sometimes... Try the search on the top of the board...

You will have to keep the wires from touching each other. But most audio-connectors (if not all) have two "channels" anyways, one for your red wire and one for your black. You can use one plug, just dont mess up the wires
(red to red, black to black, don't let them touch eachother)

[edit]: It is on HP Resurrection II evolution and on HP Res 3 MEGA, I think in the HP Res 3 mod there is also an explanation (but I'm not sure)

Yeah. Make sure the red on the fan goes into the yellow 12 volt on a molex. Also, you could make a quick connection by running a molex through the metal around to the crack between the HDDs and where the case panel goes.

you can take a phone jack and sand down some of the plastic , in addition to breaking off the little tab, to get a nice connector that connects easily when you put your side panel back on. its easier to line up if you sand it down a bit on the edges on both sides so that the receiving end has a wider opening.

Cool Thanks, If i really needed to could I have a sepperate connector for the black and red wires?

Yep, no problem with that. Although if you're doing it manually it will take longer with two connectors.

Doesn't bother me, I rather take a bit longer then get it wrong and start again.

Erm, you're more likely to get it wrong with two connectors. You have to be careful every time you replace the panel.

A jack plug (http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=1145) and socket (http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=1162) is probably the easiest way.

Um yeah sorry thats how I was going to do it, should have explained better. I was goibg to have two male and two female ends and connect them before the panel goes on.

idea! :

you can put the male connector of the red wire on the "case-side" and the male connector of the black wire on the "panel-side" that way you can mess it up even with two wires...

though a normal plug also has two 'channels' and if you use one connector it is always easier...

Hmm... I can see a flaw. That means you have a male and female on the case, and a male and female on the fan.
If you're not careful, you could connect the case's male and female together...

Better and neater to use one plug.

yeah, that is theoretically possible...

but, no offence, if you are stupid enough to connect wires comming from the same side on a mod that you did yourself, you deserve to blow your mobo...

really, it should be quite easy to see which wires come from the panel and which one come from the board, right?

another solution is to use different plug to connect multiple wires (like different sizes or types...)

Yeah, but we've all done daft things...
These are probably the best kind of thing to use.

As used on radio controlled model cars.

Those radio controlled car connectors are exactly what I was looking for. Thanks xmastree.
