When I have the IDE cable plugged into my CD drive, the drive doesn't work. But when I have it unplugged, it does work. Whats up with that?
I don't know if this is a problem or not, but I can't get into my bios on start up. It just flashes the blue Dell logo and then blacks out. I don't have an OS installed as of yet, is that why?
I'll bet a buck or two that I'll have more problems later.

Sounds like your mobo is fired. Which is not cool. The optical drive problems seems weird to. Really if you cant even boot there ain't a lot you can do.

That... would be really bad. I got about three bucks right now, I'm pretty sure that won't buy a new mobo. I guess I could sell my other two socket 478 mobos with Pentium 4 procs and 256mb ram each. Probably wouldn't be enough to buy a new LGA775 mobo though.
Well everything seems to work fine other than the whole not starting up problem and the CD drive issue. I don't know if this helps at all, but the orange light on my power switch stays on the entire time while the green light just flickers once really quick when I plug in the power supply. Oh yeah, the power switch doesn't seem to work. When I plug in my computer, it starts up automatically. But when I go to turn it off via power switch, nothing happens. When I take out the switch, I can't even power up my PC. I've tried two different switches and they both have the same effect. Maybe I need to reflash the mobo or something?
lol why doesn't anything ever go my way?
oooh, and I just learned that its not my mobo flashing the dell logo, thats just my monitor. lol
Everything is lit up and seeming to be in working condition (aside from the optical), it just won't boot up or anything?
I think I know what to spend my three dollars on. MORE ADVIL! ><

Okay, well this is weird.
I powered off and on a few times and finally got it to show the loading bar when you first start up your computer. Then it went to the black screen again. *This is the only time this has happened
After a few more on and offs, I got this four lined message. It went black before I could get the fourth line, I touched the Blue Orb lightly on the edge of its fins when it went black. *haha! I know why now! It went black because when I touched the blue orb, it made something on the back of my motherboard touch the mobo tray, powering it off.
*Both times, the "orange" light and the green light were lit up green. When nothing happens, the green light flickers momentarily when powered on and the orange light stays on.
Intel(r) Grantsdale-G PCI Accelerated SVGA Bios

**the fourth line is just copyright stuff.
Also, I just noticed that the four led's on the back of my computer aren't all lit up with green. three of them are green, the other one is orange. This is probably due to my perephials though. I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse.
**another update
I unscrewed my mobo and have it leaning toward me, away from the mobo tray. Now it boots up that message every single time. Where as before it was a shot in the dark.

Do you have it mounted on the gold riser things?
Orange light I take is the power LED? Then I'm guessing the green is HDD activity, meaning it wasn't active before.
Are you using a Dell PSU? It might not be powerful enough to power everything.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the message you have. It's just telling you information about the BIOS you are running.

I'm not using any risers because they don't match up. The only holes that match up are the holes on the motherboard. I'm using risers with the threads cut off as makeshift nuts to secure the cpu cooler. Those are probably hitting the mobo tray and causing the short out. I'll have to find some shorter nuts, but for now its fine because its not up against anything.
Well the Led's are showing activity now that I have the mobo sitting away from anything that it could come in contact with.
Hmmm, well my dell power supply is 305 watts. Right now I'm using 1.5 gigs of ram, optical drive, hard drive, keyboard/mouse and the blue orb. Before, when my computer was working, I had the 1.5 gigs of ram, two optical drives, a hard drive, keyboard and mouse, case fan, video card, and a wireless PCI adapter. I'm going to assume that I'm not maxing out my PSU.
Right, its not a warning message or anything, but when I power my computer on, it goes directly to that screen and stays there.

lol well I ripped out my motherboard and threw it across the room out of frustration.
After a quick heart attack at the thought of what I just did, I ran to my motherboard, hugged it, apologized, reinstalled it, plugged everything in and then turned it on. I then got this message...
CPU Fan Failure!
OMGOSH! ...oh wait, duh, because there is "technically" no fan plugged in.
No Boot Device Found!
Press F1 for Retry or F2 to run again.
Are you freaking kidding me?? IF I KNEW THAT ALL I HAD TO DO WAS THROW IT ACROSS THE ROOM, I WOULD OF DONE THAT HOURS AGO!
...Just in time too!

Kind of funny how it started working just as my OS was finishing downloading. I think God has a sense of humor. :dead:

Now I have a new problem... I was supposed to save the file, but I clicked open with WinRAR instead. I burned it to a CD but it doesn't work as a boot device.
So what do I do to put ubuntu on a cd so I can install it onto my computer?

... So you didn't actually save the file, just opened it?
Ok. Here are the steps you need to take.
1. SAVE file to hard drive. Go back, download the .iso, and save it somewhere on your computer.
2. Get your preferred burning suite, and burn it as a CD Image file (if that's what they call it). You might not have that capability on your software, and if so, then just get DeepBurner (http://www.deepburner.com/). It has an option right away to burn .iso files and it won't do it wrong.
3. Pop the CD into the drive and reboot.
This is going to take some time, so get out a good book and make some hot cocoa. Re-downloading will probably take you all night, and when you burn, burn it at the lowest possible speed you can. It helps with the writing to not have errors.
Edit: You also might look into downloading the .iso through the Ubuntu torrent (http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.10/). Who knows, you might get a lot of seeders and have it take less time. You will however need a torrent client, but you can find your own, as I don't know how the mods go about dealing with posts about free software torrents. To find the .iso torrent files, look at the bottom of the page and find the .iso for your architecture with a .torrent extension.
