Before I can actually post work on this thing I have guys producing images from photoshop. Now cut that out.. LOL you guys are making it look like all these images are fake!

You can remove the plastic on the edge of DVD drives and replace it with wood so it wouldn't need to be so thin. But I'm not sure having everything wood plated has a great look. It takes even more contrast away from your facade. And no, I'm a photoshop novice, still learning.

I actually like the back with the wood contrast. it looks good to me but Im open to suggestions.

I agree I like your idea better . Plus I think it would be a lot easier to pull off.

Ok so thats what I'll go for. Wish me luck.

(this will separte the men from the boys) This one board will have to be routed out 4 times. Twice for the DVD (on the back of the board to get the DVD close to the front without going thru or cracking it) and twice for the beveled edge for the tray dressing. The hole will have to be precise which means that the board will have to be measured from only 2 sides to prevent a miss of a fraction of a inch. The cut out for the on/reset switch will have to be done on the band saw with a accurate fence (I have a kreg fence on my band saw so that should work). I planed the board down to 21/32" to give me a flat surface and still allow for the routing. I will have to create a button for each to drive the tray. 5 screws from the inside of the case will hold the board on. I will again use the inserts for anchors for the screws (machine type). New trim will have to be created and then used to hide the holes for the inserts. More work will go into this one board then almost all the others.

Hmmm do you have any others that you do like? Drop me a line and let me look at what you think is possible here. If it fits my build I can take it into consideration. Thanks

Sorry for my late reply ;)

No i can't think of any now that will suite your mod, but i really feel that this one doesn't :(

But hey, it's YOUR mod dude, if you like the temp sensor, use it! :D

OOooo...JD I like those analog gauges. Great Idea. In my opinion, the hex mesh (or any metal mesh for that matter) is going to take from the warmth and softness you get with wood--think RADIATOR COVER. Blech.

i still think some tasteful use of marquetry would look very nice ;)

It would have to be thin. I dont know if I can plane anything down that thin. It would have to be cut using a forest blade on my table saw. That would be the only way. I can try it to see what happens but getting my hands that close to the blade upsets my stomach. LOL but I have done that before so ...

Hey what are you guys Photoshop guru's ?????

Gunner you can always make a thin sheet of cherry on the table saw by making a double pass (but you know that). Raising the blade up full should get you what...3.7"?..double pass flip over would allow you to cut a 1x8 easily into a thin slice. Then you could send it through your thickness sander and then use contact cement to mount that homemade laminate onto a thin sheet of aluminum. That would make for some very clean cut-outs, say using a scroll saw, or hell, even a utility knife for the wood and scroll saw to remove the alum. I would then take the bezels from an alum case, snip off the sides and attach that to my laminated bezel panel. Easy mounting to the case!

You can always stain the wood dvd covers black ;)

Get creative with your bezels--think outside the box for material and parts that are easy to get. Using an aluminum door saddle for Jujube allowed me to make really fine cutouts for my front panel devices using a jigsaw, holesaw and rifler files. For the USB and mic/phone jack, I simply made a paper and pencil rubbing of the device and used that as a template. Doesnt get closer than that!

I got an idea from reading other people suggestions. Since you were unable to paint the drive cages black. Why not make like a wooden box or something to cover them up on the inside? Especially since you don't need to attach anything with screws because of the slide and clip setup you have going.

Neat idea but the sides provide air flow to prevent damage to the drives. Don't think I would get enough air flow to prevent the overheating of the drives unless I rig a fan to extract or blow air into the cage. Thank you

I have started to cut out the new panel. I used my trusty ole table saw but had the need to break out the band saw. With the Kreg fence it was quite accurate to cut the inside corners.

Hey Tale Gunner. Your mod looks awesome! I have always admired a good wood worker. A good friend of mine had been teaching me some techniques and I think if you're still looking for a way to make a cover for the DVD drive plate you could try this. Take a piece of Cherry MDF and put your guide on the table saw about 1/8" to 1/4" away and use the piece of cherry that holds the MDF together. I hope you can follow that. I havent done anything like that in a while. But we needed a really thin piece to pick up the slack and (I can't remember what you call the iron-on piece that is used to give MDF a finished edge) and it worked really well.

Thats a great tip! For something like that, I would head down to my local Woodcraft and buy some cherry veneer specifically for the purpose. However, in a pinch, thats a good suggestion.

In woodworkers words:
Take a piece of cherry veneered MDF and set the bandsaw fence to the depth of the veneered substrate, usually between 1/32" and 3/32". Resaw the board so only the veneered portion is removed, and voila, you have your own veneer.

I have gotten to the point where the rear of the panel has been routed out. Looks good and it wont be seen from that side but it still looks good.

There is edgeing that covers the end but I haven't seen it in cherry. I have seen oak and maple. Good idea though. I have cut a piece of cherry 1/16" without breaking it. I will see if I can do something with this. Thank you very much.

TThe next step was to adjust the table to cut the lower line of the opening. Then take the panel and place it face up on the table. Using the router lift allow the bit to cut through the wood.

