ok so i found this through the grapevine/ether/whatever you want to call idle surfing through piles of news.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=6138

i figured this would probably be worth making a thread.

so 700 million transistors, 1 gig of GDDR4 with a 512 bit bus, and heatpipes. sounds pretty cool... or maybe i should say hot... i dont think theres going to be anything "cool" about this card.

one thing that strikes me as... odd i guess... is the march 30 release date. that is quite a ways away. when did the 8800 line come out? wasnt it before the new year? nvidia's got quite a headstart in terms of sales id say.

anyways... im in such shock about this that i dont even know what to say really. someone else's turn.

Well, going off of that information, it sounds like they kind of dropped the ball a bit? I would think after waiting this long for the R600 to come out, it would at least out perform the 8800 by a decent amount. What other reason(s) would people have for being interested? Size? (If its shorter than the 8800's, probably not) and what? Just being a fanboy of ATI? Maybe if its cheaper and performs either close to the 8800 or matches it, maybe then I would be interested.

For me personally, it would not only have to perform at least as good as the 8800, but it would also have to be smaller in size for me to be interested. nVidia just has too good of a rep as being a "disappointment-proof" graphics processing unit brand. I also think "8800GTX" sounds way more cool than R600 too, that might play a factor. It does for me at least, thats why I'm buying a X1600XT, just because it sounds better than nVidia's equal to the X1600XT.

**Wait, I just noticed something. Is R600 the name of the card or is that the name of the... processor?

the r600 is the processor. the card itself apparently is going to be the x2900xtx. it doesnt make sense though... because the 9 "should" be reserved for the refresh. it makes more sense to be the x2800xtx for the first card.

Ah, okay, I get it now.

Well I think you are right about that Slug, they _should_ of named it the X2800XTX. I wonder what they are going to call the next one? X3000XTX? Idk, X2900XTX just doesn't sound that great to me, it kind of sounds repetitive. They should of thought up something that was "fresh and new". Like....

Trogdor3000!

Then call the refresh the "Burninator Edition". Now that I would buy just for the name! lol

Posted that article already in another R600 thread.

Anyways, you might want to change the title of the thread because it has been delayed.

i heard that the r600 was the X2800XTX not the X2900XTX
that name is so ridiculously long (like the card)

i heard from a friend it was delayed till end of march

That was true when the article was written in November. lol

But the article I found is an update. A product can be delayed more than once.
