I was looking around the net the other day and i saw that one guy modded a car mp3 deck into a 5.25in drive bay. I'm curious about this, as i would like to do the same to my PC, then i wouldn't need the bulky, cheap sounding stereo system i have laying around. Also would it be able to run off the 12V rail of a dedicated power supply?
I've been looking around here for a while, and it finally got to me. I have the urge to mod something.
thanks

I don't see why it isn't possible. Do you want to run the output signal through your PC's Sound processor? Or simply power the MP3 player with the PSU?

I would like to use the line in AUX port on the head unit thinger from the audio out on my PC, and use a 12V power supply to power the unit, and then run speakers from the case. Kind of an all in one integration, with stand alone speakers, instead of having a million different things connected.

That would be interesting. For some reason I thought a standard 1 din head unit was a little bigger than a 5.25" bay. Nothing a dremel couldn't take care of though. Don't forget that many aftermarket car setups have a separate amplifier just for the speakers. You could probably fit one inside of the case. It all depends on the quality of audio you want. I run high-end car audio in my ride and my amps are kinda big to put inside a case.
On a side note this would be a cool mod for a car themed case.

Thats kinda what i was thinking, as I plan to do a mod after a chevy cobalt ss in the future, and the DIN unit would be a nice addition. Although I do have a stock cobalt head unit sitting around gathering dust, it is too large to incorporate into a mod.
chaksq- Yes a single DIN unit is bigger than 5.25in. And as for sound quality I will just go with whatever the deck can provide for now, maybe in the future add in an amp to power a sub or something like that.

I'm trying to find a picture, and I dont really have time to do anything, unless i take the deck out of my car which isn't happening atm, since i cant drive without music. Plus i have a math test to study for. GRR! but i will try to find a picture, or if worst come to worst, will throw something together in photoshop.