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/2597/img0578ve9.jpg

Slowly moving the wood from side to side cut the 1/2 of the slot.

Next readjust the fence of the router and lower the bit so that it is just under the wood but not touching.

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/57/img0579la8.jpg

Raise the bit up through the wood again and this time cut the upper line for the slot.

http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/7825/img0581jf1.jpg

Sand the slot and clean the edges with a razor knife. (I'm not done but I wanted to show how I was progressing)

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9872/img0582uw2.jpg
Then I tested it for fit.

I set up for the last cut this evening. Its starting to loose daylight and I don't like to work without proper lighting. I captured the bit just coming through the wood this time.

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2673/img0591bj7.jpg

Again the fit with the DVD drive moved to the upper slot.

Tale Gunner,

Invest in set of mortising bits for your drill press. Super easy and super clean corners. Stealth the optical drives with the veneer... The look you'll have when finished will be what you want...

I have them. Look at the post earlier. Hummm "off to drill a square hole" (page 23). It all comes down to preference. I happen to like the router table because of the depth I can get especially since it was 6 15/16". Thats a little hard to do on a mortise machine or attachment to a drill press. Thanks...8)

You can or you can create a actuator to work with the panel and phush the button on the circuit board.

Not sure yet. I am working on getting the trim and finishes to the panel. I will make a cover for each of these rather I use them or not. I will be creating a bevel on each of the openings to feather out the finish. The covers will have the same feather. Thank you

I while back I found a tutorial that shows you how you can create a stealth drive and not have to rewire a new button placed somewhere else on the tower. They used a small square piece under the cover plate over the eject button. Here is the link ----------> Lego Stealth Drive (http://www.rabidhardware.net/?id=2).

Thats what I believe he was saying. To parallel the existing button or like I said to create a actuator through the panel.

I took the day off and started out to build my new router table and fence. New miter trough.

http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/1017/img0600kb3.jpg

A test form for the table lift.

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4889/img0601sv7.jpg

Holes to hold the new router fence

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/2109/img0602cl4.jpg

It took a couple of hours to build this fence. Once it was built I used its accuracy to cut the miter trough.

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/8411/img0603is1.jpg

That's my daughter helping out put the miter trough in place and yes it fits like a glove.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6630/img0604re8.jpg

Once it was anchored it tested satisfactory.

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/9652/img0605yw6.jpg

Daylight began to leave us so all the work stopped, but not before we started to cut the new plate in.

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/1540/img0607hr2.jpg

The old router table was removed from the frame and the new was secured to it. Now I will take and complete the router lift insert and its a new router table. I will use the old one on the table saw for additional router setup. I did all this to clear my mind and get back to that I need to do and that is finish the computer case. I will be able to use this more accurate fence for better cuts and alignments.

At little off subject here but I think you will see where I'm heading.
I took some time off to create a new tool for my wood working. It started off as a minor mod (much like our computer cases) and grew from there. Remember the start:

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/8318/allgoneuw6.jpg

I wanted to have a little better control over my work so I started to design a new and better one.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/8365/img0611bk3.jpg

I added the new router fence system from Incra. But the table just didn't thrill me. Sooooooooooo

I found an old table being thrown away with a 1 1/8" top. Now thats my kind of top when its all wood.

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/4716/img0612ib5.jpg

Created an addition to the table for storing routers and other options. Added some drawers for storage and dumped the 2nd table top for the newest.

http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/5628/img0614mm6.jpg

Aligned the fence to the router insert.

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3303/img0616nh5.jpg

Removed all the hardware, sanded the top and added a touch of finish and what did I get?

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6596/img0619xa3.jpg

http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/7484/img0621xl7.jpg

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/3324/img0623dy9.jpg

Now I can really have some fun here. I will be resuming my quest on my computer case.

Not much of an update here. Been real busy with work and family. I had to go to the doctors for passing out. They ran an MRI, EEG and other tests in an effort to find out why. At my job they gots many delta band saw and overall these saw are great,I never changed a motor on any of them, depending on your job, look at how many hp the motor had. This make difference between a great and a bad saw...

I am starting to do minor work on the wood case now. The doctors still do not know what was going on but I will be limited to the amount of work done with power tools

Im sorry I have been away for so long. All my toys are ready to dust off the cob webs and get back to work (after such a long lay off since my last post). Only thing is I have to get a knee replaced now (lol), I just cant win. But this week end has started the testing of all my equipment in my wood shop.

Welcome back TG! Missed you big guy! A ton of people have been asking about you man. We all missed you. Can't wait to see you back in the shop. Everything with you is ok? Tolerable? I have my own problems now too. I thinkI have a heart problem. Well,... we're not for sure but it runs in the family. Been having heavy hearts beats and fullness in my upper chest and neck/ throat. I refuse to give up my lifestyle of modding/designing/fabricating, going to the gym, etc... My doc has me on Toprol XL 25mg now. I'm cool though. I'm not worried or scared about it,... more or less it's pissing me off:) lol. anyways,... break out the broom and duster,... get that place cleaned up:)

Fantastic! You're back. Great to see you are getting back to work. See the great thing about knee injuries (if there is such a thing) is that you can still do a lot of work and scoot around on chairs with wheels.

