Well,
1. You could use Google to find stuff
2. Wikipedia might have stuff on him
3. Gather enough evidence that will point to him, and you can easily get him in trouble.
4. By "friend," you mean one of your good buddies you like to hang out with? If so, I'd just like to let you know that turning him in would be betrayal, or, depending on how you look at it, helping him in a moral lesson... you decide.

The American justice system concerning what we in the UK call 'computer missuse' is ludicrous. I've heard true stories that will make you think you lived in Nazi Germany. If you turn him in, they'll either:
1) Find him guilty, and make an example out of him
2) Find him innocent, but make his life hell
If you're turning in a guilty guy, then good. He has it coming. If he's innocent, then you will be making his life very difficult. Make sure that you're certain before contacting the authorities.

Well if he knows you as intergalacticman online and off, posting his screenname here is not a great way to be anonymous about it................it's only a matter of time before this page pops up on google.

I don't think he would be able to remain anonymous. He'd probably be called as a witness in court for this.

So, he's more or less a total jerk that doesn't really help out society in any way... it would (most likely) help out society to do sum-bow-dis.

MySpace phishing, while easy, is still wrong unless it's used for benevolence, which in most cases it's not. I know somebody who DOES use it for benevolence, however. He helps track down child molesters in our area through IP logging with a simple piece of JS.

Agreed.
Bust 'em.
Agreed. Nail the ****er.

Yep.
I see this as a good way to turn your rep color from red to green ;)
Like has been said, if he is just a small-penis boy with a big ass mouth, then ***** him. If he really is guilty of all of this, then **** him
If he goes to your school, why not befriend him. Have you never heard?:
"Keep your friends close, your enemies closer"
build a repetoire with him, have him take you to his house one day, to show off his "1337 sk1llz," set up a minicam, or a pen-cam, get some shots of him and his screen. Ask to use his computer, copy his hard drive contents to a 40-60gb external. There are SO many ideas I have for you to git em with...
Use your imagination. This *is* a forum for imaginations, case you didn't notice.

I love all of Jeremy's ideas. I also don't think I could say it any better. Find a way to get this cockbite some time behind the bars and you'll be doing the internet a favor, definitely a +rep worthy thing in my eyes.

Huzzah, knowing how to reformat hard drives to Healthcare confidentiality standards.
Here's how (not like it's hard):
Reformat to FAT32.
Reformat to NTFS
Reformat to FAT32
Reformat to NTFS
Install OS.
DO A FULL REFORMAT. Not Windows' installer "Quick Format". Getting rid of file links + changing filesystem is a sure-fire way to obliterate any and all traces to data you don't want.
Good point, unless it was like a brand new external one... but yeah, it could get "messy."
Not if he does what I posted above.
Or, if it's not a boot drive, skip the OS install part.

Jai, you're flat out hilarious. But yeah, the world has enough assholes to where taking one like this out won't make that big a dent, but it will make a lot of people happy. I like seeing justice being served, but to the people that deserve it...

Hey man, one less cockbite is one less cockbite, and that's that. It's still a favor, so don't devalue intergalacticman for doing something.
(Not that that was what your were trying to get at, but that's how it might come off)
like scrambled egggggs baby
xD

No problem, man. If you ever need data recovery and you can't figgur out how to do it, too, you can send two HD's to me (the drive in need of recovery and another to put the data on so I can send it back) and I'll give it my all. For free, too (assuming you pay for shipping!).
EDIT: Might I also add that I had a 60gb that had a blown transistor and I somehow managed to get about 80% of the data off it, scot-free. If it weren't for that, I'd have not much of a music or video collection left.

Alright, cool. I must not have worded that well then, it would be doing the world a favor, by the "justice" deal, I didn't think that through, true justice is the good people being rewarded or something like that, and the assholes getting what they deserve, right now I'm in a bit of trouble for something... and we'll leave it at that, for now. No, don't ask, I might explain when it's over...
But yeah, intergalacticman, I say go for it, and good luck, this guy didn't **** me in any way, but he could've and would've if it hadn't been for you posting this. First step on the way to recovering rep. For wanting to (and hopefully eventually making) the world a better place, and having a way to do it, here's a rep point.

Um stealing his files is actually a crime. The police need a thing called a warrant to do so. So even though he could go to court. He could drag you into this and have you up for electronic theft. So I wouldn't try it.

If i was you intergalacticman, i'd not bother with the evidence crap. You can either go for this formally or you can go for the 'anonymous tip-off' approach.
Like i said, try to find out if he's just shooting his mouth off first. Because if he is, he probably doesn't deserve what's going to happen when you contact the authorities. Even if he's aquited of all charges he probably won't get his computer back and he'll have to pay huge legal fees.
If hes guilty, then like Crimson says, bust him.

Yea, any hacker always has his crap under a tight ship.
Seriously. Just call the cops under the Anon tipster. Your outta the loop on anything. I'm sure the cops will freak if you just call him a hacker. Theyll get a warrant. Bust him, take his computer, rip it to parts. If anything. If hes found not-guilty. Youve just made a dickheads life really annoying.
(Zomg political rousing statement) Gotta love the patriot act ^.^

Pssh.. Put him in the front seat with me, I bet I whoop his ass..
I mean... I could pull it off.. ;) Just give me his trust, and 5 minutes with his PC. I could at least have it uploading his contents to an FTP, as a backround process.
-Jai
I don't know what world or country you live in, but you can't go taking stuff off of peoples harddrives to use as evidence no matter what the content is. Do NOT listen to anyone here suggesting you do so. Jeremy don't go giving out legal advise about **** you know absolutely nothing about.
Not to mention if the guy panics and gets his fathers pistola and shoots you in the back of your head.

Quoting Drew: "and so says god"
But yeah, Crimson made a good point there. If anything, you don't want to be in trouble yourself. Isn't stolen evidence unusable evidence? I remember learning something similar to that in a class I had once... if you hear him say something, you'll be a witness to something that'll bust his ass. Believe me, I'm going through something similar, and I'm not the witness. I may tell everyone about it in the future.

haha ill just call the cops on him and tell him that there is a known hacker named
blah blah blah who lives at that house over there and theyll get all excited.
busting a hacker is probably the most action my police department has seen this year (literally) the sad thing is though, that he has serious skills (look at his 5th grade science proj.-http://www.usc.edu/CSSF/History/2003/Projects/J1203.pdf) so he might destroy any evidence they had. and he is one of those people that would sue anyone (including me) to save their own hide from the law

It's like "if only you had used your powers for good, then I/we wouldn't have to do you in." Seriously though... with luck, he'll learn something from this and maybe turn around.
