Build an Environmentally-Friendly PC
As seen in Slashdot. (http://hardware.slashdot.org/hardware/07/03/02/2028211.shtml)
Here's a copy/paste:::
ThinSkin writes
"While gas-guzzling cars are greatly to blame for releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, computers play their role in warming up the Earth too. ExtremeTech has an informative how-to article on building a green PC (http://www.extremetech.com/print_article2/0,1217,a=201714,00.asp) that will not only help save the planet, but will also slim down that energy bill. An important component, or culprit, to consider is the power supply, so investing in an 80 PLUS (http://www.80plus.org/) PSU is a step in the right direction. The article also discusses how to configure Windows Vista to utilize its power-saving options."
And here are the /. comments modded @ +3 (http://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?threshold=3&mode=thread&commentsort=0&op=Change&sid=224904). <-- nice read!
Enjoy guys! :)

Pffff...screw the planet. I love my PolyStyrene and laquer thinner solvents.
The Earth will be a lush overgrown tropical paradise very, very shortly after the bumbling bipedal bags of water known as hoo-mans are gone. How completely grandiose of us to think we can actually destroy the planet.
One asteroid or giant caldera like the one in Yellowstone National Park can and has in the past, poisoned this planet with toxic gases and almost wiped out every last living creature. Earth abides.
This planet heals itself better than people think it does. Dinosaurs lived here for 300 million ****in' years among the poison and ash spewing volcanos. Pshhhh. The Earth, by its own track record, absolutely LOVES to completely poison itself every now and then. Hey...it's just what it does good. What happens a few hundred thousand years after these events? Eden. absolute paradise.
Now gimee a Giant Panda burger, and pass the ketchup.

I think i read somewhere, that the oil scrubbin people that went to alaska awhile back after a oil spill, scrubbed so much, the area became barren. (No micro organsms)
And another thing. They need to keep those enviro ****heads outta computing. They've got other **** to deal with.

I just read an article about Al Gore's energy bill at his home--- $30,000.00 a year. Granted, he buys energy from a company that uses alternative sources...but C'MON!

...and to think he made a "movie" about "global warming." Pfft, I (unfortunately) had to watch it in Earth Science, what a load of crap, it was mostly about him campaigning and other s***, and he didn't even really make any parts of the movie, he had little "talks" with people, video taped them, and put them on the big screen, whoop-dee-doo. Here: Link (http://www.saber-scorpion.com/rants_stupidscience.htm)
That rant is overall quite good, but if nothing else, just read the first part, it made sense and made me laugh. What a hypocrite.

I wonder what Australia is going to do about professionals that use incandescents (photographers), oven lights (high temps), and refrigerators (cold temps/time).

I think this all just part of the earths cycle we will heat up to temps simular to the time of the dinosaurs then we will have another ice age and will be back were we started again. Oh and I will be dead by the time these changes really come into affect so it wont be worrying me.:D

Sounds like you're channeling George Carlin there CS.
I gotta agree with ya though, the planet is fine, it's the people that are buggered!

Yeah GC is the man. I also watch too much Discovery Channel.
I reckon these greenies are out to get me.
I like my cars loud and poisonous, the greenies wanna ban 'em.
I like my PCs loud and poisonous, the greenies wanna stop that too.
I like my lighting bright and poisonous, the greenies want to stop that also.
I like my cigarettes strong and poisonous, everyone wants to stop that one.
What's next?
I like my 'quality time' with the wife loud (not poisonous).
They gonna ban that too 'cos of the increased CO2 emissions from the increased breathing rate?
**** em burn the planet. No, scratch that. Burn the greenies.
I would +rep Crimson for his rant, but I can't.
Completely agree that we're pretty inconsequential where the planets concerned. But hey, when has futility stopped a greenie?
Thanks for the rant, it's not very often I'm in company where I can express myself freely with intelligent people.

In general, although i agree with some parts of what's being said, i feel you're missing the point.
Although we humans will find it difficult to 'blow up the planet' we can sure as hell make it a horrible place for our kids and descendants to live in. Which is really what this is all about.
Oh, and the whole "I'll do whatever the hell i want, screw anyone who disagrees with me" attitude...it doesn't really impress anyone guys. You might enjoy a cigarette, but what if the people around you don't? There's those who'll take it outside and theres those who just don't give a **** about other people and how they feel. Maybe you could be a bit more considerate. So what if you start using a different type of light bulb? So what if instead of filling up with petrol you're filling up with hydrogen?
