View Full Version : West Coast Tsunami Warning

About 5 minutes ago (8:45), a 7.4 earthquake hit about 90 miles off the coast of the San Fransico/Eureka area. A tsunami warning has been issued for the costal areas of California. Check local news for updates.

The tsunami warning has been canceled. 911 was flooded with calls from nervous people trying to get information, so the warning is no longer in effect, but northern residents should be on the alert.

wait, they cancelled a warning just because the 911 call center couldn't handle the calls?

stupid people. why would they call 911? watch the tv instead

Doesn't the Emerangy Broad cast say tune to this stations for more information .. Looks like 911 is the new 411 when stupidity strikes hard.

Exactly. Since the tsunami tragedy in the east, people become paranoid and ignorant whenever they hear the word. I guess people don't care enough to check their facts. Last night, I ran the numbers, and there was very little chance that a 7 point earthquake 90 miles off the shore of Eureka would generate a wave large enough to endanger anyone below San Fransisco.

There has been a strange chain of events latley, though. First the tsunami disaster. Then a smaller quake in So Cal. Then a very large earthquake in northern Chile a couple days ago. Now a 7- pointer off the coast of CA. I wonder what this could mean; I'm no geologist, but that many quakes in such a short time span in a generalized area can't be good.

Its probably just plate collisions under the earths surface.

Naw-uh! Really?:rolleyes::rolleyes: And do you know what results from a series of strong and violent tectonic plate collisions in a generalized area?

Hehe, sorry for the sass:D

Severe Volcanic erruptions... Both types of earthquakes... It all depends on the type of collision.

Ah, I see you are literate in geology!:p Okay, I've had my fun. Now, I wonder what professional geologists are thinking about this strange series of events...

I live in Golden Colorado, We have the National Earthquake Center located in town. All the Data feeds into here and is analyzed here. The amount of activity lately has been really interesting. It seems like we have been hearing more than usual this past year. There are so many quakes happening all the time, that most people don’t realize how many there really are.

Here is another one for you to think about.

The disaster quake/tsunami in asia came 1 year to the day after the disaster quake in Iran that killed 35,000+ people

both on dec 26

Third serious earthquake to hit this week huh? That worries me. I know there's a lot of tectonic activity around the pacific rim, but this frequently? I'm sure it's just paranoia; like I said, I'm no seismologist.

That's the thing about quakes: Unless you can fly out, there's no escape.
