First of all, Hi everybody, first time poster... Well, my problem is that I own a hp compaq d530 sff Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz, 512 Mb; recently purchased a Radeon 9800 pro without ever noticing that the darned thing ( the pc, that is ) only supports low profile vid cards... I really don't want to have to return the card and settle for something lesser, so my question is...Is it possible to put my system in a new case, like a mid tower? ( please excuse the noobiness of yours truly ).Thanx

do you mean low profile, like the card wont fiit due to space in your case? just get a cheap 40 dollar black case and mod the crap out of it :D . Or just return the card and with the money u would have used to buy the case buy a better card and make sure the demansions will fit your case.

So, you think it's actually possible?

it should be possible.

Most companies stick to the same format. Some have changes a few things around and it has not done them well to do so.

The new Dell's are in normal format factor i beleive. I would recommend getting a cheaping case and modding it too.
Or you could get one of those adapter cards which were mentioned somewhere else on the forums that put your card parallel to the motherboard... i think, i didn't really read up on them.

are they mATX boards? or proprietary?

I work in d530 sff everyday. It's one of our main pc's. (I'm at work right now sitting on a dc5000, almost the same)

It seems to have basic atx mobo mounts.

I will check today. Does yours have a daughter board? By this I mean can it support full pci cards or half pci cards?

If you don't understand this, just tell me and I will try to explain better.

I will try to get you an answer by this weekend.

yeah you should be able to put the d530 into another case it isn't a proprietary form factor (might be a proprietary mobo and psu) but it looks like an mATX to me.

I support d510,d530,dc5000,nc6000 and nc6120
I'm sitting on an nc6000 now (peice of crap)

nil8, if you get any new dc5000 (this month anyways) in your office then keep an ear out for faulty fans, I've been flooded with dying fans in new dc5000 since early may.

We've had faulty outtake fans and maxtor 40 gb hdd's. They have defective motors in them.

Hmmm, I haven't seen too many faulty HDDs on the dc5000 a few yes, but not too bad. We do get Sporadic bursts of cd-burners that won't burn anymore tho.

We're not using cd burners. Only lite-on 40x cdroms. They seem to work fine.

These are using discontinued LG Combo DVD/CD-RW drives
they work fairly well when they do work. But we only hear about them all at once (i'm doing remote support) for example, today I called HP to replace the drives in 9 different pcs. (I hate the hp hotline)

Is it an automated one like microsoft and symantec... those things were horrible.
Especially when you were trying to manually activate a product.
I just kept mashing random keys for a few seconds, until the comp detects that u want to talk to a person... lol

Yeah, it starts off automated but its all voice entry, so no button mashing shortcut
Then it goes from bad to worse when you start talking to a "Technician" or in other words a guy off the street who knows nothing about computers and reads off a script.

The problem with those scripts is that you always have to go through it unless you can finagle the guy into passing by the stupid pos checklist somehow.
Normally I tell them I'm in an IT department and they let me bypass it.

We just lie :D

we start off: "it's dead for these several reasons" and then just say "yes we did that" and "that test failed" several times
and of course there's the "ok i'm going to sit here and scratch me head so please hold"

average call time for a simple case: 30 minutes

it would be sooooo much nicer if they setup a tech site and ditched the operators completely.

Make a specific hotline for business and IT/IS and I would be happy. Actually talking to tech who knew something. That would be nice.

I work in a hospital and we can't ship our failed drives back because of hipaa and the info that's on them. It's taken me almost 3 months to get hp to realize this, even with a rep. Yesterday I finally got a real answer out of them about how to deal with this problem. Finally. Woot.

We have a 10 lb sledge hammer used to destroy the drives, hipaa hammer baby.

LOL
I Love the 10lb solution.

Yeah my buddy used to work at a med tech company he had the same problem with IBM drives.

It would be nice not to have to explain to them that we have 50+ locations to ship to and not just the main office.
I give out addresses to them so often I start to feel like 411

and a tech that knows what i'm talking about would be nice too.

Hp hotline..... gotta find that number out. I love calling up stupid hotlines and then trying them to fix a problem tht doesn't even exist and find if they can solve it. Out of something like 150 calls to a certain computer hotline, I only had 1 success, guess what the question was..... "I think my motherboard has died, how do I check if it is?" Their response was interesting. But have you guys ever phoned a shop where the Receptionist of the store wouldn't shut up and allow you to speak?

I've done one better than that,
It's a game I like to call "Stump the tech"
Me and a buddy walk into all the computer shops downtown and start talking tech to the "tech"
it's fun to watch the different reactions these salesmen "techs" have when they realise they don't know what we're talking about

The best reaction we've ever had was the guy who realised that he was in over his head and simply shut up.
The worse was the guy who was in over his head and tried to contribute to the conversation. To my horror he ends the conversation with: "so you want me to build you a system?"
Allways fun to do but don't do it alone in a big store (ie Best Buy, FutureShop...)
I've been kicked out of Futureshop 6 different times for out selling the salesmen :D
I've even left with a customer, I escorted her down the street to the actual computer shop and helped her buy the right video card for what she wanted instead of the 500$ that she didn't need.
