any computer tech/builder/tinkerer worth their salt is going to own one for quite some time to come.

I have one in each of the computers around here.
Will continue putting them into computers I build.

I have a couple lying in a box somewhere.
Still use them for Raid Drivers

Oh!, and I forgot, have one with my card reader, dont take much space and continue to be useful in certain occasions

I have about 12 of them. I only realized last night how many i have. One in my SO's computer, one in my sgi540-to-pc mod, one that is _supposed_ to be in my current system (not connected, but still used to load the raid drivers in case I need to reload windows). I even have a scsi floppy for some of my old sgi systems. I only recently threw away 2x 5 1/2" floppy drives, still in working condition (let see you try and buy media for that drive).

I am in the process of purging stuff, that is how I know how many I have...

Most of mine are now part of the TIP-3000.

I have a few scattered about. I don't use them since I converted all my boot programs to CD.

There pretty good for transferring work files and storing things that are to small to put on a cd or pen drive

Tthings that are to small to put on a cd or pen driveNothing's too small for a pendrive. Too small for a CD I can understand (despite CDs being cheaper than floppies...).

Speaking of old floppies, back in the 80's I had the misfortune to have to modify some test programs on an extremely old ATE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_test_equipment) machine. This thing had two 160kb 8" floppy drives,no hard disk and only enough memory for one line of code.
Tweaking the program involved putting the old version in one drive, and a blank disk in the other. Then, line by line, copy the code from the old disk into RAM, edit it, then save it to the new disk.
One line at a time.

No going back, and even if you were only changing one line, you had to copy them all across. One by one.

I own a floppy drive or two, but I have them in a box, not in my computer.

I hate floppies :dead: , and when it comes to people who still want to use floppies I am very adamant: "no". I really do hate them that much-I don't have any (working) drives in my house and I would never mar my beautiful gaming computer (or even my not-so-beautiful gaming computer) with a floppy drive.

i agree with you on that one minty, does seem more of a tool than a useful item that you must put in your pc.

I have one, Its in my dresser drawer with some of my other parts. I ripped it out of my old computer when it died. I don't even know if the drive works. I honestly don't know the last time i used a floppy. I'm only 18 and I'm new to system building. (Ive done some tinkering, and i Know how to build a system, but i cant say that I've ever built a system from scratch) My experience with floppies is pretty much just what my mom has had laying around since my child hood. I remember thinking that it was fun to slide the little protective door back and forth. Ive opened a couple up i think.

I just remembered that i actually do own ONE floppy. It came with a book i got for Christmas to learn C/C++. I have no clue were it is, and if ever use it i will most likely copy everything to the hard drive. All it has is a bunch of sample source codes.

I keep one handy in my box for flashing BIOS's and other driver things
