View Full Version : XBox DualRumble controller?

I was thinking about it at the job... I've got a non-working PS2 controller over here somewhere, which have dualshock, and I dont know if it could fit in my xbox controller, in addition to the two original rumbles... the place would be kinda small, and I don't know if the original lines would support more juice in them.
I also would like to put LEDs in it, I was also wondering if I could make them light when the controller is rumbling, but keeping the "dual rumbling" function... And I'd like to use a switch to make the LEDs go from "rumble mode" to always lit, would it be possible? If all that owuld be possible, is there a way to power everything from the USB line and not from the rumble line when it would be in the rumble mode? (for the LEDs)
Thanks for your time reading this and answering questions... I wanted to make a mod with my controller, now I have the rumble motors and I could have 8x1.5V bright white LEDs, the idea is tempting.. :)

tempting indeed. i think you would need an external power source (battery pack or solar powar if your a hippie:))that would be very shaky. the rumblers on the dualshcok moves it across the when vibrates...have fun!

You couldn't get those motors in. There's no room in the controller.
And yes you can put LED's in. Just solder them to either the USB line or to the power going to the rumble's depending if you want them rumble activated or not.
You don't need an external battery, the USB line can support em.

Would the use of LEDs direcly on the rumble line, in addition to two more rumbles, burn the rumble power line?
Maybe if I could toss the motors in a "corner", I could have some more free space, so that I can place two more motors? Ill open my two controllers down tonight and look at how I could manage the space in it. Note that my XBox controller is the "sarge", the big ones...
and if I use 1.5v leds... that'd mean I would need 4 of them soldered together, so they work at 6V on a 5V line, making them less bright (they are bright). To make the LED more/less bright, could I use rheostats like there are in headphones for the volume? I found one of these at school, it also includes a switch that I could use to switch from USB line (always on) to rumble mode.

For the LED's use 3 (3x1.5=4.5) and a small resistor.

You *might* be able to fit the rumbles in the regular (not s) sized controller if you dremel out some holding, but it would be tight if you got it.
I'm an xbox modder, so i've taken apart a lot of those controllers before.

The XBox controller's gonna wait a bit, since I just got a new rig that I can't wait to overclock and maybe mod a little bit. :)

Aight, so my father got a new dremel and I can't wait to try it out. :)
I still need more info on these rumble motors (which looks just like CDRom motors), with the two wires (black and red) that are the same things in the XBox controller, PSX controller and in CD drives. Red wires normally means 5V line, Ill need to grab my DMM and measure the voltage of them direcly onboard while playing (that's gonna be a tough one), Ill probably dremel out a part of the back of the controller and put the extra motors there, and use bondo to do a "rised" style to hide the rumbles. Ill forget about rumble lighting, as I don't want to burn the rumble line.
If you have any tips on how to do it, or actually just plain tips on anything regarding modding, id like to hear it... 276 posts and still no mods to my active, ive gotta do something :)

Im more and more thinking about it... but instead Im planning to do it *externally* by using an old memory card or a Xbox live communicator. The only thing is, they are way too small for the motors, so Ill need the dremel, and a sturdy material to house the two motors. I was thinking about plexi, but it'd be hard to bend and it wouldn't be a good thing to mix with ABS plastic (esthetically talking).
Sorry for those who want to know how it's going to turn... but my father doesn'T exacly agree with modding, and he insist on knewing on which voltage the motors runs before doing anything. Besides, Ill need to buy bondo and probably more materials, which means $$ which is hard to get.

it would be pretty cool to set up the lights to light up with the rumble...
all i can think about it halo 2.
everytime you get shot the thing would light up and i would make it bright red LEDs

I'd do it... but the only thing Im afraid is toasting the rumble line if I put double motors and lights. I have no idea what is the limit of the line, would therebe a way to find it without killing the controller?
I would also do it red... I keep my XBox Live Connector in my controller and when I enter the game I push it to mute (red) even if I aint on XBLive. xD Im also planning to change the green LED to red on the XBox, but that'd mean warranty voiding, which also means "I can't accept your XBox for a trade-in, sorry" at the EBGames store. That is, if I ever decide to sell them back... lol
maybe a single LED on each motor, with a resistor so a 1.5V LED on a 5V line wouldn't burn? someone could tell me which resistance I need?

Have you ever heard of the '3 rings of death'? That happens when somethiing is broken inside the xbox and people have to get it repaired. What I'm getting at here is that the 4 power LEDs are dual color so they can turn from green to red if there is a problem. They're also probably surface-mount LEDs so it would be hard to change them.
If you can find other SMD LED's that have 2 different colors it might work, but I advise against it.

Actually, I only wanted to switch the wires from place, so they light up as red and flashes green when something is wrong... hehe :P

That's ironic...
If you did send it in for repairs the guys at MS would go nuts trying to find the problem when they see the red light or they would think there's nothing wrong with it and just send it back.

lol i did that with my xbox before it ended up in the trash i was planning on modding it but my mom thought it was garbage since i removed everything on the inside. i might get another one soon though.

LOL
Modding is all about going through new limits, eh? so why not going twin rumble? If it fits and works, and is better than original, then it's a new mod, right? :)
And I want to do this because Id liek to have something unique to me... I know I could mod my computer case or Xbox, but I feel like I have not much to lose by modding my Xbox controller than the Xbox console itself. And I don't take my computer to LANs or anywhere where people can see it, so unless I plan on modding it for better airflow (or some cool lighting), Im not gonna do much to it.
Oh, and I'll end up playing Doom3 without the need of audio; since the rumble wil ldo so much noise it's gonna shake and buzz anything that covers damage, gunfire and stomps :)

xBox controllers already have two rumble motors. One's a high-power one, the other is a low-power.
Oh, tip. Make a xBox to USB Dongle, then install the XBCD Drivers. Inside the config is a rumble test setting that allows you to control the percentage of the rumble -- and it stays at that setting.
I used it to massage my neck one day. Worked pretty well.

Thanks for the reminding, I had forgot about the XBCD to help me test it. :)
That means I could test the voltage direcly on the computer? Woot! thanks! I already thought about doing the USB dongle mod, but I don't have a spare breakaway cable.. Ill have to stop by EBGames and Spoutnik to see if they have any spare one.
Do you know if the two motors in the Xbox controller runs on the same power rating? The controller is USB-controlled, so I thought it runs at 5V. And the two motors are almost identical to the Xbox in the Playstation controller, with the same wire colors, so I thought both runs on the sam evoltage... but Ill have to try it out first.
