So here we are, my best friend and I chatting over TeamSpeak while playing some WoW. Somehow we got on the topic of Rasterbator (http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/) and how cool it would be to have a poster of our choosing and of any size. The conversation was long and fairly uneventful, but it pretty much goes like this...

Mike = Nice Printer
Logan (Best Friend) = Ink
Me = "Poster Quality" Printing Paper

Since my wall is pretty average, I don't have a huge space to work with. I was thinking about getting the Diggnation logo, but that would be too long. Then I thought about doing the boondocks saints poster, but that isn't very original and it only looks good HUGE imo. So after thinking about it for awhile, I decided on this...

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h237/MitaPi/TBCSRAS3.jpg

If thats okay with you Crimson? I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be okay, but just on the off chance that your not okay with it I would like to get the okay first. ^_^

Oh yeah, and the reason why I want an okay is because I want to show it to you guys after its done and posted on my wall. Otherwise, I could just do it and no one would know. lol

...and just for ****s and giggles, this is the TBCS logo Rasterbatized 500 times!

That is cool!

You could make a really really big dignation logo take a picture and digg it. But TBCS is cool to.

That'd be really, reaaally cool.

I just Rasterbated my sig, lol.

Gonna print it and put it on my wall, 'cause this is a sig I like a lot.

Anywho, I don't see why crimson would mind.

Question: Do you have to have an ultra high resolution picture for this to work well, or does it work well with any image size.

Any image size. This TBCS logo isn't even all that big, I couldn't even use it as a desktop background. This is why it is so cool. You can make small images huge.

I'm going to do a "test" print with normal paper right now using my dads printer. I'll have to find a camera to use, hopefully my dad has his in his truck.

Nice! Is that normal paper nil8??

What image is that? Very cool.

Now I have a question.

What is Dot Size? It's set to 10mm... what does that mean?

Dot size is the size of the dots. If it's set to 10mm, that means the dots are 10mm big.

oh okay... lol I just won't ask.

What would be the best? It has 5-25.

Oh, I have no idea. I'd just go with the default if it was me. Should look fine.

I've done a lot of Rasterbating (man that sounds bad). There is actually another thread about it on here that I started with some posters I made. In my experience having one dot for every pixel looks pretty good, or one dot for every four pixels (2x2). This generally works out because of the way the software works.

For color, it takes the average color of the area that one dot will take up (which is why the fewer pixels per dot the better). The size of the dot is then decided by the saturation of light (how dark or bright that area of the picture is).

For a picture that has a width of 1280 pixels I do the math like this.

1280 x 5 = 6400 (Where 1280 are the pixels and 5 is the dot size, the result being in output mm)

6400 x 0.03937 = 251.968 (I convert the total width from mm to inches)

251.968 / 11 = 22.9 (This is the width in sheets of paper that my outcome would be, and the limit of how big a poster with a width of 1280 pixels should be)

That is how I find the limit of how big the output of a poster should be. Obviously, using bigger dots will give a bigger output poster, and smaller pictures will produce smaller posters. Anything within the max size will look reasonably good. I usually will play with the settings and rasterbate a picture several different times and then choose which one looks the best.

Also, try using the standalone and the online version. Depending on what you are trying to do, the online version is sometimes better. Good luck and great idea.

Hmmm... this isn't really the desired effect I was going for...

Can I get it to be one solid color?

Vectors use mathematical equations to represent the picture. Therefore, enlarging the picture will cause no quality loss, as it's simply re-calculated. It's good for simple things like our logo, crap for other things like photographs.

I think PNG's are a vector/bitmap hybrid. TIFF's might be vector, but i'm not certain.

True.
True to the vectors part.
True to the PNG hybrid... Just as you Dave, I'm not 100% sure... but yeah, I think it's a hybrid.

The smaller the dot size the more like the picture the image looks. Default looks like **** unless you're several feet away.
Go for a dot size of around 3 or 4.
It won't be one solid image. It will have dots no matter how small you make it, that's the point. That pdf looks correct, just drop your dot size.
It will look strange while you print it and putting it up, but once you step back and look, you will see the image.

It's normal paper and a color laser printer. That's around 15 sheets of paper. It's a large poster.

The image is of Death & Destiny from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series.

I have another rasterbated image in my hallway, I'll get a picture of it today.

Actually, I haven't. It's on my big list of books to read.
Both my sisters have and they tell me it's an excellent book.
I will eventually get around to it. Right now I'm on a nonfiction kick.

Just a quick update.

It turns out that the printers we have just aren't good enough for "poster quality" print outs. So what we are going to have to do is find someone with one of those laser printers or find a store of some sort that will let us use theirs for whatever fee they charge. Kind of disappointing, but what can you do.

Going off topic.

I'm moving in with my best friend! So happy times! ...sure beats living in my parents basement. lol yay, no more being a loser! :p

Almost all inkjet printers won't get the level of detail you want, with a few exceptions.
Go to Staples/local copy center, explain what you're trying to do and see if they'll work with you.

FYI: Moving in with friends can end badly. Be careful about it. Hanging out and living with someone are two very different worlds. Financial matters can end friendships, as well as personality conflicts.

Have you seen the COLOR Xerox machines? I haven't seen any actual printouts, but they're said to look pretty good. (and fast, of course...) Kinkos probably has a few of those printers so you might want to check there.

^^ What he said.

Make sure you both agree to things up front, like bills, food etc. Also get those codes down for when you have a girl over (t-shirt hanging on the door knob means do not disturb!). :bunny:  :bunny: :p

Already taken care of. ;)

I'm not as foolish and young as I once was, I'll be turning 20 here in may. Surprising isn't it? Some people just take longer to grow up I guess. lol

I'll keep your t-shirt tip in mind, thats a really good idea. I've been hearing rumors that my other room mate (my best friends friend) makes quite a bit of noise during the night, so I'm going to have to retaliate as often as I can. :p

I've had an idea about the poster though. My dad's company might have some nice printers. They are always printing stuff off because it's a real estate company, so it only makes since that they would have some nice ones right? We'll see I guess.

Another idea I had, would be to just get a enormous blank poster and draw it up. Then I could cut it how I want to give it that artsy fartsy effect. ^_^