I had my own heart catherization done and the coronary arteries were clear. That was the good news. The MRI and CT scans don't tell anything conclusive. So... I got tired of just letting my equipment rust. I do this because I love wood working and computers.....Thanks for all your thoughts and I pray that everything turns out good for you.

I'm with you man,.... you could be waiting a while trying to figure out whats wrong. You might never find out. No sense to wasting time then. You do what you like to do and that be that. If something happens something happens. Thats life. Same goes for me. I have schedule some tests now. This S@#$ is driving me nuts. But im still working:)

Well believe it or not I worked on this project today. I started off working on my compound miter saw putting an aftermarket laser to aid accuracy and then had time to work on my case. I will post pictures later as its 9:34 pm and I’m sweaty and stinky and tired (mostly tired). But I made plugs to cover the old location of the hinges because I was having some issues with them. After plugging the holes I redrilled the hinges and now I’m satisfied with the results. I put the door back on and tested it and all is good. Thanks to everyone that was concerned about my health. I'm doing great and back to 85% of my old self.

Believe it or not Road Runner has finally fixed the problem. I could not log back onto the forum for over a year. I have worked with Paul and Road Runner and it all came down to Road Runner. I'M BACK. I will be showing some of the new and improved drawings and progress. Unforunately for me I lost my job due to downsizing and now have a new purpose in life, to find employment.

I really have restarted finishing the system. I took time to seal the wood and tung oil the water pump housing. Then I took a old PS and cut the connector to the motherboard off. I needed to create the on/off circuitry and latch circuit that will turn on and off with the main system. The first picture to share is the after the sanding sealer on the wood.
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/272/img1254l.th.jpg (http://img30.imageshack.us/i/img1254l.jpg/) The wood has a beautiful natural hue to it. No stain here just natural wood.

The front has a really fantastic grain.
http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/570/img1255m.th.jpg (http://img2.imageshack.us/i/img1255m.jpg/)

Next I took time to add the PS for fitting only. I wanted to make sure of the wiring for the pump, fans and turn on circuitry.
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/66/img1256u.th.jpg (http://img43.imageshack.us/i/img1256u.jpg/)

The layout is exactly what I wanted here. I then disassembled the PS and spray painted it black. In more pictures I will show the PS disassembled and the paint job for the unit.

Tale Gunner
10-02-2009, 09:22 AM
The power supply came was super easy to disassemble as you can see in the picture. That made my job so very easy. Once I took it apart, the painting was easy. Remember that this is just an old 300 watt PS that will supply power to the water cooling. This allows me to do maintenance on the water cooling section without having to power up the computer. A bypass switch will allow me to energize the water pump to test the system and perform maintenance on the system.
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/4517/img1257k.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/i/img1257k.jpg/) Well the only thing to do now is watch the paint dry. Hummmmm

As for my job, no such luck yet. I sometimes wonder why a company would give up experience of 20 years. I know that its easier for to cut the higher paid employees and put someone that makes a whole lot less in their place but the experience is lost. It takes a long time to make up all that lost education. I continue to look for employment. :whistler:

Tale Gunner
10-02-2009, 09:53 AM
This is the case while I watch to see how it dries. Humm think this may take about 5 hours to the touch with 24 hours final.

I just finished a mock up of the water pump system. Checking for leaks and making sure to get the air bubbles out of the lines. Everything worked perfectly without leaks (kinda the most important:banana:)
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/8341/img1264wv.th.jpg (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/img1264wv.jpg/)
Here you see the water block for the CPU just hanging outside the case.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7984/img1265n.th.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/img1265n.jpg/)
Here is a view into the water pump housing. Things are moving forward and since the long time away from the project. The relay is used to turn on the power supply for the water pump when the main system is turned on. I plan to add some LED's in the water pump and case to add some flare to the system.

Thanks Override it's great to be back. Being ill and without a job takes its toll.

I let the system run last night to check for leaks and run out any air bubbles. Air will make noise in the system (for you sailors out there cavitate). It’s now quite and water tight. Next step is to finish the main computer case. I disassembled the case from the water pump last night to see the movement of the water bubbles.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/8715/img1266g.th.jpg (http://img514.imageshack.us/i/img1266g.jpg/)

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/7812/img1267j.th.jpg (http://img525.imageshack.us/i/img1267j.jpg/)

After I get the case sealed with the sanding sealer, tung oiled and waxed, I will have to break down this computer to put in into the case. Good thing for me that I have 4 other computers here that I will be able to post updates and pics with. I know that some (not all) have only the one computer and have to take it down to finish the mod. The 5.25", and the 3.5" racks will be painted black. The paint takes so long to dry. I guess I'm not very patient these days.
